- 5+ years worth of software updates
- The longer users keep the device, the less chances of them switching to Android/PC during upgrade cycles
- Apple's fastest growing segment is services
- Services + preventing people from switching platforms + long software support = keep users in the garden = more profitable

it's extraordinary that people think Apple should give Microsoft/Android every opportunity to come in and steal customers away just because they wanted the upgrade cycle to be slightly sooner than it should. LOL

Long ridiculed by people that don’t own one. Sure it looks silly, but it’s a non-issue with how infrequently charging is required and quickly it charges. It was never a problem. I got a warning a few days before it was out of power and even if I ran it down completely, I could take a 2 minute coffee/bathroom/walk/etc break to have enough power for the rest of the day.

Heck wouldn’t be surprised if the design was deliberate because it’s a actually a bad idea for people to use a rechargeable mouse with such a small battery constantly plugged in and moving it with a lightning cable hanging off it would be clunky and destroy the cable form the constant flexing. So it didn’t matter where the plug was, it wasn’t an use case to use it while charging. It’s not like it’s the only mouse bt with a recharging port on the bottom; it’s not a wired mouse and not trying to be.

As much as I love the Magic Mouse for most apps/work, for me it has one giant flaw... (and it's not the charge port location)

It's a terrible gaming mouse because of the simple fact that it can't register a right-click and left-click simultaneously. So many games require this (for example, in most FPS-type games you aim with the right button and shoot with the left) that it's kind of bonkers that the Magic Mouse can't do it.

If Apple were to fix this one thing, I'd be very very happy and run out and buy the new version straight away!

The charging port on the bottom of the mouse is the least of its design issues (is an issue). The "magic" mouse is unergonomic and stupid. None of those products are magic. I want a wired Apple keyboard, one with some added ports on the back edge. Charging a desktop keyboard is the silliest thing in the world.

Au contraire mon frère. I mean, props for trying some French I guess, but…

And I’m in the “yes the usb port positioning was fairly stupid but omg please don’t mess with this mouse apart from possibly moving the port because it‘s ergonomically the best design in the world” camp.
It’s…a…joke!

Like everyone has already pointed out, these are most likely just going to be USB-C refreshes, but I'm holding out hope that Apple has somehow fixed the newest version of the Magic Trackpad. I can't tell exactly what the issue is with them, but the very first time I used one I noticed it felt ever so slightly laggy in comparison to my old Magic Trackpad. (the rechargeable version, not the silver battery tube ones) Tried it on a number of different machines, including an Intel one, and it performed the same on all of them so it did not seem to be computer specific. I exchanged it for another one at the store, still laggy in comparison to my old one. If you google around you can find a lot of people have had issues like this with these newer magic trackpads.

I thought I did already?

I established that ubiquitous nature of Apple's official lightning cable benefits the user since they're everywhere, so it's just as or even more available than AA batteries.

However, the cable does not use what everyone else uses: PVC. Apple's use of non-PVC materials = less durable, but better for health/environment.

For devices that won't move while charging (iPhone/Keyboard/Trackpad), it's fine to have a port that sticks out because it generally won't move.

For device that could possibly move while charging, Apple doesn't want the user to move the device while it's charging or else it'll damage the cable. So they put the port where the user is forced to not use the device while it's charging. They added quick charge so it's still better than swapping out AA batteries.
I think its more about the receptacle failing then the cable.

I also use the Magic Mouse. I don't care about the connection usb/lightning. But what bothers me most is that if you click on it somewhere and hold your mouse with your thumb and middle finger, the mouse pointer is jumping! Do I just have the feeling or other people with it???

I bet $100 that this will happen:

  • New Magic Mouse: everything the same, still charge from the bottom, USB-C instead of lightning
  • New Magic Keyboard: everything the same, USB-C instead of lightning
  • New Magic Trackpad: everything the same, USB-C instead of lightning
What do I care about my assumptions? I think it’s fine. I charge my Magic Mouse like once every two months, I couldn’t care less since charging takes like an hour.
You forgot price increases all round, well, just because, new colours to choose from.

There won’t be a redesign because apples design team is gone lol. Without Jony Ive and Steve Jobs , apple doesn’t know how to design revolutionary products. Only new Apple Watch bands with pride stripes and a metal Apple Card.

good to know. my silver battery tube broke down and was about to buy the newest one. but I'll just go for a used rechargeable trackpad instead.

From the god awful puck mouse to the charge port no-no on the last one, question comes how do they screw it up again...

I'm presuming they do USB-C, and somehow change the surface of the mouse so its some sort of 3D touchpad, so the mouse never physically moves, much like a trackball mouse but same small size so the mouse never stays put.

Prove us wrong Apple, and hit one out of the circular park?
They're going with a wireless circular puck design this time around. but it's thinner this time! It's the thinnest mouse they've ever released

The Apple mouse I have is useless for me. I can never click it where I'm supposed to... its a older one.

Oh, I do hope that, as a giant F.U. to all the folks who got their shorts in a knot over the underside charging port, that the new mouse will charge wirelessly and like the AirPods case can be placed on either a watch or iPhone MagSafe charging puck.

Because, you know, it’s a wireless mouse that charges really quickly and works for a long time on a single charge and absolutely does not need to be left plugged in and converted to a wired mouse.

The magic is gone. So I guess it would make sense for the new mouse to just be called Mouse. Not “Magic Mouse”.

The charge port on the bottom of the mouse doesn't bother me at all (it's not like I charge it more than once every 6 months for a few minutes), but I would LOVE for Apple to put some work into the ergonomics of the mouse. But Apple doesn't exactly have a good reputation with mouse design. Does anybody remember the old hockey puck mouse?

Still, it feels like the design of the Magic Mouse was over engineered for form over function by Jony Ive. Apple has made far more practical design decisions since he left the company, so I'm hopeful. I'm about to have surgery on my shoulder that I partially blame on my poor desk ergonomics, including using a Magic Mouse 8 hours a day for like a decade. Already had carpal tunnel surgery 2 years ago. And yes, I've tried other mice but I haven't found one with scrolling action that I like.
