Never. Gonna. Happen.

I could just see it now: "hey tech friend, should I buy iPad mini or 'real' iPad? Which is better?"

Confusion ensues. Customer buys neither. What would a smaller device offer?

If portability and price decreases are the sole reasons apple would jump on this then they'd be grossly misinformed. A smaller iPad is not what anyone wants. A phone fits the small end of the spectrum while the iPad itself makes up the market for anything "bigger."

I just don't see a use. Of course my opinion is subjective and not of the mainstream, but I would think the mainstream even would wonder what the deal is with a smaller device.

THERE IS AN APPLE MARKET for a Kindle Fire sized product. As much as I try to resist, the way the Fire fits in your hands feels RIGHT. Beyond that the product is crap and Apple could do it right and blow it away, open thine minds!

It's two 3.5" screens
It's a 5" screen
It's a 7" screen
It's a big iPhone
It's a small iPad
It's an iPod Touch with a data plan
It's a TV Remote
It's a PDA
It's a car stereo component

It's a rumor.

Water is wet.

This is a rumor site, that's what we do here. Why state the obvious?

Why do people keep calling it the iPhone 5 when it's going to be the 6th generation iPhone. It will either be the iPhone 6, iPhone LTE, iPhone 4G, or something like that. iPhone 5 would mean it's the 5th iPhone they ever made, which isn't true.

So, the iPhone was the th iPhone they ever made,
the iPhone 3G was the 3Gth iPhone they ever made,
the iPhone 3Gs was the 3Gsth iPhone they ever made,
the iPhone 4 was the 4th iPhone they ever made,
and the iPhone 4s was the 4sth iPhone they ever made.

Right? Because that's what you're saying it *has* to mean if they call it the iPhone 5.

It's a model designation, not a counter. It's *never* been a counter, and it's only ever *looked* like a counter *once*. Get over it.

Wow, you really went out of your way to try and make him look stupid, when it was obvious he meant that the two iOS devices which were designated by JUST a number like "iPhone 5" in the past, were actually that generation of device as well.

iPhone 4 WAS the fourth gen iPhone

iPad 2 WAS the second gen iPad

I guess you think those devices being named 2 & 4 had nothing to do with the generation they were, "because that is what you are saying"

His theory was sound. Apple can/may call it whatever they like, or drop the designation all together but what you said, was not at all what he was saying.

Odds are good they'll drop the numbers on the iPhone at the next launch like they did with the iPad. From their perspective it makes lots of sense. But a 5" device is useless on so many levels. I hope this is false. I'd take a 4" screened phone but that's about it.

I don't believe any Apple rumors until Apple makes the official announcement. Why get your hopes up.

Ok I can see a Apple TV dedicated touch remote out of this

That's an interesting point. I think that most of us here, including myself, have just been assuming that if/when the apple tv set comes out we will use existing iOS devices to control it. But Apple would have to include a dedicated remote, right? There has got to be enough people out there who would buy this rumored TV who don't already own an iOS device.

The only thing that snags it is I don't see why you would need a retina display remote control. I want to be able to use the remote without even looking at it.

I can't wait for the 1 inch iPad I can put on my car keys.

Um.... So essentially this? ...

Some of us own stock.
So some rumors such as those about the fact that Apple included strings in their own code referencing an 4G iPhone give a good hint about features of the next gen of iPhone.
Having this PRETTY SOLID knowledge allows us to make stock purchases BEFORE the official announcement while the price is still low.

Apple has been rumored to be developing a so-called "iPad mini" carrying a 7.85-inch display carrying the same 1024x768 non-Retina resolution of the original iPad and iPad 2.

for how many years now. Right up there with the whole "Pro" iPad in the fall rumor and the 'real tv set' rumor.

and how many times has it not happened.

I guess they figure if they repeat these every year eventually they will be right

hmmm.... Apple TV Remote and/or GameConsole GamePad with Touchscreen... such the new Nintendo Wii U?

yep it's the amazing new iPod Touch. Now in 5 inches (making it more than just an iPhone that doesn't make phone calls.

ha

The next iPhone will be called "iPhone", like they did with "iPad". :)

LMAO too true.

I agree it's a model designation. To keep it from being a 'counter,' is most likely the reason they won't call it the iPhone 5.

YOU KILL YOURSELF WITH LOGIC!!!!!

Apple should leave the 5" smartphone and 7" tablet market for android and continue to sandwich them with superior 3.5" and 9.7" devices.

A 5" touchscreen (plus bezel) device would be too big to fit in a pocket, so it wouldn't be a phone-like device. For a home device, it would be a poor substitute for an iPad.

IF the device is real, my guess is that isn't not just a general-purpose "iPad mini", but a more targeted device. The TV remote, a gaming-branded iOS device would seem more likely.

The resolution is ridiculously high for either application. Plus you would have to look down at it constantly, which is not ideal for a remote and especially not for a controller.

Well, I think Apple has now set Retina pixel density as 'the bar' for iOS devices; I doubt they'll release any new non-Retina iOS device.

The next iPhone will be called "iPhone", like they did with "iPad". :)

I was so glad to think the knock-on efect of the 'new' iPad would be to put this silly subjective argument to bed.

Although I still think the next iPhone will be called the iPhone 5 4G Ultra Extreme Max.

I would love a 5" iPhone....

I don't know . . . . I think 4" --> 4.3" is a good area to hover around in. Anything less than 4" is a joke nowadays and anything bigger than 4.5" is a niche product.

Now, I would love the Galaxy Note as a phone since I do more than enough work on my cell and iPad, but I don't see Apple ever making a niche 5" product and admitting that Samsung had a good thing going.

My guess....iPhone HD XL 9000 which will be sold alongside the 3.5 inch next-gen iPhone for $999 for 16gb, $1999 for 32gb and $2999 for 64gb. Extra $399 for white and another $799 for the damn thing to come with the non-user replaceable battery installed.

And no, I'm not a fandroid. I own multiple apple devices (iOS & OSX)....I'm just dissatisfied with the minor, incremental updates touted as giant leaps of engineering in iOS devices as of late as well as the obvious/ridiculous price gouging for things like storage and memory in OSX devices.

*Edit*
I sincerely hope the next iPhone does have a larger screen though...even since the iPad It seems the iPhone has become too small for practical use with this guerrilla paws I call hands...lol. It was never big enough to do anything but (very) light web surfing, email, and the occasional reference app anyway IMO. Gaming was out of the question; my thumbs take up 1/3-1/2 of the screen.

it seems like an apple tv that runs apps would need a remote that also serves as a game controller...

That would be an iPad, iPhone or iPod running remote

Get used to it. That is exactly how Apple does it. Introduce a new product and continue to add features and tweaks. OSX is a great example of this. Puma wasn't much different than Cheetah, Jaguar wasn't much different than Puma...and so on. If you compare Lion to Cheetah there are MAJOR differences. The hardware, and other OSes will follow the same philosophy.
