I hope you’re right. You’re still not disagreeing with my point. He’s doing fine now with existing product lines and tweaks to existing product lines. But we see people here every day pointing out that the software is falling behind, and that the Galaxy S23 Ultra looks quite compelling specifically because of the things Apple has removed from the iPhone or failed to add.

My concern is not for how much money he’s able to squeeze out of iPhone users now, but for the trajectory of the next few years.
I did disagree especially on the point about innovation over 12 years.

Every day a small vocal minority criticizes apple and notes how much more advanced Samsung is and then apple crushes it September through December - while we find out how poor Samsungs sales crisply are.

I agree I’m concerned about the trajectory along with you. The unknown can be scary but we’ll have to have faith, because we have nothing else, that apple will do the right thing for its customers.

I can at least name 2 things.
Maybe it’s more than 2 things, but at least 2 things that I have noticed.
This happens every day.
I have “tap to wake phone” enabled.

1 When I’m coming home from work, I wash my phone under water in the sink.
The reason for me doing this is because of my work. It’s for the bacteria🙂
When I’m finished I always have to enter pin code. Always.

2 When I’m sitting on my couch or at my desk I tap on the screen to see if I a get new notifications and also time.
I have my phone on the side and after doing this during the evening, like 5-6 times and then I take up my phone to unlock it, I have to enter pin code. Always.

So in my experience Apples Face id is not so good.
Maybe it’s because of my “old” 12 PM😁
If you are washing your phone like that without turning it off, you are probably triggering and failing FaceID multiple times due to the water and washing action. What that happens it looks to FaceID like someone has tried and failed to login multiple times so it goes into a mode where you have to put in your passcode. Not surprising. I usually just clean my phone with an alcohol wipe and it doesn’t seems to cause so may failed authentications.

It would be nice if Apple gave FaceID a wider effective angle on the phone. The iPad is better at off angle authentication. I guess I just don’t use my phone that way. I have an Apple watch that shows those kinds of notifications.

In general I think TouchID on my iP8 was more reliable than FaceID is on my iP13 mini, and it's *definitely* more reliable on any of my laptops and on my iPad Air than FaceID is on my phone.
You must have a weird face.

FaceID has worked 99% reliably on every iPhone since the XR. The only time it doesn't work is if I'm laying down looking up at my phone (rare).

TouchID inevitably failed after a few hours on every iPhone (5S, 6, 6S) and now the iPad Air. It was OK on the iPhone 5S but gets less reliable with each new device generation. The one on the iPad Air is worthless, to the point I turn it off and just use a passcode. None of the "tricks" work - multiple captures of the same fingers, keeping fingers and sensors clean, doing the hokey-pokey, whatever. I won't step up to a pricey, overkill iPad Pro just to get FaceID so that's that.

Sounds more like you have weird fingerprints. I said more reliable, I didnt say faceid doesnt work decently, just that touchid works much better. By contrast you’re saying touchid doesnt work for you at all.

TouchID can't handle the effects on fingerprints of cold weather, dry weather, and frequent hand washing and sanitizing (COVID). Capturing multiple fingerprints to cover each scenario doesn't work.

TouchID is a flawed concept anyway. Lots of factors change your fingerprints. A face doesn't change that much.

I just, this week, powered on and updated at the request of IT my older 2016 work MBP that I havent used in about 2 years now and first registered my fingerprints on it almost 7 years ago, touchid worked fine.

By contrast the last time I shaved my beard I had to redo faceid on my phone

In a shocking plot-twist, under-Display TouchID is supposed to debut in an upcoming Apple Watch Ultra to allow for better use of the device even if out of range of a paired iPhone.

