Apple Working on Fix for OS X Mavericks Mail App Issues

Apple is working on a fix to address issues with the native Mail client in OS X Mavericks, including problems with Gmail, stability, and smart mailboxes, reports 9to5Mac.

There have been widespread reports of Mavericks users experiencing problems receiving messages, sorting messages into folders, and deleting messages. Apple is aware of the problem and has seeded an updated Mail app to both Apple employees and testers in Apple's AppleSeed customer program.

Apple is telling testers that the updated Mail app, which carries the same Version 7.0 as the current app but an updated build number of 1822 compared to 1816 for the publicly available version, fixes those issues while addressing overall stability and smart mailbox enhancements. The company is also asking users with the updated Mail app to test for the following things:
- Use Mail with your usual Mail accounts, including iCloud, Gmail, Exchange, etc.
- Send Mail messages
- Receive and check for new Mail messages at the intervals you expect it
- Read and move Mail messages to folders on your mail server, folders on your Mac, smart folders.
- Delete Mail messages as appropriate
- Undo move or delete actions with your Mail messages
- Mark messages read/unread in both your mail provider's webpage and Mail and verify they stay in sync.

Currently, the update is only available as a downloadable patch for Apple employees and testers rather than a regular update to Mavericks. While OS X 10.9.1 is well into development, it's not yet known whether the Mail update will roll out separately or be included with OS X 10.9.1.

I'm hoping all native apps will be downloadable through the Mac App Store with future OS releases.

Same goes for iOS, seems like the best way to send out updates as quickly as possible - rather than updating the entire OS itself.
 
Hopefully get the *woosh* back as the mail flies off into the cyber ether.

I don't think they'd do that. There's not much point--they are included in Mavericks, which is free. Apple can still issue updates even if the app isn't on the MAS--see iTunes.
 
Same thing happened with me and the DP

I assumed that they fixed this because it no longer did it (at least for me)

I was wondering why I keep seeing a mailbox called /Drafts [IMAP]. Guess this is why.
 
Will they fix the issue where Mail freezes whenever you attach a QuickTime, or try to reply to a message that has one attached? Confirmed on multiple computers running mavericks.
 
Mail Crashes

If in do a search on 'dad' in my inbox and then select his email address, it works. if I go into my junk folder, search on 'dad" and then select his email address, mail crashes.
 
I read for the first time today that there are issues with Gmail and mail.app. I have only experienced two since upgrading:

1) to archive an item, I have to move it to GMAIL/Archive in the sidebar rather than to MAILBOXES/Archive/Gmail (All Mail), BUT it's the latter folder that then has the item. That is, I can only move to one folder, but the folder to which I move items is then empty, and it's the other folder that shows them all.

2) Lots of messages in my inbox that I have never archived now show an "Archive - Gmail (All Mail)" tag even though they physically remain in the inbox.

Both are minor annoyances, and it seems like others have it much worse.
 
Huh, of any of the things in Mavericks I've noticed, Mail problems are not one of them. Most of what I've seen are very minor intermittent graphical glitches with certain animations (e.g., user switching), and maybe 2 unexplained sudden restarts.

Oh, and I can't boot into Safe Mode for some reason. Never quite figured that one out. :confused:
 
The biggest disappointment in Mail 7.0 for me was the change in behavior for Gmail. Unlike others, I haven't noticed any horrible problems with it downloading lots of messages, but they did change the behavior for deletion and arching. Before, when you "deleted" a message in Mail, it actually archived it in Gmail. (I think; it did for me, so if this wasn't default behavior, then it was at least possible to change this, which it doesn't seem to be now.) Now, Delete actually deletes, and there is a separate Archive action. Makes sense, except that the behavior is quite different from before and wasn't really well explained--and if you use the Del keyboard shortcut, it still deletes. I wish that could be changed, because I actually have to use the mouse and click a button now.

Oh, and they went way overboard with the Archive thing. Like, they added the concept of archiving to Exchange (and presumably all non-Gmail accounts), which doesn't really have this feature. It's not a bad implementation--just an "Archive" folder that they move these items to. Only problem? I already had a folder named Archive in my Exchange account, which Mail renames visually (but not on the server) to Archive-2, but there's no way I can make Mail work with this folder instead of the one it wants to create.

I'd switch to Thunderbird if it supported Exchange, but Mail eats up a lot of RAM already (I'm sure Outlook is even worse), and I'd rather not have two clients open.

This. And if you are too gun-shy to pull the trigger on the ridiculously-underpriced $2 app, go to their website and download the beta to try it out. It's the only native mail client that actually makes me want to use a native mail client.

If you just stopped and asked nicely for him to stop sending everybody those Cialis ads, we wouldn't be in this mess! :p

luckily I always check email manually, don't want to be bothered by email notification so ymmv. good on Apple for the quick fix.
 
It is in GOOGLEs best interest to make it more and more difficult for desktop clients to access Gmail accounts. You don't get ads with an IMAP client like Mail. Google also has a very poor/non-standard implementation of the IMAP protocol itself which makes it hard for clients to get things right. Mail worked fine for me and my Gmail account in 10.8 but I can at least understand why there would be issues with Gmail specifically.
