BTW: you have a kick-ass office! Looks like you are a stock/options trader.

I think he controls the Matrix. Why would anyone want to post pictures of their office? I guess if you've got a nice camera and no interest in photography, lol. I think he could do with a few more monitors, though. :p

They make a "Pro" laptop. Hopefully Apple will someday too.

You might not want to look at this. It's not pretty or thin.

its actually quite stunning..my colleague got his a few days ago, i should get mine in a week..i think it will arrive before my mbp 17".

he got 2 hrs battery life the other day, with wifi on and running some heavy 3d apps and an external drive was plugged in as wwell.. it aint heavy by its self..its the bloody power adapter thats the size of an HP mini thats heavy :)

Well, why don't you educate everyone since you're so much smarter? Jeezuz, apple people are an annoying lot these days.

Well, without knowing what he's talking about I'm guessing that 90% of people don't use the power they have let alone four cores. Also, most apps are not built to take advantage of multiple cores so if you have four, eight or 30 cores it wont make it run any faster.

Umm, sorry but I don't think you can use the word stunning like that. There is nothing stunning about that machine. The only thing I like that about is the number pad, a macbook from 2002 is more stunning that that dell.

I agree, but it will always be dependent on the apps used. More cores does equal faster if using apps and OSes that are core aware, and there are some apps that even Apple codes that are very core aware. Not to mention the soon to be released (if all goes well) Snow Leopard.

This is very true. The Dell Covet is a much better option IMHO, and the only thing I find stunning about either machine is the option for quad core and 16GB of RAM. The Covet keeps those and remains at 1" thick.

Dell Covet:

Height: 1.35" (Front), 1.5" (Back)

Preliminary weight starting at: 8.5lbs!

oh im terrible sorry.. its STUNNING compared to the other dell models that are quite gay.. the MBP 17" is in a class of its own..:D

A MacBook from 2002 would be more than just "stunning".

Anachronisms aside, very interesting to see how much Dell is marking up hard drives.

the MBP 17" is in a class of its own..:D

Yes - a class called 'yet again, delayed, and customers still left without their £2k Laptop'

It's a beautiful machine - but I question it's label as 'pro'. It lacks a workstation class graphics card. It lacks an HD optical drive (for content creation). It lacks any sort of card reader for photographers. It lacks the £100+ of video adaptor leads required to plug it into monitors - one of which doesn't even work properly yet. It lacks an appropriate set of features for a £2k laptop.

Now that people have started comparing machines I started looking into it and for the power you do get(minus the few things people complain about) the price of the 17" is not bad. When you add those features on any other laptop the price usually goes higher, that's pretty interesting because I though the Apple tax was higher than that but for the hardware it seems pretty spot on.

I do have to say that the Dell M6400 does look really nice. If I was going with anything other then a 17" MacBook Pro it would be that unit. I love the wrap-around orange it really makes it pop. But it is quite large and heavy. The MacBook Pro is a compromise between Power vs. Size & Weight, its a compromise that I'm happy with. The Dell seems more focused on replacing a high-end Desktop Workstation system. 16GB RAM support is amazing for a Notebook.

EDIT://
Also looking on Dells website they sell a Studio 17 which is really really nice. It would be a toss up between that and the other if I wasn't going MacBook Pro

As mad as I am that it's been delayed once I get this greatness in my hands I'm sure all will be forgiven.

Its going to be the same board in the 15"
its like this.. AS SOON as i heard its delayed, i tried canceling my order..the ****ed up apple people in singapore are flatly refusing to cancel, it..[ corporate account!, not paid?? not charged yet??] and its a custom order..when i screamed a bit our engineer spoke with someone at apple asia and they said they are "aware" of the serious nvidia problem, and THATS why its delayed cos they're trying to fix it before release.. so for me its simple
scenario 01 > i get it test it it works fine im happy.
scenario 02 > i get it i test it its screwed i return it and get a full refund
scenario 03 > i ordered 29th jan, order was processed 2nd feb afternoon, if someone else gets it before me and i hear it has problems, i simple tell apple that im not gonna pay once they deliver so they should sweetly cancel the order.

and either which way it goes down..ill have my Juicy M6400 by my side running linux, cos vista sucks..and i wait 6 months and then buy the MBP17"

If it is the NVidia issue I doubt they could fix all the machines they've already made in that amount of time unless it's a software/firmware fix. If it's actually hardware I can't imagine that two weeks gives them enough time to replace components.

Does brute force testing the hardware work, do you think that would actually bring an HW error to the surface? I have no problems stress testing for a solid 48 hours to know that the machine is solid when I first get it. Either way with Apple Care I'm sure something will come up within three years so I'm not that concerned.

I have to agree, the new Lenovo 17" laptop is such a different beast and defines itself more clearly as a 'Pro' spec machine.

Regardless of its beauty (or lack of), it has 2 screens, 2 hard drives, and most importantly, a card reader, an inbuilt hardware colour calibration tool, which has been tested to be as good as external colour calibrators.

I have been tempted to move away from Mac because of the hardware capabilities, but at the moment it is OSX all by itself which is holding me back.

exactly!! a software / firmware fix is not a fix but most prolly a workaround. i doubt that they can change nvidia boards on thousands of laptops in 2 weeks :)

theres a tool from apple tech that tests the nvidia hardware [ they use a similar tool to check for defective 8series boards.. ill run that as well, and maya and quake wars and shake and nuke

Its going to be the same board in the 15"
My first Late 08 MBP (first week of November) had a bad case of the infamous black screen of death. It was replaced with a machine that never exhibited it. It had a failure relating to the optical drive and it was replaced with another machine that once again did not have the BSoD. So two out of three Late 08 MBPs, all with identical configuration and swapped hard drive, were just fine. This means not every single one is defective, at least immediately. After months now of heavy graphics workouts still no failures. Reports of new 15" units shipped out as recently as this last week indicate the problem still pops up in some units so the 17" is probably not guaranteed to be free of this issue.

Point being, not every board in this configuration is bad so you have a certain percentage chance in favor of getting one without the problem.

the 2nd screen on the w700 is crap by the way..only good for running IM apps..and its not the same rez as the main display..

the wacom is a GREAT idea cept its too close/below the keyboard..takes a lot of getting used to.

Lenovo markets that the screen isn't spec'd to color. It was intended for Photoshop palettes and other junk windows, while the main one, that can be calibrated with the onboard calibrator mind you, is the one that has far superior color to either the 15" or 17" MBPs.

Germany: delivery in 4-5 weeks!

I have just checked Apple's on-line German store.

Here we have for glossy display delivery in 3-4 weeks and with mate option (aka antiglare) 4-5 weeks.

Is there any delivery changes/delays in other stores?

Hard Drive

My dealer phoned me re my Jan 6th order. He told me that it is a "hard drive" issue and that Apple had confirmed Feb 19th "shipping worldwide"
