I don’t know if any but I just got a 108 GaN and it’s half the size of the 96 watt standard. There no reason a 140 gan should be bigger then the 96 if the 108 gan I have is half the size of the apple 96. The size it is now is what I'd like expect it to be without Gan

I’m using the 108 right now as well, so I get the reference in size.

But you need more room for more power. You also need more room for heat dissipation. You don’t get 40% more power from something that’s just slightly larger.

Return of an underwhelming HDMI 2.0 port*

we need to be calling out this crap guys
I assume it’s just for connecting to a projector or perhaps some crappy monitor at a client site. For the kind of pro applications they intend, they want you to use thunderbolt to a real display.

I did not think that you can use multiple USB-C ports to do "additive power" to charge a laptop?
What? No, thats not what i suggested.

I was saying I don't want to have to plug in Apple's power adapter if I'm connected to a dock, in order to power the laptop. I have no idea what the dock does if the laptop is getting power, but power isn't why I use a dock.

What I'm saying is Apple hasn't said how much power this machine actually needs, vs here is a 140W powerbrick that can fast-charge in 30 minutes. Clearly its overspec'd for normal operation, but by how much?

I just want to use my $400 dock without throwing it out because Apple increased power requirements, but I also don't want to have to plug two cables into my notebook to "dock" because that is stupid and defeats the purpose.

So back to my question, how much power does a M1 Max + 16" screen use at full load? Is it 87W or less? Does anyone know where to find that spec?

I’m disappointed that they didn’t put PD 3.1 on the thunderbolt ports as well. I’m all in on Type C, and MagSafe would merely be another thing for me to carry.

I assume 2022 will be year of PD 3.1 and BT 5.2 (never mind that 5.3 has been released)

We don’t know if the ports are PD 3.1 or not yet. We do know there are not EPR-rated cables available today but the brick is PD 3.1.

Would not be surprised if it’s already 3.1 waiting for appropriate spec cables.

A charger of this level with only one USB-C port is a joke.
It is Apple’s charger specifically for the MacBook Pro 16. They have no reason to add another port, and they would also then have to deal with support calls when people plug in a second device and fast charging stops working.

I'm fully aware of how the HyperJuice functions from that standpoint. I would also add - this is true for any reasonably sized multi-port charging brick.

Admittedly I've not dug into GaN as deep as others may have - but my understanding is that it should be able to be smaller, because of significantly less number of components, therefore also less heat generation. I suppose 1.4x by volume is reasonable - but this 140W charger just looks massive. That said - I'm sure it won't cook an egg like the silicon versions feel like they could when pushing full power during charging.
you're right on the money. The 140W is full power through 1 port with low heat.

There are bunch of Chinese available GaN based (total) 650 Watt that peak at 65watts per channel. which is not available in NA or EU.

They're coming and getting smaller - the approvals for the apple charger have to meet regulations across multiple jurisdictions. I'm not convinced apple will be out front on this with that reality.

Having to buy half a dozen proprietary chargers to cover all of your bases is "not a big deal"? And no information on the price of that properietary charger that's electronic waste the second your computer dies.

I would be great if there are multiple usb-c ports on this brick. Lost potential.
I wouldn't have expected Apple to put additional ports on the brick. Any brick with multiple outputs would end up dividing the power between them. Apple wants the full 140 watts to always be directed to the MBP because it probably needs it. If the brick divided power, Apple would be getting complaints about the MBP losing power even though it's plugged in, or complaints that fast charging doesn't work. It's a brick designed to power a 16" MBP and that's it. It can power other things, but not at the same time, else the MBP charging suffers.

The detail still missing is the dimensions of the charger. Everyone is complaining about the size of a charger that “looks big”. We just don’t know.
Seriously, are you blind? The port on the side of it tells you how big it is.

Slightly taller than the 96W, slightly narrower than the 96W, and delivers more than 40% additional power thanks to GaN.

If we took the excess volume from the 96W on the right side and mapped it to the height of the 140W, this shows the marginal size difference. Again for more than 40% greater power... 140W is a very exotic power delivery spec right now. There is nothing on the market to compare it to.

Has anyone tried the Satachi 108w GaN? I was thinking of getting one for my M1 Air and to also replace all the other chargers that I have in my bag.
