This sounds like it could be positive. I had to get a new mac this year and couldn't justify the Mac Pro for various reasons (mostly the starting price that would still require immediate upgrades), but I'd love to have a reasonable headless option back next time.

dont feel bad, that mac will work perfectly for them for another 3 years
And remember, while this is still under R&D and it will be next year also, those people who already bought that mac year ago, are making money with no issues
Yeah, I don't understand those that think the current Mac Pro will be 'obsolete' or not usable. If you're buying this class of computer, it's because of the high likelihood it is to generate income. As someone who has invested in this system, I don't regret it at all and it has already paid itself off in the first few jobs I've used it on. And it should perform for many, many years to come, so it's worked out to be a good investment.

Also more important for this class of computer is how fast professional software will be optimized for whatever new hardware Apple has coming out. Companies are still trying to optimize for the current Mac Pro!

Ah, they can finally bring back the trash can mac pro since they will control both CPU and GPU...

Make sense...here we go trashcan 2.0.

To add insult to injury, Apple should design their own proprietary DIMMs so everything is under Apple belt, no more third party components allowed !!

I am no longer in Apple workstation target market since most of my CAD job moved to Solidworks (which clearly no MacOS), so I can watched Apple toying out with their workstation...

Do you think it will have modular CPU? I can't imagine a Mac Pro without this feature... oh wait!

p.s. i really hope it will!

Theo why release the current one? People have spent thousands of dollars just to have na outdated machine in one year time.
What outdated? Aren't there a zillion of posts here from people who claim they absolutely need to run their x86 Docker containers, audio plugins, and x86 Windows games on a super-multi-core Mac? If it's the last x86 Mac Pro, it will never be superseded (by Apple) for native x86 use. Thus never outdated (until vintage).

I don't see any point in making major alterations to the design. All you really need is the new chipset though I guess they could work on a slight alteration to the design to take the cover off without unplugging everything, one of the things customers complained about. If they are going to change the design it should really be to address things that real-world use has brought up rather than trying to make it smaller.

Maybe they will sell the expansion slots in a separate chassis to those who want them, like the iPhone power adapter. ;)

True but you could get the base model and add RAM, drives, GPU, etc from an older Mac Pro that was upgraded or third party and get a solid machine for a fraction. i’m not talking a fully loaded machine as most of us don’t need a loaded Mac Pro. The base model 2019 Mac Pro is three times the price of the older base models mostly for AfterBurner support and a logic board that is custom to support high end film production, etc. A simple tower as before without be perfect. Think mid-tower system with a standard logic board and internal drive support and upgradable third party RAM, GPU.

You are absolutely correct, most people don't need this level machine, but I would call that a true "pro" machine. the issue that constantly comes up is what is a "pro"? Is it the guy cutting video or graphics in a one man facility or is it ILM of Disney...or somebody in-between. I work in a corporate video facility and we need that upper end machine...not top top level workstation but up there. We are getting 3 new MacPro's most likely in the $21-25K build....28 core CPU, 192GB RAM dual GPU with the Afterburner card a 1TB storage. I try to keep the internal drive on the small side...that keeps the freelance editors for dumping **** on the boot drive when they are supposed to put it on the storage array. We also have 4 HP Z8's which were even more than the Macs....But they's HP for you. The HP's can get real crazy and I have not idea what you would use a maxed out Z8 for.....3TB RAM, dual 28 core Xeon CPUs, 4 Quadro M6000 (24BG RAM each) 48TB internal storage and 8 PCIe slots...all for the low price of $125,000.

There should be a middle ground, less powerful than the New MacPro but with the same flexibility...and lower cost. As low as you can get with an Apple product, keeping in mind there has NEVER been anything Apple that we not expensive. I am kind in that same boat, I'm looking forward to when I move on past my 5,1 3.46 12 core GTX780 1TB HD and 96GB RAM. I aim not into the whole, I will call it hacking thing to make the old computer run the latest OS. I can't afford the new one and don't really need it. I keep looking at a used Trash Can because that will run new OS's for the next 5ish years as Apple has supported them for 5-6 years after last sale and the Trash Can was sold till 2019.

Smaller sure, as long as it doesnt drop any repairability or internal upgradability/expandability.

This is modern Apple though, they're probably trying their best to make sure you need to throw it out and buy a new one every 3 years.

Third redesign in a row with no updates in between? Great job, Apple.

I really don't know where their heads are at with the Macs these days. Why can't they make a modular desktop with internal expansion capabilities (drive bays, PCI slots, and memory) and a CHOICE OF GRAPHICS CARD VENDOR that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Seriously, $6k for a nearly empty chassis??

The Mac Pro used to be a be-all-do-all machine. An enthusiast could get one for an attainable amount ($2500 to $3k for a mid-range, anyone?) and know they could upgrade a component in a couple years to keep it relevant, while a pro (or a rich person) could configure one out the wazoo and have the fastest computer in their county for the next six months. Further, they could be configured for any use case -- gaming, music production, video production, 3D rendering, high performance CPU, or any combo of those. Now, unless you are a video pro, forget it, there are much more cost-effective options on the PC side.

And the iMac (pro or regular)? Not an option. 1/3 of the cost of those machines is the expensive screen that is going to get thrown away in three years because the other components are obsolete.

So frustrating. This is why I haven't updated since my cMP 4,1 (flashed and CPU upgraded).
Nobody said it’s a replacement for the mac pro. They could sell both at the same time.

Just give me a compact macpro that I can pick up with one handle - remember the 1st ever mac, then the imac, then the trashcan. All easily moveable. Built in handle. Trashcan 2.0 would do me just fine. Elegant, compact. Just need more power & the ability to use standard SSD. Plenty of USB A & C/dsiplay

In fact, the more I think about it the more I realise that for the first time in many years I'm actually excited about a new apple product.
