I'm just so glad they finally stopped making that POS keyboard. Those were the absolute worst MacBook Pro years of my life. I hated everything about that keyboard.
I actually liked the shallow keyboard travel once I got used to it. But as for reliability... it was the worst keyboard I ever used. Absolutely shoddy design.

I'm included in this. 2017 MacBook Pro. full keyboard replacement.

bad again. worthless.

I hope I get $395 out of this.

So I can just throw it out and not have to worry about selling this crappy machine to someone else

worst $3,000.00 I ever spent on a computer.

For this settlement, every consumer who purchased this faulty MacBook keyboard deserves a hefty amount of settlement paycheck.

You mean everyone who actually had problems AND they didn't get fixed, right? Because anything else is just greed.
(But those people really deserve to get a good settlement)

I never had any problems with the keyboard (until i replaced it for a M1 Air), but i bought it when the 2nd gen version arrived, so that probably made it less likely to happen.

I'm sure many people had problems, but the macbooks are sold in such high volumes, that "many" can still be only like 1% or something and it will still be a lot of people.

Did anyone in the EU start a class action lawsuit? This was a US class action lawsuit…

I hope so. The butterfly keyboard issues didn't just harm Americans. I'm in the UK and still suffering emotional trauma from the keyboard on my 2017 MacBook Pro 13". Had it repaired at the Apple Store and it didn't fully fix the issue, so I think I should qualify.

I had one of my MBPs keyboards fixed 4 times... still doesnt work correctly.
I hope you’re rewarded with $5k from this settlement. They should pay people who were affected many times much more money. And if it’s still not working, they should also give you a brand new M1/M2 version of it.

Apple knew what it was doing, as the top executives still had to sign off on Ive’s poor decisions in form over function. The thing is Apple never screwed up the desktop Magic Keyboard.

At least Apple has done the right thing with the new MacBooks. I wonder if this was truly part of the decision to get rid of Ive but call it a consulting deal for three years then he quietly goes away for good?

This settlement is a step in the right direction. But I think the only way to get true closure on this issue is for Jony Ive to self-flagellate on a live web stream before personally writing a letter of apology to everyone who bought an affected Mac.

I had 2 top cases replaced on my 2017 MPB, once for the keyboard issue, and once for a faulty touchbar. I wonder if apple is just doing a sweep for top cases for any reason (as the reasons could have a ton of different names from geniuses typing in the issue, its not normalized) and I get the full 395 payment.

That laptop was a ship of theseus. 2 Top cases, 1 screen, 1 mainboard.

"Apple nonetheless concluded that a settlement "is in its best interests" to avoid additional time and legal expenses involved with prolonged litigation."

Of course they did. They made a ****** keyboard (thanks to Jony Ive) that everyone knew was faulty and garbage upon release and then tried to, as they always do, shift the blame from their own hubris and obstinatecy on to the consumer and everyone else but them.

"Only a small portion of our customers".... ********. That's why you had people returning them and bringing them in for repairs in droves Apple.

This was a garbage design. They knew it. This judgement should have been much much higher.
It’s always “a small portion of our customers”…

This is nice of Apple but as a Canadian customer I have no idea why they didn't apply this to North America.

For example, The Retina MacBook Pro Mid-2012 had its fair share of recalls, Display related image retention issues, faulty Nvidia graphics chips on the logic board, then display-related wear and tear on the clear coating caused a 2nd screen replacement. This was all done under extended warranty recall in Canada, and USA wide notices some of which were only visible to Apple Admin's.

Its really a global issue but they should have taken care of Canada. Oh well. I guess I'm glad I don't own one of those MacBooks, nor will I ever.

I could NEVER get used to that shallow travel. I ended up using a 2015 model until they finally went back to the scissor design. Every time I typed on that butterfly keyboard I hated my MacBook. It was all I could think about every time I typed. In my opinion easily one of the worst, if not THE worst, design decisions ever made by Apple.

Had one of these MacBooks, still do. Great laptop and love the thin keys. Never had an issue. $395 when they replaced the error already is more than enough. I wouldn’t admit to an error if I’d offered a replacement either. Move along, nothing to see here. Except the Lawyers winning again. Shocker.

I get that this is how these cases end up going down most of the time to allow for quicker settlement and payment to the people affected (and lawyers involved), but this quote in particular grinds my gears a bit:

"Apple ... denies that any MacBooks are defective"

Ouch! 🥴

Deny all wrongdoing. Ok so Apple basically frames this settlement as “good will” rather than accepting defeat. Typical Apple fashion and this just shows they never learn.
You Apple consumers never learn either, of you did you wouldn't cheerlead for Apple so hard.

Stop praising this company and hold them accountable instead.

It's a company that is only going to be tamed by lots of regulation
Critics will say the lawmakers don't understand tech. They probably don't, settlements like this are pretty clear cut!

AFAIK, even Samsung admitted they were wrong with their Note 7 batteries. They didn't try to hand wave it as "you're using it wrong".

I don't understand! How is Apple denying this claim? Clearly, the flaws are there. Yet willing to pay $50 million dollars?
From the article: "All individuals who fit the description of the proposed class have the right to exclude themselves from the settlement. By excluding yourself from the settlement, you are not eligible to receive a payout as part of the settlement, but retain your individual rights to sue Apple for the same allegations outlined in the class action lawsuit." I'll assume you can figure the rest out for yourself.

It wasn’t a judgment. It was a settlement. Which means the Plaintiffs thought it was enough $ to not risk a trial, where they could get….ZERO.

It’s amazing—you people have no idea of the evidence and the decisions the lawyers and litigants have to make.

Newsflash—THIS IS HOW THE LEGAL SYSTEM IS SUPPOSED TO WORK.
Coming from the son of a lawyer I know exactly how the legal system is supposed to work so miss me on that.

Yes I know it was a settlement but semantics aside the sentiment still stands
