Most? Haha, try getting 2yrs standard warranty from Dell without paying for it.

keyword 'EITHER' and most Dell standard warranties are 1yr, anything more cost extra. Wait, that sounds like Apple Care. And yes they and Apple WILL fix a product but it will cost, same as Dell, it costs.

HP is also 1yr standard. So that's 2 big name companies down, We can pull others, so where's this "most" your talking about?

I can say with easy to find google proof that MOST computer companies offer 1yr standard with the option to buy more at a cost. Same with Apple.

The only big difference I see is that (like with Dell for example) you can opt for more years of warranty, but then again, Apple Care is 3yrs which is still the most time others offer as well.

The only manufacturer that offers more than 1-year is HP Corporate Notebooks, which are 3-years...

Asus might be 2??

I wouldn't even bother writing to corporate Apple - you are in the wrong. That's what things like iCal reminders are for.
Having said that, if it did go wrong in a major way you could go somewhere like a Consumer Watchdog, as electronics are supposed to last a lot longer than a year and that companies therefore have a moral right to fix things say in the 1 to 2 year period. I don't know how this works in the US.
Personally many electronics have pointless extended warranties (fridges, cookers etc) but computers are different. You should sell soon or treat it gently as possible.

I was replying to another poster who wrote about european warranties. And after a really quick google search it seams they really shortened them relatively recently. So I'm sorry & you are right.

I'm still pretty sure I've seen many 2 years standard warranties though.

"According to some EU legislation published in 1999, since 2002 it has become a legal requirement that all consumer goods sold in the EU must have a minimum of a 2 year warranty."

but...

"Time limits

The seller shall be held liable under Article 3 where the lack of conformity becomes apparent within two years as from delivery of the goods. If, under national legislation, the rights laid down in Article 3(2) are subject to a limitation period, that period shall not expire within a period of two years from the time of delivery."

So like many laws this is complicated, and comes down to the "you have to prove the fault was there to begin with" thing I wrote in my first post.

This law came out in 2002, and of course there are back doors.

It is sad how computer manufacturers are starting to cut standard warranties down to 1 yr. Dell is one of the few still offering 3yr standard on their business class notebooks (the Latitude line).

Even Lenovo, who used to offer 3 yr standard on higher-end Thinkpad models is down to 1yr standard. Even their X300 system (I want one but can't afford it haha) only comes with 1 yr and that thing hovers around $2,500 as a starting price.

My current T61 has been an absolutely fantastic computer and I got an amazing price on it (around $1,000 for a $2,000+ system due to a canceled corporate order they were trying to sell off) so I will be purchasing the extended warranty before this August when the warranty runs out.

Lesson learned here, make sure to watch those warranty expiration dates. Lenovo will probably be sending me an e-mail any day now as a reminder but I also have it down on my calendar to call them up on August 1st to add an additional 2 yrs to my system.

Proof about Dell's Latitude as I should probably back my claim here

I say sell the current system and just get a new one and purchase Apple Care at the time of purchase. I'm thinking about getting a Mac Pro and I sure as heck will be buying it on that system (thank you ebay for cheap Apple Care hehe).
