All three MacBook Pro models can drop the optical disk drive so the:
  • 13" has room for a quad-core processor and discrete graphics.
  • 15" gets an ExpressCard/34 slot and more battery.
  • 17" gets an SDXC slot and more battery.

As for the 15" & 17" models, I would prefer a secondary HDD bay for larger capacity drive coupled with a super-fast SSD. A 128 GB SSD + a 1TB HDD is a marriage made in heaven. And also, have Apple Team to enable Intel Z68 Smart Response chipset to optimize the hybrid drive solution.

Ivy Bridge
No Optical Drive (I replaced the damn Superdrive in my 4-year-old MBP with an optibay for a second HDD and I never looked back!)
8GB RAM

And I'm sold! I've been waiting too long for this!

Winblows 7 is a cluttered heap of trash that optically tries to emulate OS X, and in typical MSFT fashion, fails to deliver anything close.
Really? What is missing from Win 7 and what is done badly? (Actually, can you show an article et al where the missteps are clearly delineated?)

I am thinking along these lines too, but I do not know if Apple will do this because it adds an element of complexity that needs to be hidden from the end user. For example, when installing a new app, to where is it installed? Will the end user see two hard drive options or will OS X select where to install it? Where will VMs be stored? What happens if the end user wants to install an app but the SSD is filled up because it has a low capacity (e.g., 60 GB)? Does this require a software/firmware modification for the new hardware?
IMHO, every *computer* should come OTB with 2 things few currently do: battery backup & 2 hdd.(whatever storage)

Battery backup with smarts would mean you could charge outside peak energy hours and run off the battery (increasing efficiency etc and most likely give people enough time to explicitly save should power fail

2nd hdd is purely for OTB backup via OS. Label it as such. Would be nice if it was hot-swappable. Any other backup system would be another layer of redundancy to be encouraged. Would there be problems? Sure, but a huge amount of problems would alleviated.
Personally, I would like to see such an option, so this is just thinking aloud. The complexity posed by a simple task such as installing an app raises some questions in my mind, especially if one thinks about non-technical users, such as my father, who still needs assistance installing apps with only one hard drive option.
Most programs now default to [mostly] reasonable locations on any of the OS available. Teach the uneducated that if you are confused use the defaults. Gets them through a large portion of their installations. I have a harder time getting them to look for programs that make their life [and mine] easier.

This is why Lion's version is precisely an awesome step --- long overdue. Saving should not be so complicated for anyone unless the user makes it complicated.

A high resolution screen, good battery life,6 or 8GB RAM with some nice speakers and I'm a buyer :D

I'm keen for them to bring back the third USB port on the 15" and drop the SD slot for CF.

I don't think the 15" ever had three USB ports and CF seems to be a dying standard; only really kept alive by photography. Having said that, the next model from my Sony SLR ditched CF for SDHC. It is a poor form factor - those thin long pins in the socket are too easily bent.

brb, going to hibernate for five months.

Honestly though. Merging Air & Pro = disaster. Apple will be restricting themselves to a certain form of consumer (it won't be cheap ****, nor "professional", meaning both extremes of the market will be dropped).
If anything, I see a diversification into a more portable 'pro' machine, along with a more substantial "pro-er" machine if Apple were to cut back on Mac Pro.

Not to mention the supply chain issues. Volume doesn't always equal lower cost per unit. There are time it'll go up. I sure Time Cook knows this better than any of us. It's what he was brought to Apple to do after all.

I'm guessing he has a production range he's trying to keep within for each distinct model. What with estimates of 5mil Mac's for the Quarter and what 75 maybe 80% being laptops. I think it would seem more likely to diversify on both Supply and Demand than streamline.

1. Thinner design would be sweet
2. SSD would be cool
3. I hope they would keep ethernet. I use it in my dorm room because of spotty wifi, and dont want to buy an adapter.
4. USB 3.0
5. I hope they keep an optical drive, maybe blu-ray support.

God, if it's "thin", "sweet" and "cool" count me in whether it has an optical drive or not. Do you think it will be "elegant", "delicious" , "tasty", and Oh so "sexy" too????

PC trolls just don't understand what's important to Mac users these days. Let them have their cheaper and more powerful "crappy" and "clunky" PC's. My Mac is "elegant" and that makes me feel special!!!! (just like you obviously).

If they keep the optical drive, I will be extremely disappointed with Apple.

Blu-ray, or any optical medium, is dead. Why would you have a bulky mechanical component that decreases battery life when you can do the same thing with flash drives with much faster read/write time?

Looks like HP rolled out an update to the ENVY lineup. I want to know more about the AMD Radeon HD 7470M graphics.

I am not a fan of the analog volume knob but the available display options (IPS Radiance anyone?) and backlit keyboard are drool worthy.

Umm..no thanks. Id take windows 8 reasonably priced laptop over this garbage. Tim Cook, you are the beginning of the end! Watch out for Wild Bill. I cant wait to see windows 8 own this, completely. This will be I bet 2 grand! Rip apple, 2k7-2k11

Yeah whatever-:D

A thin 17" with ... an even more flimsier screen than the one I had in 2003? Me thinks they'll have to find some magical alloy to prevent warping.

But I need one to replace my antique from that year. And my 15" from 2008 also.

Why do people *still* hope for BlueRay to appear on a Mac?! It's NEVER going to happen so let it go already.

Blu-ray, or any optical medium, is dead.

Says Apple.

I know plenty of people that still use DVDs, Blu-Rays, even -- and I hope you're sitting down -- CD ROMs.

I personally can't remember the last time I used them, but that's irrelevant.

Just because I don't drive doesn't mean cars are on their way out.

A small portion that still uses them isn't the issue, it's the large portion that doesn't or rarely uses them that's important. If say half of people use their optical drive less than 3 times a year, why should Apple include it with every single laptop? Why should it take up volume and weight that could be used for reducing the overall weight of the laptop or expanding the battery?

It's not like removing the optical drive from the laptop itself keeps you from ever using one, Apple sells an external one themselves and so do many other companies. Unless you're planning to rip music CDs on a plane I don't think an external drive will be much of a problem.

I hope you don't mind paying $89.99 for HD movies.

le sigh......

What do you think the price point will be on the 15"?
