If you ask me, the MS way is better than Apple when devices have keyboard + trackpad. iPad with Magic Keyboard are very limited in multitasking and dual monitor support is very limited. Also, Windows has the benefit of a large list of applications designed for keyboard + mouse. IMO, the Apple way is not a great UX as you said. I think iPads are better tablets compared to a Surface Pro device. But as soon as you attach a keyboard + mouse, Surface Pro is a better device.

"But as soon as you attach a keyboard + mouse, Surface Pro is a better device."

You might as well replace "device" in that sentence with the word "laptop"

I can't imagine the 14" iPad being a noticeable difference from the 12.9" iPad, measured diagonally it'll be relatively unnoticeable. Just make it a 16" iPad that's a good size for the screen, battery and some new wifi antenna's.

Yeah, just seems like such a minor bump unless it just replaces the 12.9“ iPad Pro and widens the distinction between the 11” and larger.

This doesn’t make sense. What can’t you do in 12.9 that you would need 14.1 for? Whatever “special features” available in 14.1 should be also available in 12.9 and 11.

What can't you do in 11" that you would need 12.9" for, etc. ...

iPad Fold anyone?

We have the Apple Goggles coming out, Snow Crash...

Rather than folding tablets, we could get roll-up tablets, The Diamond Age...

By “a special version of iPadOS 17”, I think the rumor is referring to the ability to connect to two monitors, though viewing that as a “special version of iPadOS” would prove a little bit of ignorance. Many iPads have additional features without having a separate “special” version of iPadOS. Perhaps I’m incorrect and they are really talking about a separate specialized version. Though I seriously doubt that they would do that since the 12.9” isn’t much smaller.

Being able to do it = the Microsoft way

Being able to do it with a great UX = the Apple way

It is a monumental challenge to design a coherent architecture and user experience for the two modes that a user might potentially switch at any time, especially if we're thinking of having iPadOS switch to MacOS when a keyboard & mouse are attached.

Perhaps we'll get there at some point, but anyone who thinks you just slap it on and call it a day lives in fairy land.
Agreed, I keep trying to explain this to people when they’re like “just add iPadOS on top of macOS as ‘tablet mode’”. Generally this line of thinking is in regards to touchscreen Macs. But you hit the nail on the head. I keep trying to explain how hard that would be to do, and how it wouldn’t be just a quick copy, paste job. Not to mention it would be a janky experience swapping between two different UIs on a computer. That would make it much harder to gain muscle memory with the system. IMO, the only reason Microsoft did “tablet mode” on Windows is because they’re desperate to compete in the mobile/tablet space, yet they couldn’t make a good, compelling mobile OS, so they just shoehorned an old desktop OS. Some people are happy with the way Microsoft did it, but honestly IMO, from my interactions with it, it feels very janky. Even with “tablet mode” it just isn’t a good tablet. I think working in the direction that Apple is makes a lot of sense, because a mobile OS is intrinsically simpler and more intuitive, yet it’s functionality could be expanded with modular software settings additions akin to Stage Manager. I think iPadOS is developing to a point where the iPad will be able to do both tablet and laptop style interactions very competently. I’d go so far as to say that’s pretty much already the case. My iPad has replaced my Mac as my primary computer, and I rarely ever pull out my Mac anymore. The iPad is able to do everything I need it to, and I do a lot of “pro” computer work. iPadOS 16 was a huge leap forward in functionality, and I think it will just continue to improve.

True, when it runs the same software the feature set should be the same no matter the the size.

Special OS for the biggest iPad when it could just use Mac OS and no scaling fix for the Mini, sigh.