I couldnt agree more. Removing 3D touch was probably one of the most stupid decisions Apple made in recent years.
Inn what circumstances was 3D Touch an improvement. I never noticed it doing more than saving one extra tap getting into an app. It was cumbersome to trigger properly and didn't seem to do much. Are there hidden functions and use cases that I just never saw?

stupid question but why is it taking Apple so long to implement this? I have it on my 300 EUR device from work and it is working great. It actually feels strangely satisfying to see the unlock animation on the screen :D
No clue. It's way past time. My Samsung tablet uses underscreen touchid and it works better than the iphone's faceid. Heck, I'd even want it on the power button if Apple is finding touchid too hard underscreen.

Can't wait to have TouchId back. Last year I upgraded from a phone that has it to the iPhone 14 Pro. I missed it then and I still miss it now. I must be using FaceID wrong because I just don't get how anyone can claim that FaceID is faster. By the time I have my iPhone enough in front of me to be able to unlock it, I could already have unlocked my other phone multiple times because I can unlock it literally while it's still in my pocket.

I can tell you. When i had XS, in two years, it happened maybe only once that i accidentally triggered light or camera. With the 13 mini(that doesnt have 3D), i basically trigger light or camera when taking phone out of my pocket every day at leat three times

I agree that those Lock Screen buttons should at least be long press to avoid inadvertent triggering.

Since there's tap-to-pay everywhere now, touch would be _much_ better for this use case.

FaceID is awkward, either I have to hold the card reqder in a strange way, or my face in a weird angle, or both - or I go back and forth between reader and phone. Simple touch ID would make it all work seamlessly with no contortions.

More reasons I'd like touch ID back - FaceID broke on my 11 pro after 3 years due to moisture - turns out iPhones are waterproof only for the first year or so - and it's very expensive to fix, I was quoted $300 for the original Apple part.

Touch ID never breaks at least since they no longer have physical buttons. iPhone 8 is flawless still.

FaceID sometimes doesn't work - wrong angle, face obscured, etc.

I am also somewhat concerned about the IR flash going off into my eyes 100s of times a day - it's a pretty strong flash you can see it with an IR camera, and it's flashing the face multiple times. It's cool to have a phone with fricken' lazers but ... if these lasers go off in my face all day long, maybe that's not so healthy.

I always wondered this. Your eyes can’t detect it but it’s still bright. Our pupils dilate when visible light is bright, presumably to mitigate damage so surely this IR isn’t great for our eyes as they can’t react to it?

I believe Apple developed FaceID partly to reclaim the space required for the button (virtual or physical). And it works for most people.

What were you doing to your phone where it got wet enough to suffer damage? I keep mine out of the rain and out of the pool.

As far as the FaceID lasers goes I don't think you have anything to worry about. InfraRed is also known as heat. You get more IR from the sun. Or a 100 Watt light bulb.

I don’t find tap-to-pay awkward with FaceID. I hold the phone up to my face and trouble-tap the side button. Then hold the phone to the reader. I suppose it isn’t any easier than touchID for this use but it works so much better than touchID in more situations that it doesn’t matter.

Umm.. somewhat embarassing but I went into a Sauna.

Sharing here so others don't do it.

I had the phone stuck on the top of my board shorts, so I must have sweated into it, or else it was the steam there.

Anyway phone in sauna is not a good idea. Lessons learned

Oohh, heat and humidity. That may be beyond the specs.

No home button, no sale. How many time do I have to keep saying this? I really like the fingerprint unlock feature. I worried about unlocking when I forgot my password and facial recognition failed. For convenience, third-party tools such as TunesKit iPhone Unlocker are a good choice. If the home button is still retained, then I will buy it.

Sadly you’re in the minority and Apple knows this. Like you, I would much rather Touch ID than Face ID but I think those days are gone and we just have to accept it.

I am holding on to my iphone 7+ for as long as I can

We want the Touch ID implemented!!!
Apple need to work in this direction because if the Touch ID will disappear probably I will change the direction and choose a Android phone... I'm using iPhone SE 3 generation. I'm happy with this for the moment and hopefully in the future when I will have to change Apple will offer a iPhone model with Touch ID. If not I will regretfully say goodbye to Apple...
