Is Bloomberg just watching Pixar's Wall-E again, and hallucinating? I don't think I'll live long enough to see anything without a steering wheel or physical brake outside of a Segway scooter.

Apple wants to design a car that lacks a steering wheel or pedals, and with an interior that's aimed at hands-off driving.
That's a very noble ambition, but I can't see that happening for another generation at least. The wild card in all this is that the roads are filled with non-autonomous cars driven by humans who make mistakes. Humans can (and often do) make mistakes, but they can also make out-of-the-box split decisions of which computers are not yet capable. For instance, if a car suddenly pulls out in front of me while I'm driving, I have to instantly decide whether it's best to swerve or go behind the car or slam on the brakes or speed up to avoid it. I'm pretty sure Apple is thinking about all that, but the logistical challenges of entrusting all of that to a computer without any human interaction is not something I would do -- unless all the other cars on the road were autonomous as well. Computers normally won't run stop lights or try to cut you off in traffic like humans do.

Sounds a little unrealistic but ok.

Apple didn't say it, Fin Media did.

Fin Media needs to suck money out of the public before the next market crash or big correction. They are master liars and manipulators. They go through phases of hyping things. It's easier to focus and narrow in on traders and retail investors that way. One week hype new medicine, one week hype a meme, next week hype a few IPOs, next week hype self driving cars.

They all chat on secret channels to decide what to publish, which days to scare people, which days to get people to buy.

Bloomberg, Marketwatch, CNBC, Forbes, whatever.

All master manipulators chatting together on secret channels. They will always manipulate traders and investors who are not part of their circle. They are all born with a silver spoon in their mouth, Ivy League American Psycho scum.

They even manipulate and control the meme stuff like Gamestop, AMC, crypto, doggy coin and all the other memes. Retail investors think they have control of memes. No, they got manipulated and gamed from the start. It's a closed club and retail investors aren't in it.

It's not gonna happen.

It is inevitable... maybe NOT by 2025... but anyone not too old right now will find themselves talking about "the good old days when we used to have to focus our attention on the task of driving cars ourselves... yes they had these things called steering wheels... and you had to push pedals with your feet... no you couldn't watch movies or play games while you drove- you had to focus your attention on the driving."

There's too much B2B money in kicking the unionized "labor" drivers out of trucking/cabbing/etc. Look what Uber/Lyft has accomplished without unionized labor. Step back not very long and most would say they would never get in some random strangers car for a ride. Now it's almost commonplace. Replace that human driver with no driver and the financial cut to the human driver gets to stay with the car owner.

When I trust "drivers" of all types that I never see- train/plane/monorail- and barely see- bus- I simply HOPE that they are capable of doing the job of getting me from here to there. In many cases, I put my life in the hands of a complete stranger. They could be drunk/doped/suicidal and I probably don't know or can't know... and yet I simply take my seat and hope for the best.

In this version of that, your driver probably won't be drunk/doped/suicidal (as much) as stranger (humans) you trust regularly to get you from here to there... without even thinking about it.

This will never see the light of day and be driving on public streets in any of our lifetimes.
Fully Self-driving cars (without a steering wheel) will likely follow the same course as nuclear fusion.

Your grandfather or great-grandfather probably swore the same about horseless carriages... and then soon were enjoying showing others their brand new cars.

I wonder how these things would work in the winter in Canada when the road is covered in a foot of ice and snow.

How does it work now with human drivers? They drive slower? This could slow down too? They "see" more dangerous situation and adapt. This could "see" such things and adapt too. They know when they need chains on the tires. This could know that too. Etc.

This is going to be awesome!

It will be so great to go on long car trips and not have to stay awake to pay attention to the road

I currently have Apple CarPlay in my car now and use it all the time. I’m sure Apple will do a fantastic job with the technology in their future self driving car! Can’t wait to buy one!
1st gen Buyer beware - it might be your last car

Why? The future is going to be walkable/cyclable cities, with quality public transit between (and within) them for longer distances.

The only thing that makes being in a small vehicle enjoyable is the *control* the person has over it. I'd rather be in a train than a small 'autonomous' vehicle.

Americans just really can't see past the car... SMH...

No...their PHONE doesn't work well in cold...imagine a car

This is from the people unable to proper bend-test a piece of aluminum (iPhone 6, iPad), foreign particles-test the butterfly keyboard, stress-test the flex in the 2016-2017 MB Pro screens...

I think they could probably produce something that works in "closed environments" like within a park or a campus, but a vehicle with no emergency human-override option on open roads is a non-starter. Let's not smoke too much dope here.
I see substantial possibilities for eventually ending up with some roads (or lanes of roads) that are eventually "driverless only" or "automated driving only". Just the way that some freeways currently have carpool lanes, you could have a driverless lane on the freeway where you get into the adjacent lane and hit a button for "my destination is exit 719 please drive me there", and the car takes over and moves you into the driverless lane and handles all the driving in that lane until you're a couple minutes away from your exit (there's also a serious problem lurking with the "how do you make sure the driver is ready to drive when then automated portion ends, when they may have dozed off or worse?"). The car could communicate with other nearby vehicles and with some transit authority to ensure that your vehicle is capable of the journey (if for instance your tank/battery is almost empty and you request a 100 mile drive, it says, "sorry, no"; same if your tires are dangerously under-inflated or some such). And some combination of the cars and the transit authority can control the whole lane to ensure optimal speed, following distance, etc. (keeping in mind that much of the current following distance is to account for human reaction time, while computers can react nearly instantly).

