I am one part skeptical and worried and one part shiveringly ecstatic. I adore this book and franchise, and Asimov will always be one of my absolute favorite authors. But hard sci-fi of this nature is inherently difficult to turn into mass-consumable entertainment, considering the thing most audiences connect with in fiction is characters, while hard sci-fi puts characterization in a back seat to the universe in which the story is set.

We'll see.

Agreed. I'd feel a lot more hopeful about this series if Asimov was still around to be involved with it. The other credits for these producers do not inspire confidence.

I couldn't agree more. This is totally my favorite book/series from Asimov, and I really hope they do it justice. Apple, don't mess it up PLEASE!

That's pretty much up to the producers.

Horrible news. I have been waiting for someone to adapt this book series to TV, but having it appear on Apple TV with its Disneyfication of entertainment content, it will prove disappointing.

I agree that sex and violence and swearing need not always proliferate on these kinds of entertainment services, but Apple drawing the line and declaring they will provide ONLY "wholesome" programming will leave this entire franchise crippled for creative direction. There is a healthy balance between forcing cloyingly sweet "family" focused entertainment vs something an adult can dig into and actually enjoy once the kids go to bed.

The only thing worse then hearing Apple will pick up this franchise would be to find out ABC Freeform was going to distribute it. I don't care of the pedigree behind the showrunners of this franchise, Apple will force their hands creatively to suit Apple and so it will suck, period.
Just curious when any Apple executive said the company would only provide “wholesome” programming? As far as I know no one at Apple has gone on the record with any specifics about the company’s original content plans.

BEST NEWS EVER!

Greatest SF series of all time, I wondered why nobody ever made this into a movie/TV series.

Apple, please don’t f this up.

because its structure doesn't lend well to the big screen or even serialization.

how will the episodes be structured? will it be 1 episode a story. 1 season a book? how are watchers going to discern the jumping forward in time by dozens if not hundreds of years between each story.

I'm not saying it can't be done. i'mexcited for it, Foundation is one of my favourite Sci Fi series of all time. But it historically is just something that doesn't eaisly translate to screen. Especially all the psychobabble about Seldon's math.

You have a valid concern, I think, regarding Apple's feelings about mature content (for lack of a better term).

I, personally, will reserve judgment before I see what happens.

Seeing the changes Spielberg made to Ready Player One, however, vs the book doesn't make me all that optimistic. I mean Foundation is nerd central and would have to be changed, I imagine, if someone was mass-marketing it.

I would much rather they focus on story and character than HBO's hapless addiction to TV-MA.

Am I just romanticizing the past, or is anyone else wishing they'd log onto the "rumor mill" and read about something new and non-gimmicky in macOS (like the never-used "Spaces" or "Mission Control") that makes you just wanna say, "Cool!", instead of hearing about Apple getting into "Original Content".
BTW, is it just me, but are all Netflix Original series pretty decent, while Amazon series pretty much stink.

Thanks for letting me vent. Back to work.
[doublepost=1523382340][/doublepost]Also, regarding "inking" a deal. Shouldn't they be "Apple-Penciling" a deal?

Was skeptical about Apple TV shows... But if they succeed here, I am on-board. LOVE Foundation series. Highly recommend to everyone on here.

There is no subscription in iTunes Store and therefore absolutely no reason to produce such content.

I'm guessing Apple has their reasons. As a shareholder, I'm quite happy with their business decisions.

It's been speculated (and Apple has hinted) that they run iTunes for little to no profit at all, but use it as lead-in for product sales, where they have very high margins. If you want to watch Foundation, you'll need iTunes, and you'll probably watch it on an Apple TV, iPhone, or iPad.

Yep, all things lead back to hardware. It’s how Apple has always been.

Ok Apple...
Keep scratching this useless content itch of yours..

(psst - you aren't good at this..)

I think this is a great way to channel some profits, creating many jobs for many people. Take a look at the credits of any TV show or movie, amazing how many people it takes! If we get some entertainment as well even better. I am very interested in the SciFi stuff, seem SyFy channel wants to do horror and wrestling.

Give it a chance, you haven't seen any of their stuff to speak of. It can take a while to learn any business. You can't judge this kind of thing until many years have passed.

they should primarily focus on new Macs and their buggy SW. One of many reasons why everything is delayed and their SW so buggy.

Asimov's Foundation series is one of the truly great Science Fiction works and it'll be a huge challenge to do it justice. I see that Amazon Prime are also going to film Larry Niven's - Ringworld and Iain M.Banks' - Consider Phlebas. Also great works of Science Fiction that for their own reasons will be equally as difficult to film and bring to the screen in a manner that is worthy of the original material.

It'll be pretty exciting to see how well these projects go. Fingers crossed!

Welcome to the world of computers in 2018. We were spoiled by being allowed to watch the industry develop and mature over the last 40 years. The rapid-fire pace of "what's next" is gone virtually everywhere, not just at Apple.

Even smartphones quickly became that. Technology has stagnated because of the rapid expansion. Well, consumer technology has anyway.
