Seriously? If he doesn’t bother upgrading he’ll still use his phone the same amount of time and it’ll cost nothing. Is the iOS experience on the X worth over a grand compared to his current model?

Apple is being exceptionally greedy this year and seemingly going all out to recuperate, in one hit, the total spend on the sheer opulence that is their new headquarters.

Yes.

It's more worth it in the iPhone Upgrade Program for yearly upgraders because it's half the cost (for instance, if you bought it outright every year it would be $396 vs. $199).
Unfortunately the Upgrade program is hampered by Apple's bizarre decision to tie it to having a postpaid carrier account, even though the carrier isn't providing the financing. Those of us with prepaid accounts (which I think offer better value, especially for one line) can't take advantage of it.

How awesome would it have been if they included AppleCare with the purchase of the iPhone X. Just a thought.
It would be nice, wouldn't it?

To everyone complaining, just don't get AppleCare aka extended warranty. There is no reason to get it if you use a phone case.
I think this x version might require apple care plus. Didn't they say it's OLED? wouldn't that cause burn-in within screen? Also, it's ip67 (not everyone cares), so incase rain drops goes into the phone..or whatever related to water damage...wouldn't that require ac plus?

Just saying. It's an expensive phone...i think maximum protection might be a great idea.

Really starting to not be worth it. I think at this point most repair shops can fix most issues for $199 (or less) and the thing is already water resistant. It's more worth it in the iPhone Upgrade Program for yearly upgraders because it's half the cost (for instance, if you bought it outright every year it would be $396 vs. $199). They should offer a 1 year AppleCare+ option for half the price for those who buy outright.
I believe you can cancel it after a year and get a partial refund. I haven't tried it though.

Oof. And I thought $129 was too much for the AC+.

Very glad I am not updating...this is just another reason why it'll be better for me to stick with iPhones that are a gen or two behind since I do not use all the bells and whistles anyway.

You can request a pro-rated refund at any time* with AC, I've done this every time I've traded in an iPhone with no problem. Just be polite and they'll refund the balance.

*Do not remember if you have to wait the year or if can you request earlier.

AMOLED is as expensive to replace as it is gorgeous to look at. We went through a few screens before my wife gave up on elegance and bought the clunky but reliable OtterBox.

Shareholders "so timmy, how do you plan to recuperate what you spent on that new shiny building of yours?

Timmy at the shareholders meeting. " dont worry, people will pay anything we ask. We are gonna raise all the prices across the board even on products that are already out".

Shareholders, brilliant! Here is a bonus.

My guess is that the OOW prices for the iPhone X will be something like $199 for screen repair and then $399 or $429 for a replacement unit.

Goddamn expensive. There was no need to raise prices for older devices!

I'd say it's good business. They already know that people will have no problem paying $1000+ for the new X. Charge them a little more when it comes to the AppleCare because those customers have already demonstrated that they will pay it.

Apple knows how to use their brand to improve their bottom line. I'd say it's quite smart.
We'll pay it now cause we have to. But apple loyalty is fading because of stuff like this, what happens when there's a sexier option as other companies are about there. That's when a lot of people will gladly switch.

Yeah, and as I found out the other day after switching to T-Mobile earlier this year it’s a huge headache for people on that carrier because they can’t verify my account online. It’s dumb that they have to verify. Someone said it was to prevent scalpers, but I said that makes as much sense as DRM: scalpers will always find a way and customers end up punished for it. At the very least they could limit it to one or two per card and address! I also don’t see how scalpers could open up so many anyway since it requires a credit check and it would see a ton of checks for one person. They really need to fix this crap. I think this year I’m just gonna have to bite the bullet and pay for unlocked without AppleCare. I’ve never damaged an iPhone to where I’d need to fix it aside from some small scratches or dents and I’ve only had AppleCare for the last two years with the upgrade program. But how do I get rid of my iPhone I’m making payments on now if I buy it outright? Can I just give it back? Not worth the trade-in value to pay it off.

They're really doubling down on the Apple Tax.

- $1300 for a 128GB laptop that can't be upgraded
- $1000 for a 64GB iPhone
- They raised the price on the 256GB iPad Pros by $50 today
- $700 for an iPhone with a design from 2014

These just keep creeping up every year... I remember it had stayed the same under SJ for years. (But I might be incorrect). Timmy's gotta show financial growth figures I guess...
You're correct, however that was because that while under SJ, AppleCare never covered accidental damage. Now it does.

Anytime people say things like this, I assume they find no value in the features that are supposed to distinguish this model from the lower-priced model. In this case, the OLED display has no value, Face ID (and all the sensors needed to make it work) has no value, OIS for the telephoto back camera has no value, a Plus-sized display in a standard-sized case ... I'm not saying people ought to value those things - different strokes for different folks.

However, bundling a $150-$200 product into a product priced $200 higher than iPhone 8 Plus would be an admission by Apple that the iPhone X is not worth the money they're asking. That they simply cannot do.

Like any other company that offers products at varying price points, Apple expects that they can justify the higher price to those who are able and willing to pay a higher price. In fact, if Apple does their job right, the people who do decide to pay the higher price will believe they're getting greater value than the difference in price suggests.

To paraphrase a line from Disney/Pixar's The Incredibles, when every model is Deluxe, than no model is.

There are people out there who are worried that an iPhone with a glass back will be more likely to need repair than an iPhone with a metal back. If they turn out to be right, then Apple has to price AppleCare+ for the new iPhones higher than it's been for iPhones 5-7. Consider it the hidden cost of wireless charging.

I think you went way too deep into my minuscule post. It was simply a gesturing thought, not a practical reality. So I reply in kind, I was not being serious, I was being facetious. I realize Apple is a company they can't meet everybody's expectations, and I certainly wouldn't expect them to meet the expectations of including AppleCare with the purchase of the new iPhone. Especially given we can't factor in everything that Apple can incorporate bundling things together for the sake of consumer appreciation. That's not always possible.

"Way too deep" is who I am. ;-)

My apologies for not catching your facetious intent. Considering how many people on these forums make comments of the sort in dead earnest, I trust I'll be forgiven.

Thanks, to all you who abusively ran naked with your phones - and then cried to Apple to replace them whenever it got a scratch or some damage.

You have now caused us all to incur a lot more money, for those of us who actually take care of our phones and hadn't need to replace them due to true accident or manufacturing defects.

Your fault!

Well doesn't accidental damage have a separate per incident fee anyway? Like an X amount for screen replacement, another X amount per incident, etc. If you're going to charge per incident, why build that cost into AppleCare? Seems like they're just gouging at that point