Something like this would make "driverless" cars great for the large middle part of a long drive (or, say, a lengthy commute). But it does nothing for the last few miles on either end, that needs human control, or at the very least the ability to immediately override the car to take manual control (so, a steering wheel or similar is needed). At least until we get to the point where we've rolled out huge changes to road infrastructure designed to accommodate completely driverless driving on city streets.

Hahaha NOPE. Never going to own a car "without human backup systems" of some fashion. Not my lifetime. Hard Pass.

In fact if it has seats going sideways, that's a HUGE risk to occupants in a frontal crash. How do you put enough protection or airbags? This Apple Car will be on the road with other, you know human controlled cars, and accidents will happen.

Why? The future is going to be walkable/cyclable cities, with quality public transit between (and within) them for longer distances.
What is the year you have planned for removing all the streets from existing cities to upgrade them like this? Or do you propose abandoning all the current cities and building new cities that have been properly laid out to accommodate walking and cycling better?

It's 2021, we've had hybrid cars available for well over a decade, and quite a few electric cars available for some years now, yet we still have gasoline-engined cars from the 70's and 80's on the road in some places. Just because a new better thing is available doesn't mean the old thing instantly goes away (unless you're personally supplying all the money for the transition). We're going to have cities with roads in them for a long time to come. It's not a matter of them being better or more desirable than bicycles and public transport, it's just... big changes take time. That's the way the world works.

Excuse my french but...

are you on ****ing drugs?

thats all... and im one of those humans who will never get a fully autonomous car... I cannot let a machine decide what is better for me in critical situation unless we are in the year 3050... other than that i wont let any choppy intent of AI to take control over my life... I'm saving full submission for when an actual fully functioning self aware AI exist

Well I was making some jokes in that post.

But, every time you fly, probably about 85% of the flight has the plane in auto-pilot mode. You've been trusting software to make life-death decisions for you just about every time you've flown anywhere.

I fully grasp concerns in this thread. It seems wondrous... especially by 2025 (if that happens). But it seems that we all have only one vision of this: it splattering us as soon as we give it a try. New technology doesn't automatically fail with deadly results in first releases to the public. How many of us were killed by iPhone 1, iPad 1, Watch 1, M-Series Mini 1? Harmed? Slightly injured?

How many new models of Airplanes have your boarded and flown without giving a thought to all the brand new technologies in play? Brand new train/subway? Brand new monorail? Bullet trains?

None of that says this is all slam dunk. But it's also not raging disaster that will kill all who try it.

There are currently ENTIRELY self driving semi trucks RIGHT NOW on our hiways with full commercial loads

Started right here in Tucson Az
Right now the TuSimple trucks are driving loads between Phoenix & Houston Tx and points in between for over a year now

So there is that....

You forgot to mention how they are programmed to smash every human they encounter and seek out orphanages to level as they go rogue. Skynet conspiracy. The machines will kill us all!!!

Now hand me my iPhone, this iPad is getting heavy and I can't do what I need to do on Watch. Can't wait for the goggles. ;)

Err, a plane holding/descending/climbing to an altitude or following programmed waypoints all while being actively monitored and ultimately ‘controlled’ by 2 pilots is quite different than letting a fully autonomous system have all the control.

No steering wheels and pedals wow! Who’s saving up for Apple car already?

View attachment 1913391
So many questions....Will the price be discounted, since it's missing the steering wheel and peddles? Will it come with AppleCare+? Will they give us tools and parts so we can fix it by ourselves, (referring to the news this week of Apple 'opening up' more for the right to repair crowd? Will it only come in Graphite, Silver, Gold and Sierra blue? Will there be a season color for a purple shade? /S (just being facetious). Exciting 'speculative news'. Can't wait till this Apple Event happens!!!!!

And people were lost without the home button? Wow...

Any Hitchhiker fans? Remember the steering wheel from the Heart of Gold in the movie? The size of a damn good New York bagel? It would seem any 'car' has to have at least some way to control it, or one huge red stop button that stops it cold, right there. Maybe with a 'pull over and die' button that will at least try to ascertain where the nearest area to shutdown is.

This isn't Minority Reports. There aren't other autonomous controlled vehicles out there, and the roads are not free of 'distractions' like people, kids, dogs, cats, small creatures from Alpha Centauri. Imagine being in a plane with no cockpit. Yeah, so seriously not even willing to think about getting into something like that. It'll be a REALLY hard sell...

EDIT: Funny thing though. A sarcastic psychiatrist I know, when I told him I had a fear of flying (my wife said it was a 'fear of losing control') said 'What's to fear about flying? You sit in a seat with a 300 pound person smashing you into the person on the other side of you, and the plane, if it crashes, it's over in seconds!'. Except, all too often it's NOT over 'in seconds'. Some crashes have played out over 30 or more minutes. I mean, if it was guaranteed that it would end in seconds, I guess that would be acceptable, but to spend 30 minutes in a plane about to crash, with no one able to potentially save it? I'll walk...

'Controlled'. They have comparable accelerator, brakes, steering wheel. Taking all of that out of the cockpit, well, now that's just insane...
