Your knife analogy would be after years of making knives with handles the company suddenly puts a blade coming out the top of the handle.

Unfortunately, with small cell phones, that's exactly what FCC and/or other federal regulations demanded.

The old StarTAC flip phone had a nice external antenna aerial whip that stuck up radiating RF right next to your temple. You can't make cell phones like than anymore.

Apple isn't going to reveal any details about a software fix, if one is even forthcoming, until it's ready for release.

Apple hasn't stopped being Apple. This shouldn't be a shock to anyone's senses.

That's ********. If I was a CEO facing massive returns and upset longtime loyal customers, I would announce that we are aware of the problem and currently working on a fix. That's the problem......there is no fix so I assume they feel the only way to salvage the situation and a major recall is deny any issues. I wonder how many lawsuits we'll see from this. Maybe not from people who previously owned an iPhone and just return the device, but from people who switched carriers or paid an upgrade fee to get the iPhone 4. I'm certain anyone who had to pay more than the $199/$299 contract costs will want their money back. This is an absolute embarrassment for Apple and has ruined my view of them as THE Tech company with the best customer service! I'm just shocked at this response!

The Star Trek communicator design from the 1960's best addresses this issue. Maybe the next iPhone will do that.

I don't care what people say, I am still buying my iPhone 4th generation.

Ridiculous

Just to let you know I have created an account so I can sound off on this issue. When I first got my phone (queueing on launch day) I thought my network provider (Orange in the UK) must be having problems with ity's network. It was only later that night when I first saw the 'death grip' reports that I put 2 and 2 together and confirmed the issue on my phone. I am right-handed and therefore I was cupping the phone in my left hand whilst looking at the screen (surely this is normal). 100% reproduceable if touching either side of metal band. This means any time I use the screen in portrait I cannot receive calls. Calls drop (holding phone in right hand) as little finger sometimes hits the band. Even when using the thing landscape you are treading a fine line between hitting the band or blocking the speaker, thus potentially not being able to receive calls. Basically rubbish. In the UK at least now requiring a bumper to work would seem to qualify as a misleading omission, ie entitlement to a refund. However, I have an incident number with apple and will give them a couple of days to sort this out or at least promise to - their advisor was apologetic to me on the phone on Friday. However all the official noises and now this; apple comes across as a bunch of shysters.

Yeah, but it doesnt work.

Except in all the cases where it does, as evidenced by numerous reviews and anecdotes of people reporting improved reception and call quality. It's simple, don't touch that part of the phone. It's easy to avoid.

I don't have the reception issue. Although, I can make the signal drop a bar or two while giving it the "death grip", and even going down to no signal in a poor reception area. It's a CELL PHONE, not a LAND LINE PHONE. It will have reception issues which depend on a multitude of factors. I'm sick of hearing about this issue.
Time for quake live.

This is exactly what the supervisor I am working for told me word for word. Why is this a "leak"?

This is what they are telling people.

Kind of odd that Apple never had an Apple branded case for the iPhone, 3G, 3GS but they were ready with one for the release of iPhone 4. Coincidence? I don't think so. I believe they knew this would be an issue before they released the phone.

I get it now. You know when you are talking with someone for a really long time and you want to get off the phone, but not be rude? You would then start making noisy sounds from your mouth in a way that made it seem like you were losing reception. Well say goodbye to that. Simply by using this new feature, you will genuinely cut reception, causing the call to drop without having to make your own silly sounds. Brilliant!

rofl I LIKE! Nice solution Venusian

This make me laugh. All these people sticking up for apple are delusional. What apple are saying is that. We have produced this unbelievable television that you can watch Feature length movies on. But you have to stand up and watch it because if you get comfortable on the sofa it will turn off. LAUGHABLE

But no doubt there will be some kissers here who bend over and say mr jobs please be gentle when you violate my anus. Oh thank you mr jobs thank you.

How can people that clearly have some brain power ( They must have to have jobs to support there apple addiction) be brainwashed.

Apple are wrong here. It's about time they took some responsibility. For once

Haha, this is how much Apple cares about its loyal flock of fans. This is not surprising, though. Why should Apple try to fix anything, as long as hordes of sheep keep buying their stuff even if it's seriously flawed?

Oh god, i cant believe it. I have owned an iphone from the very beginning. I noticed this problem within minutes of taking it out of the box, it isnt just holding it to make a call, it is holding it to browse. The phone is fundamentally flawed in its design, and thats why its going back tomorrow.

Shame, i love it for everything else...

So you'd rather lose all those feature than buy a bumper for your i4?

Strange...

Looks like I actually got my call in early enough to get the free bumper we all should be getting. Apple could clearly do the 'right' thing and acknowledge something is amiss, which I take my free bumper to mean, and make a good PR move by offering one to every customer. This seriously would have to cost them very little for the amount of negative flack they're going to continuously get, I feel.

Instead, they're gonna ride on the popularity in the hopes that this eventually dies down. It's truly a sad fact but after seeing the responses from Steve, people under him aren't going to challenge his response. Someone in that company needs to sit his ass down and tell him what he's doing is not right. No one will ever do this sadly...

Except the branded case they released for the iPad (which has no reported issues) and the iPod socks. Apple has done this before.

Luckily Right/Left handedness is not one of the government protected clauses...

Class action lawsuits are about companies willfully and knowingly selling a product that has a design flaw causing it to malfunction to the point of failure, then refusing to acknowledge or offer a solution to the problem. I'm guessing you think that's an acceptable practice.

I see your point.

I think you will find that there is a higher % of right handed people using their left hands to hold their phones. Humans tend to free up their dominant hands while holding peripherals.

I suppose because some of us aren't having the issue? Or we've decided that the issue isn't major enough to send our entire lives into upheaval as we switch carriers/phones/ecosystems that we've invested three years' time into?

I'm in the same boat......I've had all three iPhones, plus an iMac, AppleTV, Time Capsule, Macbook Pro, iPad, iPod, etc.......When I'm home and have WIFI on, the bars fluctuate up and down while the WIFI signal does the same thing. It's an utter disappointment. I love everything else about the phone, but to have this blatant of a flaw is just inexcusable! I've also lost all respect for Mr. Jobs. To reply back to concerned customers with smartass answers like "you're holding it wrong" and "there is no reception issues" is absurd! We're not holding it right Steve? Well every f#*king person on your website demos aren't holding them right either! I wish I could shove this phone up his a*#! Maybe it would get better reception then?

Never thought of it like that! ;) Just so happens that the bumper also covers the one area where all the issues are - ie. the attenna!

Now i'm sounding real cynical! I'll give Apple the benefit of the doubt though - i still don't think they had any clue about the "issue" before launch!
