A source connected to Apple's AppleCare customer service call centers has reportedly indicated to AppleInsider that the company is expecting a large influx of iOS-related support calls beginning Monday, October 10th, potentially signaling a release of iOS 5 to current users on that date.
For instance, one person familiar with the matter said his local AppleCare call center has been told to expect an eightfold increase in customer calls on that day, and that staff are being advised ahead of time for the increased traffic.

The person could not say with any certainty what will be released on that Monday, but noted that the increase in call volume is related to iOS. This led them to speculate that Apple could release iOS 5 and iCloud on Oct. 10.
Apple has in the past released iOS major updates a few days ahead of the new hardware running the operating system, spreading out demand for support services.

- 2008: iPhone OS 2.0 and iPhone 3G both released on July 11th
- 2009: iPhone OS 3.0 released on June 17th, iPhone 3GS released on June 19th
- 2010: iOS 4.0 released on June 21st, iPhone 4 released on June 24th

A planned October 10th debut of iOS 5 for existing hardware lines up nicely with current rumors of Apple shooting for October 5th for final carrier certification of the new operating system and a "mid-October" release of the new hardware, perhaps at the end of that week.

October 14 is looking more and more like the official iPhone 5 launch day! Almost exactly a month away!

Can't wait till iOS 5. Now my iPad is jailbroken, only because of the multitouchgestures. (I've already got used to them)

Yeah, the waiting has gone past good anticipation to slightly miffed and headed toward 'whatever'. I had hoped that we'd at least get an invitation to a planned event by now. Something to hold interest. Seriously, mine's starting to wane. :(

So if this rumor is true, that means the iPhone will come out Oct 14.

Which means we won't see a event until the end of Sept or early Oct.

Lame.

Agreed. I just want something concrete and not just rumours. I would love for event invites to go out tomorrow.

Me too, but if these rumors turn out to be true, then the event probably won't be until the end of September? :(

I am not sure how they "know", training for iOS 5 HAS NOT been given to ANY call center folks just yet, they must be LYING.

Android is looking better every day!

All this hoopla on IOS betas and anticipated releases dates is becoming nauseating. Apple makes a small variety of handsets compared to other vendors and it has taken them so long to get this one out that both the OS and the new hardware better be worth all this wait. I have been in iPhone user since day one, but my son was home the other day, an ATT employee with his Android handset and let me tell you, it looked damned good.

Letting their product slip beyond their normal release cycles is a faux pas in my opinion. I am giving them until the end of October. If it isn't out by then, my next handset will be an Android based product.

I hope your Android phone is everything you want and more, and provides you nothing but happiness. If you really want to switch then nothing can be said to dissuade you and you will do it regardless of Apples actions.

Thank you for announcing it though

I've been using iOS 5 beta for so long that I forgot how excited people must be for this.

Spoiler alert: it's great

agreed... what's interesting is how awesome these great new features make everyday life easier, how did i ever get by with just iOS4?

October 10th is Thanksgiving in Canada - not sure they'd release it then

I just want to point something out:

October 10th is Thanksgiving here in Canada, which doesn't seem like an ideal day to release a new product.

No problem glad you appreciated it. Even though my shop is 100% Apple, it's always about the solution not the technology. When a technology provider chooses to make customers wait and wait and wait for hardware and software, then other things that are more up to date and current become options. It's just good business to keep options open!

I hope your Android phone is everything you want and more, and provides you nothing but happiness. If you really want to switch then nothing can be said to dissuade you and you will do it regardless of Apples actions.

Android has some really cool looking flash/bing/coolstuff and some other tweaks. I just dislike how often I have to help my son and wife go through the process of "actually" deleting apps off the phone that they don't use. often they don't care because it's not on the homescreen, but when they click that apps folder they hate to see them there, and it's just a big circle when you tap, drag the icon to the trash and nope, it's not deleted :).

My wife's next phone is the iPhone 4+, easy to work with, and easier to play with.
