I’m absolutely convinced now—Siri is hands down the smartest alarm-setting app in history.
It’s not really that smart at alarm setting. Recently I tried to change the time for an existing named alarm, and instead of changing it, Siri created an additional one with the same name (as I found out when the old one went off unexpectedly).

I also haven’t found a way to have Siri list (or delete) all inactive alarms (and only those), although it’s possible to have it list all active alarms. It’s also not possible to have it turn off/on all active/inactive alarms in one go. It starts enumerating alarms and asking which one I want to turn on or off, and doesn’t understand “both” or “all of them”. It’s an exercise in frustration.

And one time it apparently got into a state where it was processing two alarm-related requests at once and asking questions for each of them. Me saying “hey Siri, stop” would alternate between it asking the question for the one request or for the other.

The use of large language models will also allow Siri to perform much more complex tasks, which Apple has to rely on OpenAI's ChatGPT for in iOS 18.2.

Apple will use a first-generation Apple LLM to evaluate requests to determine whether the existing Siri infrastructure should be used, or if a second LLM that's able to handle more complex requests should be queried.

I think whoever wrote this totally misunderstood what is happening with Siri and ChatGPT. ChatGPT won't be doing ANY tasks on the phone, never mind "complex tasks". It's there for world knowldege, and that is it. It's going to be no different to invoking ChatGPT now via it's own app (possibly worse as if you're a subscriber you have an advanced voice mode) - it won't be doing anything on the device, it'll replace "I can Google that" with sending it to ChatGPT for an answer.

The iPhones need 16-24gb of ram first, then they can worry about AI. Plus, what happens when Siri gets pissed off because she doesn’t have enough ram?

Apple should just admit they now suck at writing code and just quit doing it. Maybe ask Google or Tesla to write a new Siri in their spare time. I'm sure they'd be glad to help.

But on another note, does anyone actually use Siri, like in the commercials? I doubt it.
Hey now, just because the basis of Apple's operating system, their web browser, their music player app, their professional video editing app, their coding/IDE app, and their digital audio workstation app are all based on previously produced products from other companies or open source endeavors, and just because whenever Apple tries to rewrite these apps from scratch they either lose functionality or perform terribly, doesn't mean Apple sucks at writing code. /s

Been waiting on buying HomePods since the current ones probably won’t support a smarter Siri. Think I might as well buy and sell whenever time is due

Or buy yourself some great quality "dumb" speakers and let Siri in your phone/iPad/AppleTV be the "smarts."

Smart speakers are like iMac- when any one part goes or the Corp decides it's time- it's over. "Dumb" speakers can sound just as good decades from now… and “another record quarter” objectives can’t dictate any vintaging decisions. Plus, you'll have ever-smarter Siri (hypothetically based on this rumor) on those other Apple devices anyway.

HP is NOT the only way. There's PLENTY of speakers in the world. And the "smarts" part already lives in the other main lines you likely already own. Use them there and NOT have to regularly replace a kind of technology that can otherwise last DECADES. Bonus: about HALF of the purchase that would be profit for Apple can instead have most of that money buying the speaker (because many speaker sellers have much less than towards 50% margin).

Bonus 2: you won't be limited to only Stereo speakers. Start with some good "dumb" speakers and- optionally- over time, add to it to develop up to a true ATMOS setup.

A bit behind the ball even for Apple, but if Apple Intelligence can't make Siri smarter, what will?
Apple Intelligence doesn’t make any changes to the current Siri, besides just tapping into ChatGPT. Really, the only changes they made to Siri in iOS 18 is the new UI, being able to understand you better if you stumble your words, and ability to listen to follow up questions. But the actual AI part of Siri is largely unchanged.

A new Siri... the old one isn't even funny to make fun of anymore. Today, I was talking to someone and Siri thought it had been called (it was not), and somehow thought it was asked to turn on the TV, which it did. How nice. The best part, though, is I then called Siri and asked it to turn off the TV, to which it replied "you will need to unlock your phone to do that". (phone was locked throughout this adventure, as I was talking to someone in person).

So a new Siri... looking forward to a new range of misadventures. Hopefully some of them make me laugh.

That's great news. Will is finally be able to give us answers instead of pointing us to Google results for almost everything?

Even hardcore fans have to admit that the 14-year pioneering role with Siri was a bit of a waste

How was it a waste? Siri set the benchmark for personal assistants. It's been immensely useful in a variety of ways of millions of people. But it needs to evolve, as the industry has leapt ahead. No doubt.

macOS 6, 7, 8 and 9 were immensely helpful at their time, but they, too, needed to be replaced. This is no different.

ChatGTP was in development for 10 years before it was released to the public in its current form.
