Floridians: This might be usable in conjunction with Florida's tax-free back to school sales tax holiday. https://floridarevenue.com/backtoschool/ . Computers and tablets up to $1500 are covered, so that's an additional 6% or more (7.5% for me) off the price depending on where you live and what you buy. It runs July 29 through August 11, and Apple's back to school promotion will probably overlap it on both ends.

Back to school already? Students were just released for the year. Jesus. Unbelievable. Greed knows no bounds.

Many schools have been out for a month or so already. And I know many students who just graduated from high school who are busy getting all their stuff together for college. Getting a computer or an iPad is a high priority for many, especially when they got cash or giftcards as grad presents.

Hope they do something with decent cashback or promo in the UK. I get a 10% or £100 discount on everything (with my .ac.uk email) but the US/Canada deals are always better.

Maybe if the giftcard value was closer to £250/$250+ then people will be more likely to jump for this

College professor here.

I’m all for this. Even though many students just got out of school and won’t be going back for 10 weeks or so, it’s great that they get more time to shop for and acquire a new computer or iPad. They get the summer to set it up, play around with it, develop some good use-cases. Or just have fun with it.

And like many of you said, some students take summer classes.

The back to school sale, plus the year-round student discounts, are a really good thing. Sure, students can get a Windows laptop cheaper than a Mac, and I’m glad that option exists. But narrowing the price gap will bring the cost of a Mac within reach of many students, and Macs typically last years longer than cheap Windows laptops.

This is what I'm planning on doing. $100 education discount, ~$100 sales tax savings, and a (likely) $150 gift card to use towards some new AirPod Pros, makes that a killer deal all around.

Why? The whole point of the comparison is to say that more expensive Macs last longer than inexpensive Windows laptops. The value proposition should be considered. It's a valid comparison.
It's actually not valid though, as there are more expensive windows laptops (that often end up still being cheaper than the mac counterpart while offering more spec for spec) that last just as long, if not longer when you factor the longer years of support.

Which brands make long lasting laptops? I may buy their products next time. I am sick of TC using software to limit the lifespan of their expensive Silicon MacBook Pro that cannot run other OS natively.

Can’t wait for this. For some reason, I thought it was gonna be August and I was waiting until then to buy a MBA.

Hopefully, it starts Monday. I wish stores sold the 16 gig version so I could same day.

My only dilemma is now do I drive an hour and a half to a state that doesn’t have sales tax or just drive 10 minutes to the local Apple Store and get it when it comes in? Saves $70.

Also curious about the gift card. When I bought my iPad Air. It came with a free $100 gift card. I ended up with an installment for the iPad and an $8 installment for the gift card.

Although my 14-year old Intel MacBook Pro cannot run the latest MacOS and have no security updates, it can run Windows 11 well.
Microsoft surface would probably be one of the best comparisons since the surface laptop/tablet lines seem to have been designed to directly compete with Apple.

But most major brands have higher tier products at similar price points and quality, in addition to Microsoft I favor HP (Spectre, Elitebook, Envy or Omen), ASUS (ROG, Zenbook, Proart, Expertbook) and Dell (XPS, Alienware).

While I've recently bought a Macbook Pro, I'm still using an ASUS ROG laptop I bought in 2016 that's held up really well, wife has an HP Spectre from 2019 that's also done really well.

The free iPods were OK, but I didn't need them so I sold them, which was a big pain. I much, much prefer the gift cards.

BTW, I still have the Beats Solo 3 headphones I got one year, but I don't use those either. I find them a bit uncomfortable, and I'm not so happy with the sound quality.
