Nice, looking forward to this.

If some people want to stay stuck in the past, that's fine too.

It will never happen, Apple maybe good at some things but a fully autonomous car on the roads in 4 years time??!!, nope, not going to happen.

Good grief, call me old fashioned but I wouldn’t want to drive this car! And I can’t see many laws allowing it either, most laws state driverless cars must have full controls and licensed drivers able to drive behind the wheel, and that’s before the first fully autonomous vehicle is launched.
you’ll in essence be beta testing brand new never tried before technology with NO control over it.
On a first gen Apple new product……

it's pretty clear that Apple is playing the Market !

The timing of this just-AFTER Rivian ?

Seriously ???

Why isn't CNBC mentioning the timing of this ?

Did Munster say anything ? He was just one ... NOPE !

It's 1999 ALL over again !
so e have to go through that whole Y2K crap again???

No steering wheel or pedals. It sounds very boring. They’re making taxis…

This is likely just a stupid rumour. You'd have to perfect handsfree driving before removing the steering wheel and pedals and that is hardly the current situation.

This is going to be awesome!

It will be so great to go on long car trips and not have to stay awake to pay attention to the road

I currently have Apple CarPlay in my car now and use it all the time. I’m sure Apple will do a fantastic job with the technology in their future self driving car! Can’t wait to buy one!
Careful.. when in your memory did a .0 version of any apple xos worked flawlessly?

the thing is, you CANNOT drive this car :p
I quite frankly think that is is an Apple planted rumor to gather market reactions ...

Siri. Siri everyone. That is A.I and that is severely lacking. They can’t even get that right. Multi level queries non existent yet and are so easy to do. Their has to be a LOT of Algorithm for crash avoidance and situation delegation of action in the event the crash wasn’t avoided and is now imminent. Frozen ice or the car swerved to avoid hitting being hit and then now their is a person in the way or a dog. Simply stopping won’t always be an option. I don’t even think their is enough data yet to allow these things. The driver needs input in case some weird situation like you’re heading for a cliff now or about to go into a a lake right over the guardrail or something the car simply doesn’t understand or was trained for yet. Until EVERY car is self driving on the road, Zero input self driving can’t nor should be allowed.

Ah yes, you ride in it and trust a robot to drive you around in a what 1.5 tonne vehicle at speed… in 4 years time.. this will only be in a location like the Apple campus or something, they will need to convince people in general let alone governments that it’s safe! It’s like would you trust a plane to land itself with no pilots or manual controls? Because they can do so right now, but let it do it with no pilots or controls? No.

There is no way on God’s green Earth that I am ever going to drive, much less own a car with no steering wheel and no pedals. Even Apple isn’t that good. Hard pass.
But 45,000 people die in car crashes in the US every year due to human frailties such as drinking/ road rage/poor eyesight/ aggressive nature/poor overall skills etc etc etc….autonomous will stop all the dying. Why would u not want that?

The amount of time this rumor has been alive, divided by the number of engineers involved multiplied by the lack of test mules also tells me that Apple isn’t even remotely past the software stage of development. Apple can accomplish wonders, but I think they are out of their depth here.

No one wants anyone to die on the road, I certainly don’t, but people die every day from something. Technology cannot save everyone from everything, that is such a naive point of view. Stop trying to guilt shame me with that silliness.

Autonomous is a fantasy, whether you’re Elon Musk or Tim Cook. The processing power and the AI just aren’t even close to being ready for “real” driving on the road. It’s another 10 years at least, cars can barely do lane keep assist on a rainy road much less make a dozen decisions a second to keep from crashing the car.

As much as I would love to see an earth shattering innovation in that category, I don’t think Kevin will fix Titan for Apple. He seems like a very smart and talented and surprisingly down-to-earth guy but if you’ve followed a bit of the development of Watch OS under his management, there is no breakthrough except a consistent style of usability improvements.

All sympathies aside, if he can’t innovate, he’ll just put a button on it. Literally, just a generic button. No room for an elegant and necessary symbiosis of technology, service design and product design, just an almost brutalist approach to it all. Simplicity but not informed by intelligence and car(e).
