I got Covid pretty badly and am still experiencing the side-effects. So crowded places for me aren't happy any more, and I suspect I'm not alone in this.

In what way? I only knew about the on-device ads because I saw them discussed here, and after that I had to go looking to find one. If I wasn't a MR reader I never would have known about ads on any Apple device. Though some people clearly did see them it was hardly a "problem" for everyone.
it was showing up in apple wallet

Exactly. I had to go there to find it after there was reporting on it here. I just opened Apple wallet and there are two ads - for Apple Cash and for the Apple Card. If I hadn't opened the wallet I would never have known they were there. Just like the promotional discount for the F1 movie. I understand some people got a notification about the promotion, I'm one of those who didn't.

good for you. I just find it baffling that they'd use such tactics , and that people defend it is just so rich

What is confusing about this topic is ads placement had been around for a very long time and inconspicuous places as well. In this sense it was in some Apple wallet. So the occurrence of it happening outside our comfort zone continues but in different forms. To me and ads if it bothers me or not, I don’t buy their products anymore and I think this is why people have to learn if you don’t like the product don’t buy it if it bothers you that much. I’ve lived by this premise for a very long time. If I get spammed enough, I no longer touch their products or buy them, etc..

A friend of mine is still impacted by long covid symptoms and for the most part doesn’t leave the house much except to go to medical appointments or the hospital, usually with stuff they wouldn’t expect to deal with until much later in life. It was as if it did 30 normal years’ worth of damage to their internal organs over the couple weeks in the hospital. They were in the “lucky” half of patients that survived the first wave in that hospital. They’d like to be able to go out and do stuff, but really can’t w/o another person to help them.

And as of today, it's made $393M & it's on the way to being Brad Pitt's biggest movie. Gooooooo :apple: indeed.

It has grossed that much so far, yes.

"...it needs to gross at least half-a-billion worldwide in order to break even theatrically, even if Apple is relying on its theatrical run as marketing for its eventual release on streaming"

Actually no we don’t know the exact figure. In terms of production cost, remember there are reports that Apple received $40 million in product placement fees. Also tax rebates/credits on film production in various territories.

And on the revenue side, it isn’t straight from theatrical to streaming - their are several PVOD release windows (premium rental, standard rental, purchase, promotional), and even physical, cable, and broadcast rights licensing (yes its still a thing even for streamers if they choose).

Traditionally the post-theatrical release windows usually more than cover a popular film’s P&A budget (“prints & advertising” which in the digital age usually just means advertising).

But in terms of long term profitability there are two other major considerations for Apple:

1. How many extra subscribers does it bring to AppleTV+. For every million subscribers Apple brings to its service, that is $100 million in extra annual revenue, all of which is pure profit margin for the service.

2. Does it kick start a franchise? If a film is popular enough to start a franchise (a series of related films) it’s worth is a lot higher than its initial box office performance, as for franchises the follow up movies generally are far more profitable than the first one (due to a built in audience).

F1 continues to perform above expectations, especially internationally, going to easily cross $500 Million.
