Might as well send it in and see if they will ship it to your new location. I have the matte display on my 15" pro, and I love it. After seeing the thread title, I thought this would be a happy thread :)

Stationed

You said you were "stationed" in Kuwait. So either you are in the military or work around the military so be safe and if you are a soldier I appreciate what you do the USA even if I don't agree entirely how the government uses its military but either way be safe and thanks. OH and good luck with applecare

Wow. Lots of responses. I'll go one by one. Quick update as of last night is that I did log the complaint. Also spoke to CR and they denied a loaner, an update or an expedited repair. I do have a letter to sjobs drafted and will be sending it out today. At this point though, I highly doubt I will exchange the machine even if they offer me a new one.

Sushi,

Thanks for the encouraging reply. I feel better knowing that a rebuild won't result in less stability. And you're right. They kept testing the machine and fixed new things as they came up. It went in for a LCD and keyboard. The logic board came up on the last day. While they were testing that, the airport card must have failed. I can't explain why I'm attached to a computer. I love the all silver design and it works well for what I need. It's also a question of familiarity. I have a huge assignment coming up this year, I'm used to my machine and keyboard and it helps me get my job done better.

Anuba,

I filed the complaint with Apple on April 6th when I was stationed in Kuwait. They asked me to go into the local store for service. Service in Kuwait was a joke. They could call them 'morons' instead of 'genius' and be accurate. They wanted 3 months to fix the issues. Apple also said I couldn't mail it directly to them from Kuwait even if I paid the shipping costs.

The international 'warranty' is a joke.

Alpha,

you could call customer relations and ask for a new computer. That is a big screw up in addition to the half dozen major parts having been replaced.

Yep. I know they'll give me a new one given the history. I'm one of those dummies who prefers the one I have and want to keep it for a long time ...

Uberamd,

No dice. They'll ship it to a US address and it can then be sent on to me. But I won't have a chance to test it here and can't take the risk of being stuck in Kuwait with a problem once it gets there. I'd rather deal with the matte since everything else works at this point.

Everyone,

It's funny. 60% of you say that the matte is an upgrade. :) :). All a matter of opinion I guess. This machine will now be my inside machine. DVDs, writing, research etc. Even while I used it 'outside' or in my office, I prefer the glossy. It really isn't that bad. It's also a matter of principle. They can't mess up and replace a screen with matte when it's glossy!

Andrew,

You said you were "stationed" in Kuwait. So either you are in the military or work around the military so be safe

Thanks mate. I don't agree with a lot of high level decisions but at the end of the day, the soldiers risk their lives every day for us civilians and are also following orders that they may disagree with. Living in KWI has given me a completely different perspective on this issue and a lot of appreciation for the military.

For those of you still following this saga, I've decided to kick up a fuss. I can get used to the matte screen if I need to but my computer is mooing! Yep - the same issue that made me return two machines back in 2006 is back with a vengeance. I cannot stand that high pitched sound. It's driving me nuts.

It happens only when the power cord is plugged in.

Is this an issue that's recognized by Apple to log an official complaint or should I just send off a letter to the sjobs address?

Can't believe they fixed so many things and the sound that drove me NUTS is back. What causes this anyway? Must be something to do with the logic board because my old one was completely silent!

OPSEC ftw! =)

Amen brother. Too easy to forget that the bad boys are pretty good with technology / internet / forum postings in this day and age ...

I spent an hour with Applecare this morning. It went well. Tier 1 immediately transferred me to Tier 2. Valerie (2) didn't know what to do at all. She did know about the 2006 whining issue. I firmly but politely explained to them that this saga was first logged in April when I was in KWI, it went in two weeks ago and came back with almost every major part changed. I was scheduled to leave next week and would like a replacement.

She was sympathetic. Seems like everyone who reads the repair notes is shocked at the amount of things they replaced. She also said that it would take 7 days to be fixed and about the same for a replacement because it was a BTO ( this part I don't get - the old one was a BTO why not give me a stock new one?)

