AppleCare Protection Plan is the way to go...

Here in California, Education Discount will get you APP for $183 USD and that's OTD. Which is a significant amount of savings. And yes, if you plan on selling your MB, APP is transferrable and can make your sale a bit more attractive. I couldn't dream of owning a MB without APP, if not for the Apple Store support then the Tech support on the phone is just as valuable. I've kept the APP support staff pretty busy the past (7) months and it's been well worth the initial $183 investment. APP = Don't leave the Apple Store without it!

Besides the student discount for ($239) is there a cheaper place to find this? I suppose ebay but what about any disount sites

its only 183 for the macbook. Its 239 for a macbook pro.

Thanks for the replies, it's been really helpfull.

I've actually just phoned the Applestore in the UK, as my girlfriend already has a 15" Macbook Pro bought recently here in the UK. I asked "if I am in the US (as I usually am once or twice a year) and purchase an Applecare plan will it I be able to use it in the UK on a UK Macbook Pro". I was told repeatedly that the Applecare is Worldwide, and that i should have no problems. If they're as good as there word then that's my problem solved!

....now to dig out my credit card, MBP & ACD here I come!!

Yes AppleCare is worldwide, well except for the iPhone one I think. If they sell they have a Apple Store in that country, you can get it fixed there.

For example, right now I can set up Genius bar appointment online at the Birmingham Store in UK if I wanted.

It's $183 (MB/MBA)/$240(MBP) as long as you show your student ID, they will sell it you at that price. Seriously, if you meet a swell guy/gal, he/she will just make up a school if need be.
