Oddly enough, I don't recall the Xbox 360 fiasco making the front page news of every tech site on the planet like the "holding your iPhone a certain way" issue is.

Interesting.

Apparently Apple is held to a higher standard, by both its customers and the press. Fair enough I suppose.
Your point is a good one, but just google "red ring of death." MS got a fair share of heat over that one.

But I'm on the "if you don't like it, return it and don't use it" bandwagon. People feel such a sense of entitlement. Mini doesn't make a car that I'm comfortable in. I didn't buy a Cooper and sue BMW.

No! I want to hold the phone exactly like this and I refuse to do any differently! How dare they tell me how to hold the phone even if it isn't that hard to hold it in a way that doesn't interfere with its operation.
Are you on drugs? Holding the phone is the center of gravity of the phone in the center of your grip. For those who aren't princesses or have tiny doll hands that means the 'kill zone' is firmly in the meat at the base of your thumb. It was a stupid design! Your knife analogy would be after years of making knives with handles the company suddenly puts a blade coming out the top of the handle. Both  and the knife company screwed up.

If it is hardware issue (might be software though, if related to the new algorithm for searching least loaded band), then it will be fixed in iP7. So Apple you won't see my money until then. If your answer be more polite and free bumper i could buy it anyway. I love vote with my wallet, then FAIL Apple, FAIL so far.

Just picking out one of the first comments...
Because there IS NO SOFTWARE FIX as there IS NO ISSUE.

A more elegant way of putting that:

There is no software fix, so there can't be an issue.

who gives "positive" to this??

Those of us who think it's comical at best. In everything there is a lesson to be learned, and thus the world in theory grows stronger. It's a good thing no? There are multiples to be learned here, about not believing everything you read, and not expecting commercial for-profit businesses to behave as something different...

Someone else may have said this, I think they should issue a fix - essentially causing the device to electrically shock the user who bridges the gap between the two pieces of metal. --- All new iTaser!

ugh

+1 in class action lawsuit

sure lets sue so all the members get nothing more or less, attorneys make millions, Apple is out millions, the court system is tied up for something idiotic, and in the mean time you didn't practice the requirement of lessening your damages (i.e. returning it and requesting a full refund)....thats such a wonderful outcome for the attorneys, but has taken millions away from possible R&D etc.....such a great idea.....god i hate idiots and "ambulance chasers" this is the reason we should have a total wipe of so much crap in the legal system & elsewhere....a cleansing to rid us of ignorance, wasting, and selfishness where we would finally be on a path of progress and bettering ourselves

Droid X I Guess!!!

As much as I love my iPhone 4, and any Apple product for that matter, I just can not deal with this issue as I have dropped several calls since I've had it on the 23rd. I can't hold the phone with two hands while in landscape mode either as the signal completely drops.

I think I will hold on to the phone until July 15th, at which point if there isn't a fix I will return the phone, cancel the contract extension, and head off into the world of Android phones on Verizon. That will be a sad, sad day.

just spoke with level 2 apple care and they gave me the exact bs...

the guy even went as far as saying that it was by design that the reception stops when the lower left corner is touched. I had to have him repeat that cuz i was like wtf are you joking?

I get it now. You know when you are talking with someone for a really long time and you want to get off the phone, but not be rude? You would then start making noisy sounds from your mouth in a way that made it seem like you were losing reception. Well say goodbye to that. Simply by using this new feature, you will genuinely cut reception, causing the call to drop without having to make your own silly sounds. Brilliant!

It isnt the law of physics that's responsible for the iphone 4 failing to make and receive call when held in the same position as the 3g, its bad design.

Actually, it's a pretty intelligent design. You separate the antennas instead of coupling the outputs. Basic RF knowledge.

Didn't you see the whole antenna stuff coming? If not - come on, what were you doing in physics class?

And BY THE effing WAY. When I put my finger on to the Apple logo on the back during the call (2G iPhone) I too experience some call problems, even though never had a drop as far as I recall.

