I have one from like 15 years ago or something. I don't even know why I bought it my macbook pro at the time had a cd drive. it's somewhere in the attic.

Good riddance. I haven't personally ripped a CD or DVD in years, and of course it didn't support BluRay anyway.

Yeah, people still use physical media - but not a lot of people ;) For those that need it, there are plenty of cheaper, better, or cheaper AND better alternatives.

I was just cleaning out crap from my desk caddy and saw mine that (I think) is a good 10+ years old. Was wondering if I should keep it.

My girlfriend has one and it is super useful to convert our existing audio CD collection to music files. I have an older flight simulator game that requires the original CD in the drive to unlock it. (I know I could emulate this)

Got one from Woot not too long ago during a clearance sale. Glad I did, if even to just say I had one.

I doubt it at this point they are extremely niche and any 3rd party external drive from Amazon works fine. I recently bought a 4k Blu-ray drive to rip my physical library to use in plex.outside of ripping my physical media I have no other use for it
Which 4k Blu-ray drive did you get? I'm looking for a reliable one that works with new Macs.

I bought one in 2017, 2 years in to having a 2015 launch day 12” Retina MacBook which obviously did not have a disc drive. Previous machine was 2008 Aluminum unibody MacBook which did have one. I bought it “just in case”. There has been no case. I used it once but it was NOT mission critical. lol.

It’s still kinda crazy to think about this just straight up not being available though.
People still use optical media as a primary data storage? Luddites.

Sort of on this note, can anyone recommend a Blu-ray writer that works with Apple Silicon?

I have a Samsung External Blu-ray DVD (SE-506BB). It's from 2013. I think it's going bad. It reads Blu-rays & DVDs, and *sometimes* burns them. I can't seem to find one to replace it to use to burn data Blu-ray discs that will work on Apple Silicon.

This Samsung drive was great. It was powered by a USB-A cable and that's it. All the ones I'm seeing now either need a power supply or have to use two USB ports for power.

Anyone have any recommendations for someone who still needs to burn Blu-ray data discs and is on an M-series Mac?
I saw a Pioneer external one using USB-C for about $110 (regular BD) or $170 (UHD BD)

Yes and no. Latest reports say they are on track to release the SuperDrive 2 with the Thunderbolt 5 introduction. With 80 Gbps, it'll be able to burn a dual layer DVD in less than a second.
So let me do the maths. :)

DVD rotational speed at 1X (about 1.4MBytes/sec) averages at about 1000 RPM.

So to write a dual layer 8.4GB DVD in one second, that would require that the disc spin at six million RPM.

I hope you're wearing a kevlar vest and asbestos pants.

Got mine years ago, and i still works fine. Looks good too! :)
I am sorely going to miss optical drives for MAC. They were a solid build with a minimal footprint.

I also still use mine to rip movies & tv shows that are not available on the Australian iTunes Store.

I always wished Apple had made an blu ray super drive. I guess the DVD player app will be next to go for Mac OS :(

Even decades later there is no real alternative to disks that allows you to store data in a way that it can't be altered. Those disks also have the advantage that they are not affected by any kind of radiation and they can even get wet without losing the data.

A normal hard drive for example is bricked, if you accidentally plug your notebook power cable into the socket of your hard drive. Those plugs both used to be round and just have a slightly different diameter. I lost two hard drives because of that.

I need a Blu-ray external drive at some point…

Currently use an Xbox HD-DVD usb mini plug/cable (external power supply) 🫨😬
