I would like to see:
A simple check off of books I have read.
An automatic pop up of every book in a series, in order and with the ones you have read shown checked off.

That would be really nice
I typically enjoy reading books in a series and in order... and I have to go to a website to find out the order and where I am at

While this is certainly good news, I remain cautious it will make much of a difference.

For many of us, we would much rather stay in the beautiful Apple eco-system whenever possible. But for Books, the Apple store is a bit of wasteland, where they don't have all of the books Amazon has and far more important is they don't have the reviews and discussions Amazon does. If I lookup a book on Amazon I can see hundreds or thousands of reviews and quickly know the positives and minuses about the book. With Apple the same book may only have 5 reviews or none, so not a great enough sample to know much of anything about the book. When Apple missed out on buying GoodReads it further sealed their fate.

Apple can continue to improve the UI, keep costs competitive, add new fun features, but people use Amazon for the reviews/community, and Apple can't build that without first having more reviews and a community. Buying something like a Good Reads gives a company a major head start, but currently there are no other GoodReads big enough and Amazon certainly won't sell it.

Books will remain popular for the millions who always use the defaults app, but will lag behind Amazon, unless they truly push getting reviews or other must have features, color e-ink screens, or Amazon maybe sells the business to focus elsewhere.

I don't use Amazon because they don't use .epub. 100% dealbreaker for me.

Hopefully they do not use the iTunes store model. That thing is awful. I haven't purchased a single app since it's update. Cannot find anything and hate being told what I should purchase through 'in your face' recommendations.

This is a long shot, but I'd love for someone to revolutionize the ebook game and merge all of your accounts together, just like how Movies Anywhere merged all of my Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu, Google Play, and UltraViolet movies. I have so many books stuck in both iBooks and Kindle and it's a hassle to remember what I have and don't have and then hunting it down. First world problem, i know, but it would be a great change.

Please give us audiobooks in the cloud - and that includes our own "rips" in whatever format we use, aac, mp3, m4a, anything that is marked as an audiobook in iTunes.

Apple should loosen up like they did by joining movies anywhere. It's long past due for them to create a books app for Android and other platforms. I have maybe 2-3 books from Apple's bookstore. I understand why some might want to stay all in on their iOS platform. But I don't think media should be confined to one platform.

Just order the Amazon Kindle Oasis, can't wait for it.

I got mine at release and like it a lot. I personally suggest changing the page turn buttons to be "inverted" in Settings. I think it is a lot easier to advance the page with your thumb when holding it one handed if the lower button is "forward."

One feature that I hope they add is the ability to distribute books (and movies for that matter) via MDM to devices rather than AppleID like they do apps. This would really help school districts save money. Instead of having to pay for new physical books every year, they can just assign it to a kid's iPad, and then revoke it at the end of the year.

I also hope they keep the feature where it groups books you own by their series.

This is why I've started migrating out of the Apple ecosystem. There should be entire teams devoted to each "Apple App" that improve it with each iteration. Amazon's Kindle App is far superior to Apple's book AND it's OS agnostic.

If Apple wants to get into the media business (e.g. tv), they're going to have to learn to play with other platforms AND make the UI/UX light years better on their software. Right now, Amazon owns this space.

This is my sentiment as well. I buy books off Amazon, convert them in Calibre, and read them in iBooks. The highlighting and cross-device syncing are better with iBooks.

I've done that, but with very limited success. Maybe I'm just a potato, but I couldn't get a nice formatting to come across. I just stuck with Kobo (and all my purchases are there, and I have an older eReader as well).

So will 'iTunes' be rebranded 'Tunes' and 'iMovie' to 'Movie'... No Idea!
(You see what I did there?)

Apple will redesign Books with a "simpler" interface aimed at...

God, how I fear the words "simpler", "simplify" and all the derivatives: we got weird Yosemite following Metro UI by MS and Google with its local colors coupled with reduced functionality. No more distinct controls, only "hints". This word seems to prevail these days - at least in media coverage - all this as flat as Cook's sense of humor, hiding continued trend of dumbing down software for the sake of satisfying the mob behind nice wording . They made a cult of this false "simplicity" and any complexity is deemed vicious and "unfriendly" beforehand.

So that's exactly what it is: when you read a headline bearing the word "simplicity" you know that they're going to rip more functions.

I have a love-hate opinion of digital books. I mostly purchase reference books in the format for portability. Aside from that benefit, the digital format isn’t superior to a printed book. I can flip through a physical book and find information faster than I can clicking on search links. Browsing is also much more efficient and satisfying with physical books. The crude typography and disjointed flow/layout of digital content is irritating; callouts and illustrations are typically orphaned from their texts.

It’s no wonder that printed books avoided obsolescence after all, and that bookstores are making a comeback.
