Well, Apple Care would have still cost £189 which is mandatory for me, so a small uplift to give me peace of mind for theft and damage for 2 years is worth it.

I live in the UK where people won't think twice about stabbing me in the neck if I struggle to stop a gang or person stealing my phone. They can take the damn thing and I get a replacement at the end of the day.
The trick is not to get involved in group fights and give up your belongings in the very rare event you do get 'stabbed in the neck'.

FFS your argument is absolutely ******* insane. I haven't bought AppleCare in years. Not worth the money. If you want peace of mind then set aside some money every month. Theft and damage is covered with your home contents insurance. I'm not sure what you're smoking but can I have some?

As some have pointed out above, making any kind of claim on your household insurance can have bad financial consequences, unfortunately. Not a bad idea to set some money aside each month for peace of mind.

Apple's hoping people don't read their home owners / renters insurance policy or credit card coverage, and then play on buyers fears of having to shell out another $1,000 for a new iPhone

Wouldn't a home owners policy only cover the phone if it was damaged at home? And that is usually only standard with damage by fire, storms, etc and probably theft out of the house as well, of course subject to whatever financial limit is in the policy. But I didn't think it would cover theft or damage outside of the home, or damage that was your fault such as if you dropped it. I have an extra policy just for my nice watches, my wife's wedding ring, etc that covers us for loss, theft, damage etc if we are outside the home, traveling, etc.

I'm also always wary of filing a "small" claim with my homeowners as sometimes that may raise your rates or if you have enough of them get you kicked off that company. I think I'd rather rely on the credit card insurance, but if you do a monthly payment plan through Apple or a carrier then you don't have the credit card protection.

My home insurance doesn’t cover me for theft of my phone outside of my house. Only in a burglary. I have to pay separately for each item to have it covered outside of my house.

I don’t think there is any trick to it. Muggers pick someone who they think will be an easy target and then make threats of violence to get you to give up your valuable items/cash. It’s not a case of getting involved in fights. The group targets you. As the poster said the best thing to do is to give them whatever they are asking for otherwise you are looking at a very bad beating at the very least and getting stabbed is also very possible. Also at the end of all of that they will still take your things.

Who in their right mind would spend that much on this? Standard home contents insurance would cover this.
Which home contents inurance covers loss and theft of my phone? I mean yeah if someone breaks into my house and steals my phone there, they would cover it but if I lose if or it gets stolen while I'm not at home, I'm out of luck, am I not?

I'd say very few iPhones get stolen while they are at home.

I do agree this seems to expensive though. 219£ for 2 years and then another 109£ when I actually need it? Maybe it's just me but my phones get lost/stolen/damaged too rarely to make this worth it.

This - I wouldn't want to claim under home insurance only to have to declare a claim for the next 5 years and deal with higher premiums.

Checked with Natwest and it was £10 a month for single phone cover (the other benefits I would never use!).

I always tend to buy Applecare+ with iPhones and Mac's. I'll be honest - I've used it with a MacBook before (logic board replacement!) but have never used it with any iPhone - but I know the time I miss it is the time I will have needed it!! So for me its more piece of mind that I'm covered under all scenarios.

My niece had her phone stolen from her bag just a few months ago in a London Underground station. She's very careful with her items, but got on a packed train and next thing she knew it was gone. She panicked, went to teh closest Apple Store and had to buy another iPhone 12 as she had no insurance!!

You never think it could happen to you......until it does.....

Not only that - you could be using your phone and some ******'s go past on a moped/scooter and snatch it straight out of your hand!!!!! Before you know it, they're gone!!

Same happened to me in 2012. Had my iPhone stolen on the underground. I also didn’t have insurance. I learned my lesson the hard way.

As others above have mentioned, claiming on my house insurance would be a terrible idea and cause my premiums to raise significantly. House contents insurance is often a con anyway. When you read the small print they don't often cover the full value of anything. It's often capped at a certain amount for phone, laptops etc.

Apple Care is essential to me at £189. The fact that it now covers theft is a no-brainer at £239.

Don't Nationwide bank offer mobile cover as well as travel and breakdown cover for £13 which is only £1 more than apple and youre getting travel and breakdown.
I think bank mobile insurance gives you more for your money.

Coming to this thread a bit late (and may have missed this in my read-through), but does anyone know if the new AppleCare+ optional extra for Theft & Loss would enable the following:

• On holiday in a country with easy access to Apple retail stores
• iPhone taken with me on holiday, but gets lost or stolen
• Need an iPhone for remainder of holiday (either for being connected, or for photography)
• Walk into an Apple retail store, explain I have AppleCare+ with Theft + Loss
• Apple retail store provides a replacement iPhone on the spot

Or is it more like you'd be able to contact Apple and claim, but they would have to ship the replacement device to your registered home address (while you're still on holiday)?