All very polite, helpful and sympathetic. Without even me asking Valerie brings on a guy from Customer Relations. I've heard these are the superheroes who can snap a finger and fix issues. He didn't turn down a replacement but did say I need to go in to an Apple store immediately for them to double check the problems. Once they do that, he would talk to me on the phone tomorrow and come up with an acceptable solution.

These CR fellas can pull some strings. Every Apple store in a 20 mile radius was booked and had no appointments till Friday. He said he'd call back in an hour and magically had me break the line at my neighborhood store and I'm going in this evening.

Valerie and CR proposed that they could ship it to a family member once fixed and they can send it on to me. This time my initial experience in Kuwait and the whining played in my favor. I said that I would have to test the machine before accepting it and being stuck in KWI. If it was new, I would be willing to take the risk.

I'm pretty sure they'll replace it. Maybe I am just one over analytical SOB but its made my problem/decision come back. :) :) :)

If my favorite machine is being exchanged with a new one, I need to think about whether I will ever use the hard core features of the new MBP17s. All I like is the screen size and resolution, I don't edit movies or work with RAW images.

Back to the million dollar question - do I go ahead and buy the MBP13 as my 'main' machine for now. Get used to the small screen. Sell the new MBP 17 and keep the cash for a desktop in the future. I would have no sentimental attachment to the new 17" that's for sure. I can always buy a used 2006 MBP down the road if I want to ....

What say? Keep the new 17" and forget about the little guy or get junior, go through the PITA of selling a NIB MBP and make do for a while ...

I figure the new one would be 2499 retail, plus tax. I'll advertise it for 2299 all inclusive. Buyer saves 440 bucks and can resell on ebay if needed. I don't have the time to f with it.

Lucky!!! lol

You should probably call them, or deal with it. Maybe you can schedule it to get fixed when you get back?

Apple customer relations will be replacing my machine with a new 17" MBP. Stock configuration with an upgraded HD (7200 RPM).

I'm quite pleased. Now will decide if I keep it or sell it and get the little one.

Took a long time but the outcome is pretty neat. I think I wasted WAY too much time researching the new machines, pros and cons, cases to buy for the MBP junior etc. I'm probably going to end up keeping the 17". It was nagging at me that every tom, dick and harry new Apple user/student was buying the 13" MB "Pro".

Sounds elitist but I do like the exclusivity.

Cheers,

wow arent you lucky, i hope in 2 years something goes wrong with my macbook pro , so i will get a brand new one 2 :D

Well, if you are getting a new MacBook Pro, you should be happy because you get a SD Card slot, which us iMac, Mac Pro and Mac Mini users don't have built-in. Also, you get a uni-body MBP which I've heard is better, plus your computer will be faster.

Also, think of it like this, you have a standard iMac 20" with nothing upgraded, and suddenly something happens and you get an iMac 24" tricked out with the best options or if you're lucky a 8 core Mac Pro with 30" Cinema Display ! ( This 2nd mini paragraph includes what I want :D

You can always send it in to have the display replaced and have it shipped to where you are going.

I had a similar thing happen with a white macbook. I dropped it off for warranty work on case. I picked it up a week later, discovered that the logic board was replaced and they had scratched the display. I mentioned it to the store manager and demanded the screen be repaired. It was sent off again, the depot replaced the display, but did so with a faulty display. The store manager offered a replacement! I ended up with a new unibody macbook, still sealed in the box.

Hope things work out as well for you. I would say something to the store manager.

EDIT: I just read that they gave you a replacement. Win for you!

I wasted 2 months trying to deal with Applecare. Trust me, I'd rather have had a working machine from the beginning and saved myself some mental gymnastics. I really just want a working machine, new or old.

But, I can't lie - it's very cool to get a brand new machine for 'free'. Free in quotes because I spent 3 grand to begin with and another 300 on Applecare. They better honor the warranty.

I'm looking forward to getting the new machine. I think I was trying to justify the 13" MBP but my first love is always the 17" 'big' laptops. I'm going to keep it instead of trying to sell and then buy the 13". I won't be happy with the little one after 3 years of a 17"
