Lol Apple can create a 60" iPad and it would still be as useless with this crappy OS. I used to refresh this website for potential news on any actual useful features for my iPad pro until i gave up and got a MacBook. I cringe at people with an iPad now

And yet the iPad is increasingly being used with a keyboard/pointer and Macs are reportedly gaining touchscreens.

It's obvious what needs to (and likely will) happen
I don't think it is obvious. Companies have been trying to successfully solve the problem of touch and input methods for laptop/large tablet form factors for some time and I don't see anything that *really* works well. Most people seem to assume that this can be solved simply by putting macOS onto the iPad. I don't. And I don't think messing about with macOS to make it do stuff different on the iPad is correct either.

Don't merge iPadOS and macOS. Make iPadOS into what it needs to be for a tablet.

"The leaker claims that the 14.1-inch iPad model will be able to run up to two 6K displays at 60Hz via Thunderbolt 4."

First indication that maybe the base M3 will finally be able to drive two external displays!? (Plus the internal one.)
Nope; the article mentions this device will run the M3 Pro chip.

This is why iPasOS and macOS need to merge. The amount of wasted development time that must go into having to develop and maintain different OS's which are increasingly doing the same thing is absurd.
To me the iPad interface is just that: an interface. MacOS is underneath. Just let us access it when we have a keyboard or mouse attached.

I don’t really need a Mac and an iPad if they can both be one device. Give me the macOS interface when attached to multiple displays and a mouse. Give me the iPadOS interface when it’s in my lap.

I might pay $2k for that. Especially if it was 14-15”.

MAC OS Would make more sense.
Apple will put out a 60" iPad Pro with 999 trillion GPU cores before it even as much as considers MacOS on iPads:

Consumers are still gladly buying iPads despite the lack of Apple's suite of Pro apps, and have fully accepted the arbitrary dogma that touch screens on Macs would be awful and MacOS on iPads would be terrible.

Additionally, the average consumer would be far less likely to get a $3000+ 14" iPad/Mac hybrid device over first buying a Mac for $2000-$3000 and then a $1099 iPad Pro in two separate purchases, or the other way around.

14.1" displays is just more of the same "rocket engines on a mini-cooper" changes that we've already gotten plenty of in the past.

Nothing nothing substantial will change for iPads. The competition is still years behind, and iPad sales still going strong.

This - iPadOS should be an interface that runs on certain occasions (e.g. in tablet mode, or when there is no mouse/trackpad and keyboard, while MacOS is available when "docked" (e.g. connected to external display, mouse/trackpad and keyboard attached).

Wrong.

You and I want iPadOS and MacOS to merge.

But the average consumer is gladly buying two separate products, year after year, so Apple won't change anything.

The day iPad sales plummet is the day Apple needs iPadOS and MacOS to merge.

But as long as the average person thinks there's great value in having the power of a high-end laptop inside a tablet that can only run walled iOS-style apps that day will never come.

To be honest, the iPad works for me only for basic media consumption.
Everytime I try to create / develop my hobbys I find myself switching to my Mac instead.
For example, I wanted to backup my iCloud Foto library (400GB) on an external USB Harddrive. That may be possible with iPad as well. However I did it with my mac, as it is just copy and paste.
Further I think most serious stuff still requires a real computer (PC/Mac). Thats leads to the conclusion that iPad still limits my creativity and ability to get things done. For me iPad seems to be a barrier, not a tool.

Apple has little incentive to reduce the number of devices you buy. And if iPads can run macOS, iPhones should arguably too, with external monitor support.

At this point one has to wonder if Apple is simply incapable of making macOS fully touch capable without breaking it.

Yep. Literally no uses exist for this useless device. Where were you in 2010 to save the world?

this should just be a standalone display tablet like a Wacom Cintiq. 12.9" iPad Pro is already a hassle to use as a standalone tablet so I dont see this appealing to anyone other than artists who would just have this thing on their desk the entire time (me).
