I upgraded my M1 Pro for the base M5 Pro and saved almost 10% buying from Amazon. To be honest my M1 Pro was still doing a great job, but my partners 2020 MacBook Air (the last Intel) wasn't so we both got an upgrade 😁

First: Agreed $500 is crazy but the upgrade to 16ā€ is $300 for the same CPU/Cores/RAM/SSD. So just a little less crazy.

Second: Because the 14ā€ 24/1 has the binned 15-core Pro and the 16ā€ 24/1 has the 18-core Pro and it’s a $200 list upgrade. The 14ā€ and 16ā€ Max models both use the same 18-core 32-GPU chips so delta is $300 not $500.
I didn’t even know they were using binned chips in the 14 Pro. So the base 16ā€ is 1 tier up from the base 14ā€ pro.

Can’t say I like that the 16ā€ pays an additional tax of not offering the base pro configuration for people who want the larger screen but really would rarely benefit from an 18/20 core vs a 15/16 core configuration. It’s a 20%/25% core increase for $200 so I guess it’s a good deal, but it’s a forced deal.

So where are the "Jobs would never let this happen" people? Because this is the very thing he'd never allow, a few weeks old computer to be sold for $200 off or even better, 15% off (Micro Center) And I'm not talking about this sale but these same prices back in March! And nobody should be fooled that this is not a manufacturer backed sale.

It’s one of the reasons I ended up going with the 16ā€ M5 Pro. For what I do, an ideal configuration could have been a base M5 with 32GB. But that combo isn’t available except in 14ā€ which turned out to be a little too cramped for me after using an Intel 2019 16ā€ MBP for the past few years. With a 16ā€ I had to choose the 18-core (base and binned M5 not available in 16ā€) and I had to choose at least 48GB (I didn’t want to go down to 24GB after having 32GB+8GB VRAM in my 2019). I figured now that Apple had me way higher up the pricing ladder just to get 16ā€ I’d spring the extra money and go all the way with 64GB since I use my MBPs for 5-6yrs the exorbitant cost is a little easier to handle since I won’t make another outlay like this for half a decade at least (hopefully). It’s been a beast of a machine, running all my apps, browsers, three virtual machines (Win11, 2xRed Hat), Ollama, and memory pressure barely cracks 15%, zero memory compression, zero swap. Love the performance, but my bank account is still in ICU. šŸ™‚

It's a bummer Apple doesn't offer the 14" M5 Pro with 48GB RAM and a 1TB SSD as a standard configuration.
Agreed! I’d even settle for 14ā€ M5 Pro (either Pro option), 48GB, and 2TB SSD as a standard option. Really any 14ā€ M5 Pro SKU with 48GB ram would be nice.

In the Steve Jobs era, the best you could hope for was 5 bucks off buying from MacMall. I am glad these days are behind us, and retailers can have actual sales. Also, during the time of Steve Jobs, BTO devices were only returnable if they were DOA. Otherwise, once it shipped, you were stuck with it.

Am I the only one who wants standard options with nano texture? I can never find deals on those, and I couldn't go back to glossy.
