The package it's in has a big tear in the back and it's taped to hold it together. Can someone tell me what exactly they received to make sure I am not missing anything. There is a hole in the back of the package , the tape is what is covering the hole. I have not opened it yet.

What's inside? A code. If it works, you are fine.

The only thing in the box is the little book and the number, why would you want a new box to throw away. Assuming the reg code works

May have had stickers, not sure.

go to apple and enter the model number in on the laptop and see if it has coverage for 3 years

I didn't find any code inside. Only a getting started guide and a sheet of paper titled AppleCare Protection Plan Certificate.
I assume you bought Applecare with a computer. If so, all you get in that envelope is the certificate verifying that you have Applecare on your computer.

Straight from Apple.com. I guess I'll try contacting them tomorrow.

If there is an Apple Store just drop by and give them a mean look.

Get a New packet, even if you only really need the code, there is not reason a damaged good should be sent via on-line shopping.

Also, as a minimum ensure that you are enrolled for the applecare. The apple store staff should be able to demonstrate this to you.
