My dealer phoned me re my Jan 6th order. He told me that it is a "hard drive" issue and that Apple had confirmed Feb 19th "shipping worldwide"

Apple always says its a hard drive issue, but thats not true, because theres 4 different possible hard drives you could have with this machine, and not everyone will have chosen the same one, for example I chose the 7200RPM 320GB drive over the standard, so they would have shipped some if it was a hard drive issue as not all 4 different types of drives would be having problems.

Well, without knowing what he's talking about I'm guessing that 90% of people don't use the power they have let alone four cores. Also, most apps are not built to take advantage of multiple cores so if you have four, eight or 30 cores it wont make it run any faster.

Umm, sorry but I don't think you can use the word stunning like that. There is nothing stunning about that machine. The only thing I like that about is the number pad, a macbook from 2002 is more stunning that that dell.

A 17" laptop is generally regarded as a desktop replacement. For whatever reason you need something that is at least as powerful as a mid-range desktop that weighs in the 7-12 lb range and can be carried around. I don't personally see the point (a full desktop makes a lot more sense to me) but some people like them.

The problem here is that apple doesn't seem to be going by the same logic with the mbp17. It doesn't have a high end graphics card, multiple hard drives, extra i/o ports or anything else you see on desktop replacements that actually justify the size, but it isn't really significantly smaller either (1-2 lbs is not that much, and thickness isn't really that important). It really seems to fall in the same category as the Dell M4400, which has the same resolution, better processor, better GPU and is only 15". It's anemic for a desktop replacement and large for a portable workstation, so I don't really know what it is meant to be.

Very good call bro. The biggest issue I have with the machine is that it's only a 15" with a 17" screen. We are lucky that Apple can get more cooling done with the case, possibly (rumored) to give it full clocked components. Other than that, it's really just a slightly heavier 15" MBP with a hi res 17" screen.

I talked to the woman who is in charge of my replacement case last Thursday and she said my 17" was still scheduled to ship Feb 13-Feb15.

This is true, it's almost an insult, however even the 15" is hardly a 'pro' machine, ok so it's the most powerful official portable Apple OS X running machine but that makes it a far way off being pro. No firewire 400, cheap TN panel, joke with no blu-ray superdrive, and only 2GB of RAM, so yeah the 17" isnt so bad for only $200 more.

Yeah, I really consider the Apple "Pro" line to be high end consumer rather than professional.

The 2GB version is $1,999, the 17" is $2,799.

I keep scratching my head and asking myself why I spend so much money on these machines too. And you are right, another reason I get the 17" machine is because the $300 is well spent... but then I remember that $300 can get me a whole 'nother laptop.

I agree, but now with PC lappies getting quad core, it's more on the average side. Nice design of course, I will of course be getting one by Rev D at the earliest so hopefully there will be quad core chips comparable to the PC market at that time, but average at best.

So I was just browsing Wikipedia and noticed that, in the specs they have listed on the MBP's, under "Memory" it says "4GB (two 2GB) of 1066MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SO-DIMM SDRAM (Expandable to 8GB, only 6 addressable.)"

First I was like:
But then I was like:  "It's Wikipedia."

Can the aluminum 17" MBP really only address 6GB of RAM, when it can be configured with 8GB?!

 $300 will get you a crappy little netbook that's made of Styrofoam and a screen made of orange peel. :D As far as a decent computer, PC or Mac, no freaking way.

17" Mac Book Pros delayed EVEN MORE!

I have just checked Apple's on-line German store.

Here we have for glossy display delivery in 3-4 weeks and with mate option (aka antiglare) 4-5 weeks.

Is there any delivery changes/delays in other stores?

Actually there is. I checked the US Apple store and the shipping dates for these 17" MBP have been delayed 3-4 weeks!

I'm guessing it's not shipping on the 19 of FEB. as Apple told some people it would.

Hmmmmm???? wonder what's going on? I still believe they're waiting to ship them out with SNOW LEOPARD.....

what do you guys think???????

No, its simple if you think about it, People who bought them earlier, are going to get them made and shipped earlier.

I wouldnt expect someone who buys it today to get it shipped before me who bought it on Jan 6th, so most of us will get ours shipped on Feb 19th, but everyone who buys it today from the Apple store will have to wait 4 weeks, until March 10th, not very complicated really.

I was really looking forward to this...

Has anyone seen any good shots of the 17" with matte screen option?

So, do you think this is always going to be on a "special order" status? When are they going to have enough of these in stock as to where it states on the Apple online store,"will ship within 24 hours" as other Mac books have?

If I order mine today and will have to wait 3-4 weeks, does that mean they are supplying orders one at a time on a first come first serve basis? I thought ALL 17" MBP shipped out at the same time to all customers once they were all ready, in stock, and ready to ship out.

It was actually down to 10 days about a week ago, but now its gone back up to 3-4 weeks, obviously too much demand and production issues.

Apple work on a first come first serve basis as do most companies. Theres no point keeping people who ordered it a month ago waiting while people are still ordering it now, thats not logical?!?!

Thats true....I guess we'll have to wait and see what the "fuzz" was all about. Like you say, perhaps this is all just supply and demand production issues.

But shouldn't they know by now to have a good quantity of this product available at launch? I mean, imagine the sales! Oh and the same thing happened with iPhones, not enough made.......people fighting in lines and stuff...lol...*sighs*............go figure.:p

Still a computer, great for checking email, surfing the web, and punching out documents. Some have more expandability than the Macbook Air even.

A quick search of Flikr yields this example of the new 17" MacBook Pro with the anti glare display

If that’s really the new MBP, it looks kinda nice without the black border around the screen. I wish they also had a silver keyboard so that the entire machine would be single-coloured.