Actually Apples are right - in certain circumstances (iPhone 2G in my case, 4 obviously and some other phones) the signal could be jammed by your body. They're just not saying "We screwed up". And they probably won't. The best you'll hear is a joke from Steve at the next WWDC about it, carefully admitting the problem as he introduces the next iPhone 5 without this antenna. Or...

...or software update 4.0.1 fixes it, though I see no way they could to do that. Sorry for pessimism.

I'm done.

Here's another:

http://www.antennasys.com/antennasys-blog/2010/6/24/apple-iphone-4-antennas.html

I'm not defending Apple's choice to put an exposed antenna on the bottom - just saying that the bottom is where it's required to be, unfortunately. Just another design constraint Apple has to work around.
Thanks for the article.

However, I don't see where the FCC requires the antenna to be located at the bottom of the cell phone. What I do see is that under the current testing methodology to get the best results a manufacturer will need to place the antenna at the bottom of their cell phone(s). Semantics. Sure. But the point is that currently, no law or regulation exists that specifically requires the antenna to be located at the bottom of a cell phone.

And of course manufacturers like Apple will do their best under the current testing methodology. So hence we have antennas at the bottom of cell phones. :)

I'd argue that willfully releasing a defective product and hoping to get away with it is completely out of character for Apple.

See i'm not sure Apple "willfully" released it knowing there was an issue. All the "prototype"/test devices (like the one in the bar) had a case which made it look like a 3GS. And testing attenuation (either internally at Apple or at the FCC) wouldn't have taken into consideration users holding the iPhone - we know Apple bolt down their early designs and the FCC doesn't conduct their tests whilst holding the device. I'm convinced Apple weren't aware of the "issue" (i know there is some debate as to whether there is an issue ;)

Not sure what's going to happen but I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone 5 doesn't have the same external antenna as the iPhone 4!

It isnt the law of physics that's responsible for the iphone 4 failing to make and receive call when held in the same position as the 3g, its bad design.

No, it's people with bad habits. You were probably blocking the antenna on your 3G and then blaming AT&T for a weak signal instead of learning to properly deal with the laws of physics (and cell phone safety, SAR exposure, etc.)

I bought a case...case closed. yeah, its a flaw somewhere, but i was planning on putting it in an otterbox case anyway. So for now until the otterbox comes out, i have my shiny new iphone 4 in a griffin case.. no sweat off my back. and strangly, no dropped signal either.. now im off to the rest of my life :D

If Apple doesn't fix this before my 30 day return period runs out I'll probably return mine. Holding it in such an awkward way it growing very tiresome, and luckily I decided not to go and sell my 3GS.

Yes, you can return it. Please do it.

You can also then buy a new phone, move to a new carrier, migrate all your data and music.

Another option is to not touch that little black line when you are in an area with low signal.

Your call

what a constructive post, and since you felt it necessary you quoted my entire post making that "wall of text" reappear again and then provide us with an image that also occupies virtually the same amount of horizontal space...good work! :p

Now you too can learn the power of the paragraph!

Class action lawsuits are about companies willfully and knowingly selling a product that has a design flaw causing it to malfunction to the point of failure, then refusing to acknowledge or offer a solution to the problem. I'm guessing you think that's an acceptable practice.

If you are waiting for a software fix foran antenna, you will be waiting a long time.

I suspect it will be released right after the firmware update that makes the screen larger or or the update that removes scratches from the glass.

An antenna is a physical device and if you cover it, the cover blocks the signal.

Jeez Chris, you don't know a lot about RF do you!

Oh god, i cant believe it. I have owned an iphone from the very beginning. I noticed this problem within minutes of taking it out of the box, it isnt just holding it to make a call, it is holding it to browse. The phone is fundamentally flawed in its design, and thats why its going back tomorrow.

Shame, i love it for everything else...
