Well yes I am older thsn you having programmed on ARPNET and PLATO. And yes I have had a broken neck with nerve damage in my left hand. So no I'm not going to hold a $600 phone other than in a firm grip with it's center of gravity in the center of the grip...

Fortunately every other phone I've ever owned had absolutely no problem with that, that is until last Thursday.

So old people or any one who can't hold their phone like a princess just shouldn't get an iPhone anymore?

For use of any expensive electronic device with nerve damaged hands, I suggest a large, non-slip, very well padded, case.

One of the reasons I purchased a bumper is that I can be clumsy with glass objects.

humorously ironic that apple's insistence on having a veil of secrecy around their new products with design and testing got them into this...

and it's also ironic that iphone 4's launch success pretty much rules out any hardware design fixes (1.6 million sold in 3 days... with an untold # in production...good luck)

kind of reminds me of icarus and that 'thing' with toyota's brake pedals. (something about being weary of too much success)

hoping apple learns from this... glad i'm sticking with my 3gs a little while longer. and peeps with the iphone 4 should really stop whining and just get the iphone case. i mean, how many folks out there really were planning on carrying that pretty phone naked, au natural ?

and yeh, if no software fix is available, the least 'painful' thing is for apple to simply include a complimentary case with each new iphone.

+1 :apple:

My signal will go down if I hold the lower left corner, however; with that being said I am experiencing an overall increase in cell signal and 3g speeds with the ip4 over the 3gs. Take that however you will....

BTW: My Griffin reveal does not help the signal issue. I have yet to drop a call or lose my signal completely despite holding the left corner, so I don't know how to feel about it.

I had the same issue and WITH the bumper on! In some locations not a problem. Yet in one location with 4 bars on signal I sat and held the bottom corner as I usually do when making a call, the signal went down to almost nothing within about a minute.

That's now got me really worried. I thought electrical tape would fix the issue but it didn't help at all.

There is more whining here than on the World of Warcraft message boards. Sadly I don't play anymore...really..I swear.

But why not say there is a software fix? What's wrong with saying they are aware of the problem and intend to fix it with a software update? That's already what they told Walt Mossberg of the WSJ.

Simple answer here. Because there won't be a software fix. They told Mossberg whatever they had to in hopes he wouldn't complain too much about it in the review.

Moving On...

Not an unexpected response...

Users of Apple products have the right to feel anoyed at Apple for not disclosing either the requirement to ensure the ip4 is held in such a way that atenuation does not occur. They also have a right to be annoyed that the solution to the issue is to spend additional $ to purchase a bumper or case to ensure they don't have to worry about atenuation.

That said, anoyed or not, they have the power to vote with their wallets and return the phone for a refund; or start a class action.

For me personally after reviewing the design of the phone - glass case, edging etc and the atenuation issues, I will purchase the phone with a bumper or an equivalent case.

Am I disappointed that Apple didn't advise of the issue earlier and apparently that Steve elected to put his typing fingers in gear before his brain with his initial response - certainly. Apples moral compass does indeed seem to be a little skewed here - If Google (and other mobile phone vendors) can do it with the Nexus One then so can we!

If the bumper doesn't resolve the issues (unlikely it appears) I will return the phone and request a refund....

Why would I need one on this phone when I never did with the 3GS? Rubber cases make phones almost impossible to get into pockets reliably, particularly with nerve damaged hands.

Again I should be able to hold this like every other cell on the planet and have it work. And the next model you bet I'll be able to.

This is hilarious.. I called the Apple Store on Michigan Ave. and asked the operator when they will fix the reception issue. He said there is no issue. haha... I'd love to bit$#-slap him.

WOW..props to Spirtlevel on page #17...

that sure is alot of pictures of Mr Jobs 'holding it wrong'

um, i don't think you understand the significance of that joke. however, it does apply to apple's response to the situation at hand. if i went to my doctor and said, "doctor, my foot hurts every time i take a step," and the doctor replied, "well, maybe you should walk differently," i would sure as hell go to a different doctor.

