Just wanted to confirm this. After the iOS 5 update, my iPhone 4 gobbled up the battery and sometimes ran hot in standby, even when switched to flight mode (I noticed this on a transcontinental flight of 5 hours, which drained the battery from 100 to 50%). There were also lots of error messages in the diagnostics log under General/About. After a "Reset all Settings" as described above, everything is back to normal, and no more errors. Go figure ...

I followed the advice above and did the following after seeing my phone drain about 4% an hour, even over night. Woke up to a dead phone.
1) Turned off certain location services that seemed to be "on all the time", mainly "Setting time zone".

-no change

2) Recharged it to 100% in one go and leaving it in the charger for a long time after reaching 100% to recalibrate the battery.

-no change. Still drained 4-5% an hour on standby.

3) Reset all settings then restore from icloud and do a restart or two. Did not sync music/video to device yet.

- Better, still got "Setting time zone" turned off, otherwise everything is on. I have not synced my media(music/videos) yet because I want to test if the change worked first. So far I've gone some time with the phone in standby and very light use and the dropping is better. But still atleast 3% per hr in standby mode.

I have about 8-10 apps "running" while in standbymode by the way.

4) Tried a DFU reset, only thing I did was download contacts and a few other things from icloud. Otherwise no syncing. Problem still there. No apps running, no additional location services other than a few of the apple ones. Still losing 1-2% per 30mins.

I upgraded directly from a 4 and my battery life is MUCH worse. Running the same exact apps.

It seems everybody has an answer for this by turning off something, but I can assure you this is a bug. I updated my 4 to IOS5 and it dies within 7 hours without any use. I also purchased a 4S and it does the same exact thing. I have done nearly everything everybody has said to try with no success. I have restored the phones without installing apps or using iCloud, both phones die within 7 hours with me touching them. I charge my phone to 100% at night and wake up to the both dead. If I do use my phone for anything at all, I'll be lucky if I can go 4 hours without having to charge either of them. It's terrible. Now my 4S won't even charge to 100% anymore. First it would only go to 98% and now as of last night I can only get 96%. I can say I'm pretty disappointed and I know they'll come out with a fix, but I'm afraid I'm killing my batteries having to charge them nonstop. I'll be very unhappy if I have to get my 4S swapped out and they give me a refurbished phone after only 1 month of use.

I don't think my phone has poor battery life, it lasts a while on a full charge the problem I have is my first 4s (white got it probably 3 months ago) was fine for 2 weeks or so then it started dying when the battery said 70% despite hard resets etc, so I got it replaced with another 4s and Ive had it prob a month or so and its starting to turn off around 50% battery.

Its annoying as fk, Hard to tell if my battery is dying quick or not because it'll stay on 100% for over 2 hours so I assume its extremely uncalibrated. How can I fix this? I've tried holding sleep+home button, doesnt seem to help, it was actually fine like a week ago went down to like 15-20% just to see if it was still fine and then recharged it and died at 30% then 50% etc...sucks, what can I do?
