I think the odds of realistically producing a car that drives on roads alongside human drivers but has no pedals or steering wheel is approximately zero, at least in the "near to moderately-near future". I'm a big fan of aggressive innovation, but this is just not realistic in the world today.

I think they could probably produce something that works in "closed environments" like within a park or a campus, but a vehicle with no emergency human-override option on open roads is a non-starter. Let's not smoke too much dope here.

Woah woah woah, even those of us who smoke realize that the prospect of a steering wheel-less car in 2025 is bonkers ?

What could possibly go wrong? LOL. Just ask Tesla how hard autonomous driving us. FSD *still* doesn't come remotely close to what's its name implies after *years* of beta testing (by paid customers!)

More rumors? 2025 is a long time away. Never count Apple out but all the EV companies will have years of road testing by then.

Too many difficulties. Would only work if every car on the road was automated and that's going to take a century.

Manual cars can hit your self driving vehicle either by accident or deliberately.

Software bugs will always exist too. The best GPS location we have today still wobbles all over the map sometimes. Operating systems still crash and always will.

The more automated vehicles and more robots that come into being the more incidents of attacks on machines. Some attacks for fun, some attacks out of anger.

Comparing this to CarPlay? Huh :)

By the time this is safe to drive and actually accident free - well, sorry to say but you and me will be dead by then.

This is not happening and certainly not in 2025. Whoever thinks this is so close is crazy naive. Driving is mega complex thing with so many unique situations. This is probably 50 years away to be fully automated without human interaction.
Until then, there will be always some input from humans

This is going to be awesome!

It will be so great to go on long car trips and not have to stay awake to pay attention to the road

I currently have Apple CarPlay in my car now and use it all the time. I’m sure Apple will do a fantastic job with the technology in their future self driving car! Can’t wait to buy one!

There is no way on God’s green Earth that I am ever going to drive, much less own a car with no steering wheel and no pedals. Even Apple isn’t that good. Hard pass.
Me neither, but, if the target market is taxis and Uber/lyft etc, that would be different…

This is an admirable goal for Apple, Tesla, and others, and but US regulators are not going to allow a car without a steering wheel in the foreseeable future. How far out will it be? 15 years? Obviously I can’t say, but it’s clearly not going to be happening by 2025.

You’re absolutely right — you’re not going to drive it. And you’re probably also not going to own it as many signs point to shared autonomous cars in the future. Can’t wait!

Apple needs to hire some people from the Northeast or Alaska to work on their project.....places where you get something called WINTER. Roads are snow-covered, ice-covered, slush-covered....no center or side lines are visible....near whiteouts from 1 inch per hour snow blowing sideways....fully autonomous cars won't be a "thing" here for decades.

The perfect design was created years ago. AI, bullet proof, scratch proof, self drive, manual drive, boost control, turbo mode.

Don't mess with this design or you will go wrong.

Should it not be able to meet its aims, Apple could delay launch or sell a car that's less technologically advanced.
Wouldn't they need a steering wheel and pedals etc to be selling less technologically advanced car?? It's not like a MacBook Pro where you can just leave out a Face ID camera because you couldn't make it work on time.

None of this may actually ship, but I do appreciate that Apple seems interested in Level 1 self-driving (Driver Assistance), and Level 4/5 self-driving (High/Full Driving Automation); given that all the levels in between are just asking for distracted drivers getting into accidents.