Interesting, because I did have a foot problem, it hurt, was referred by my doctor to a podiatrist (one who works with a Pac-10 University track team) and physical therapist; and they did recommend that I use some orthotics to change my foot position, and change my running stride, to speed my recovery and reduce the possibility of re-injury.

Haven't had the same problem since.

If I'd went to a lawyer instead, I would have sued Nike and Adidas, and still been limping.

Very content that I did not jump ship to get on the iP4 bandwagon even though AT&T offered me the chance to jump ship from my 3GS. Best wishes to the beta-testers. Hmm... Rev.B in June '11?

I do not think anyone should be telling people to hold their phones period. Each person is different and would hold the device a little different. It is a blunder on Apples side and most fanboys fail to see it.

And telling people what they shouldn't be telling people is ok, though? LOL
We are all quite, quite mad. Barking. w00t!! It's not a cell phone so much as it is an insanity delivery system.

You don't have to "hold different" if you have a decent signal. Many places have a signal 100's to 1000's of times stronger than needed for an indicated 5 bars.

It's only if you barely have 5 bars, or less, that you might need to hold the phone properly for the RF conditions.

Or use a bumper.

But how will I know whether I have a "strong" 5 bars or a "weak" 5 bars until my call drops out?

Never had to worry about adjusting my hold according to the relevant RF conditions before...

It's not very "it just works" is it?

You can sit here making defensive posts all day long, but we all know (including you I have no doubt) that this phone has a very basic and major design flaw.

i had the whole conversation recorded too and when i said hey can you say that again ... you just said it's by design that the phone completely stops transmitting data/voice when the black bar is touched..

he got all panicky and start saying hey you need to talk to our legal department.. let me transfer you.. you better not record this.. and that conversations between apple care and customers are property of apple..
If there are two parties in the conversation how can only one of them claim to "own" it?

lol omg.. let me know if anyone wants the phone recording.. terrible attitude by the way.. no apologies or acknowledgement of problem.. kept telling me that i need to hold it differently and not touch the black bar..
Post it on some overseas site and put the link here. Looking forward to that...

Is Steve Jobs a normal person? Because he's holding it wrong...

As are these people in Apple's own marketing materials...

hey-apple-youre-holding-it-wrong.jpg

Thank you spiritlevel!

This is a hardware issue, not software. They should have just put the seam at the top of the unit.

With nearly 500 posts, someone probably already mentioned this, but just in case...

Apple had no choice. The FCC forces mobile phone manufacturers to place the cellular antenna as far from facial contact as possible. For sleek smartphones that means just one place: at the bottom of the phone.

A non-conductive coating on the piece might have helped a little....

Anybody notice their signal strength improving today???

Maybe the ATT network was temporarily weakened

No. You're assuming they didn't know about this issue. You're assuming that the designers and engineers who spent thousands and thousands of man hours working on this phone overlooked something that any idiot in the street notices after holding it for 10 seconds.

They knew. It's by design.

What got them into this mess is their obsession with making every product thinner than the last. The thing that necessitated this radically different antenna design was that they simply couldn't fit the antennas inside the case, now that there's a secondary camera and a much larger battery.

It wasn't insufficient testing that got them into this mess, it was opting for a radical antenna design that had no track record on the market. They do this all the time, and it's usually hit and miss. When they design mice, it's mostly miss. When they designed the Cube (yay, we made a fanless computer), it was a mega miss. When they did the unibody MBPs, it was a hit. When they made the Titanium PowerBook, it was a miss (broken hinges was a widespread problem). As long as they have this "to boldly go where no man...." approach, customers will always be beta hardware testers.

Then get a plastic case, or whatever you can grip reliably. Glass can be pretty slippery when hands get sweaty.

It does look nice though.

Apple appear to have become very arrogant.

With so many experiencing this issue, I still want to know why I cant re-create it with the iPhone 4 and 3GS. I tried again this evening.

I cant believe some of the new iPhone 4's have been manufactured differently.

Was the baseband not updated to use the most "reliable" signal and not the strongest available in iOS 4?

Clearly, the exposed antenna will lose some reception... but this update will only be more evident if the baseband is not using the strongest signal available and is not switching correctly. If you couple that with a relatively weak signal....

I can grip the phone itself reliably, it just doest work when I do.
