2016 could very well turn out to be a similar year to 2012. Remember when the iPad 3 was released and Tim Cook said that 2012 would be a year in which most of the product lines would get upgrades? He even referenced that in the last keynote of that year.

It wouldn't surprise me if Apple released an iPad Air 3 and an iPad Air 4 next year. Imagine if they included a "Retina HD" in the iPad Air 3, only for the GPU to be underpowered for it and release the iPad Air 4 in the Fall :D

My thinking exactly, if they go 4K I may hold out until the iPad Air 4. I know Samsung has been testing their future processors on a 4K display so maybe it won't be that underpowered.

I hardly ever use it on my 6S. I keep forgetting about it and press an icon to remove the programme only for the menu to pop up, forgetting i have to lightly hold pressing the screen to get what I want.
Doubt I would miss it really. Really not sure if I would use it on a tablet, especially a 13" one!

I really don't like 3D touch. Maybe I am doing it wrong, but I always have issues with selecting text and trying to copy and paste. I don't ever use my phone to type stuff anymore except messages for this reason.

Why do you need to turn 3D Touch off? Do you naturally put that much force on the device screen?

I don't want to have the ability to accidentally trigger something that I don't plan on ever using, and don't like complicating my processes. I like the idea of peek and pop, and while I was genuinely excited about it beforehand, I don't like the end result of said feature. I'd rather have it turned off.

I wouldn't say I naturally put that much force on the screen often, but it certainly happens (at certain angles, or in situations when I press on my phone without having my full attention on it, etc.), and it is unwelcome during these times.

Ditto, iOS has a horrible selection mechanism, it's usually messy and unpredictable. I'm wondering why it's taking so long for Apple to revamp it. I was hoping 3D touch would do something great with it but it's not happening yet.

4K display obviously

I was looking at a new iPad Air 2 yesterday, vaguely considering buying one but was really struck by what a low PPI the display was to my eye. I would never buy a device with such a jaggy display now. I consider the display on my 6s+ now barely acceptable.

You're doing it wrong. I might not use it all the time, but when I do it just works the way I expect it to.

How about not looking at the numbers, but instead the display quality itself? I personally think the iPhones and iPads of today manage to show beautiful colors for 'such a low resolution'. Yes, the competition may be at Quad HD and Ultra HD displays in the phones already, but how on earth is that better than the display of the current iPhones and iPads in terms of quality? I mean, most people have yet to get a 4K television, which by the way only shows its true quality on a certain distance. :p

I think people are overreacting on 4K displays. I'd be totally fine if the next 4.7 inch iPhone has a 1080p display tough. But then again, you should consider the fact that iPhone 6 and 6s Plus are already having trouble with graphics performance with them Full HD display. So Apple really has to up their game with the GPU in the next iPhone. And they have to optimize iOS better for higher resolution displays.

I have not found 3D touch to be particularly useful on the iPhone but invaluable on the Apple Watch.

I can see the future though and wave bye bye to the home button and fingerprint reader on Apple devices... The screen will do it all for you.

So as I suspected, this is a technical issue not Apple intentionally holding something back for whatever cynical reason people here came up with.

It's either technical , supply or holding back features.

This is just a rumour, so your suspecion is not verified :) you can "Work" on something for years and at the same time hold back features .

I wasn't even aware that iPad Pro does not offer this feature. I thought of it as a superset among the iOS devices. Guess it's not.

I wonder if this relates to the slight display warping when the iPad Air 2 is held in the middle? If you are causing an outwards pressure just by holding the device, that’s going to leave for false positives…
That warping also happens on the iPad Pro - i witnessed it on a youtube Video review.

the whole "holding back conspiracy" exists only in forums like this ...
same as the "planned obsolescence conspiracy": it doesn't exist in Apple or in any other company.
There is no company that purposely want to upset customers. Marketing 1o1.
Apple (and any other tech company) releases technology when they think it's ready to be used by the public.

Not really bothered about 3D Touch on an iPad if I'm honest.

I find 3D Touch on my 6s Plus to be extremely useful, but on a larger screened device and especially an iPad Pro, I would find it awkward to activate I would guess.

The PPI of the 6s PLUS (Full HD on 5,5 inch, 401 PPI) barely acceptable??? Wow, now it's really getting really pretentious ... Or the psychological effect of an even higher number on paper does manipulate your mind way too much. We can argue anytime about display quality differences - LED, OLED, whatever – but when it comes to PPI, your eyes simply aren't able to see the differences anymore at this level. Objectively speaking, it simply isn't possible.

It's obvious that Apple holds back tech intentionally so that competitors like Samsung can be the first to market with similar tech. Anyone can see that.

Jaggy display on an iPad Air 2 ? That's beyond ridiculous....

USB 3 ports came very late to the party on iMacs, and that was not a technology in need of development. It took late 2012 iMacs, more than a year after the rest of the world. And obviously in a thinner an non upgradable form. So make your day, call me hater

Nobody is forced to use 3D Touch.

You are if you can't turn it off. It then becomes an anti-productivity feature. I disable Siri, for example, because I occasionally activate it by mistake when I press the Home button. If I couldn't disable it, I would use my iPad less.
