I just bought AppleCare+ this morning.
Just called Apple and they sold it to me over the phone.
No questions asked.
Ordered mine 11/1, got it 11/7.

Nope, I talked to the apple store people and it is confirmed that only those who pre-ordered on the 7th of october gets till nov. 14. Otherwise if you purchased your iphone today and didn't get applecare+ you won't get it for good. I'm sorry to say but what I have said is true.

The Apple employees don't seem to know what Applecare+ is. I just got an iPhone 4S and the guy said that they will give you two "screen replacements" per year for free and didn't seem to know about the $49 charge for replacements... Kind of weird if you ask me.

I haven't seen anyone else mention this but here is something else to consider.

Apple offers OOW (out of warranty) replacement of the iPhone 4S for $199 (plus 'ERS fee' of $29)

http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=iphone
(go to 'Express Replacement Service' then click on 'My iPhone is not under warranty...')

This covers accidental damage as long as the iPhone doesn't get physically broken into multiple pieces.

If you figure $99 for a service you may never use which also will add $49 to use it for a replacement total of $148, vs $228 for a replacement only if actually needed, Applecare+ doesn't seem like as much of a no-brainer. Not saying it's a bad deal, especially if you think you may break your phone TWICE, but I thought this was worth pointing out.

When the guy working at the Apple Store was trying to sell me on AppleCare+ he was telling me the phone would cost $850 to replace if I broke it. I don't think he was intentionally trying to mislead me, I think he just didn't know any better, but needless to say I am glad I didn't buy the coverage, personally.

Great point. I was going to say this too. To me, the risk is worth just waiting to see if I need a replacement and then paying the same plus $50 (non-express). When you consider the iPhone could fail on its own, which would be covered, or you could loose it, which wouldn't be covered, I don't think this coverage is adding that much value.

I have however, chosen AT&T's mobile insurance for $7/ mo, which does cover loss/theft with a $199 deductible regardless of model. The $7 won't be noticed and if I loose the phone, an $850 plus tax bill won't hit me in the head. YMMV...

Is it worth it for the iphone4s? What is the cost and conditions? Any limitations? I don't normally get insurance for things but it sounds like it may be worth it if it covers accidents? Your thoughts, thanks.

Depends on how you handle phones, etc. Personally I don't think so.. but it's really up to you.

Pity AppleCare+ is not available in the UK. Bad :apple:!

Not available here in New Zealand either. Why does apple screw some markets over while coddling the others? surely a $ is a $. I purchased applecare protection when I ordered my phone, it cost me $132 NZ/$102.50 US. There's no "if you do something stupid with your phone we'll give you a new one" built into that.

Sometimes I wish that I could go back to the naive days of believing Apple was all about looking after the consumer, now I realise it's just all about looking after the consumer in favored markets

Apple warranty covers your iPhone for 1 year for hardware issues like a loose power button as an example. If you don't have Apple Care + you won't be extended beyond the 1 year warranty for a loose power button as an example.

What happens in let's say 14 months from now when you notice a mushy home button and/ or a home button that's not responding. You won't be able to get a replacement because you're not covered.

When it comes down to it, you're just betting against yourself. I plan on purchasing the warranty today, only because I feel the extended vanilla warranty (I. E. Battery) + accident protection x2 is worth taking the bet on.

Yea I completely agree. I just feel more secure :).

Is it possible to still purchase regular AppleCare? I'm not going to break my phone, so I don't need insurance, but considering the little issues we've had with our iPhones, I'd like the extended warranty on my wife's iPhone 4 since she plans to keep it for another year. I get a new one every year, so dont need extended warranty.

From what I heard Apple is going to get more strict about the $199 out of warranty replacement. The OOW replacement from what I understand is if the iPhone breaks for WARRANTY reasons, but the phone is out of warranty. I don't want to gamble that they get more strict on this - and it's no guarantee they won't. So it's worth the cost for me.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A404 Safari/7534.48.3)

Let's say my screen breaks... With apple care + will the y give you a brand new iPhone or just a refurbished one?

Couple other points as food for thought. Apologies if already mentioned, I skimmed the thread and didn't see them. Both are in the T&C.
  • AppleCare+ is transferable
  • You can get a pro-rated refund for the unused portion less 10%
Thus having AC+ should result in higher resale value, albeit perhaps not as much as the refund amount. Would depend on how long you had the phone before reselling.

Also, if you're unsure whether Apple will continue the liberal OOW replacement policy or crack down on accidental damage replacements, you could get AC+ now and wait three or four months to see what they do for people without AC+ - out of pocket cost would be ~$25 for that four months period.

Right as I said Apple Care + now covers accidental damage such as a cracked screen @ $49 deductible.

But also Apple Care + covers non accidental hardware issue without a deductible such as a mushy home bottom. A mushy home bottom doesn't fall under the '2 accidental instances/$49 deductible'. So in case of a mushy home button you'll get a replacement with no deductible and doesn't count against accidental coverage.

If you got a good case (defender, lifeproof, survivor) and you've never really broken a phone I would just get att or equivelant insurance for the theft/loss coverage. With ac+ you are already committing $100 up front. So I don't know.
