So in other words it makes no difference whatsoever. I never limit my battery charge capacity because I want 100% all of the time on all of my devices. I only charge via wireless (have since the iPhone X days) and after around 200 charge cycles my 15 PM is at 98% health. So similar on average as people who insist on wired charging and limiting their capacity once I factor in a few more cycles.

iPhone 15 Pro here since around 30 September 2023; always charging to 100% (usually overnight, with "optimised charging" on) I'm on 91% maximum capacity but with a 451 cycle count. (Perhaps I just use my phone a lot?!)

The author did it as a test. Those of us who are comfortable with 80% Limit are not running this risk.
It was a bad test. Charging over 80% may be slightly harmful, but running down to 0% much more-so. Author's test would have been good if they'd taken pains to ensure they didn't spend an excessive amount of time below 10%. I daresay it was actually counterproductive/harmful, if it caused them to fully deplete the battery when they otherwise wouldn't have.

The idea of charging between 20 and 80% was born because of a coincidence (read more here) and it is not based on anything truly scientific.
There's actually an avalanche of scientific research and evidence about aging of lithium batteries and how it's bad for them to spend time at either extreme. I don't see where it's contradicted in your linked article.

IMHO the limit is less impactful from a normal use perspective. As you’ll age the battery more with deep cycling or heat than you would from charging to 100%.

These limits shine when you’re leaving your iPhone plugged in all the time. Where being stuck full really hits the battery wear level.

I charge my 15 Pro via MagSafe every night, NOT using the 80% setting.

My phone is at 98% with 251 cycles.

Mine’s at 90% despite always using the 80% limit so… 🤷‍♂️

It was at 100% until around when the first iOS 18 beta came out, then it immediately crashed to 90% over the course of a week where it’s currently sitting with 318 cycles

I also tried my best to avoid having it drop to under 20%, but it’s definitely happened

Overall dissatisfied with the battery on my 15 PM - especially after iOS 18
My 13 PM felt way better

Now my M1 MBA on the other hand, he’s a trooper!
Got it in 2021, it’s still at 99%

Don't get it. Had phone since day #1. Use each and every day.

This seems kinda dumb…
So to prevent your battery from degrading to a lowered capacity, you’re going to artificially lower the capacity lower than it likely would have degraded to through normal use?

Like, I’ve have my 13 Pro Max with heavy use at 84% capacity. It would be another few months before I’d start to see a benefit, but I’m already waiting on a new phone in the mail.

This just seems needless.

15 Pro Max, MagSafe charging exclusively. 144 Cycles 100% maximum capacity

Similar cycles but 100% max cap and overnight 80% limit until i wake up when it does the 100% thing.

Was at 95% capacity.

I used a magsafe gen 1 charger pretty much exclusively

iPhone 15. 242 cycles. 94%.
Maybe used the 80% limit for the first 50 charges and have been using no charge limit since.

I’m not proud of these numbers, in terms of my usage habits. But anyway:
  • Health was at 100% until around 250 cycles, I think. It was 319 / 95% in April.
  • Used minimum 30W chargers the vast majority of the time. Mostly 65W+.
  • Rarely used wireless charging
  • Charging limit was set to 80% until very recently, with the exception of a vacation or two

I feel like I got very lucky with my 15 Pro battery! It was actually still on 100% health when I checked it last month.

It’s always charged via MagSafe, always at 80% limit except if I’m on holiday etc where I set it to 100% temporarily.

Exactly, it's for some people and not others. That's why it's an option and an option that defaults to 100%. Everyone wins.

Ok, but that just means that you are essentially charging it more which effectively negates the point of limiting the amount of charge you are giving the phone. Why would you not just charge it once to 100% instead of charging it multiple times throughout the day to ensure your phone doesn’t die?

iPhone 15 Plus
Always set to 80% except a handful of vacation days, always charged USB-C
First Use September 2023
100% capacity, 196 cycles

Never used 80% limit.
In-car wireless charging a lot.
92% with 253 cycles only.
Big fan of always-on display.

I think that's the worst result I've had. Disappointed. 92% is low after just a year!! (and I'm no heavy user at all)

15 Pro Max, 12 months use, always with 80% limit set, almost all charging via USB-C cable= 100% after 158 cycles

I didn’t read all the comments, but don’t forget that the iPhone 15 is the first iPhone rated for 1000 cycles, not 500 cycles like previous models. Y’all are throwing numbers around and perhaps not taking that into account, comparing these numbers to previous iPhones. Also, in my experience about health stays pretty high for the first year, and starts dropping more quickly after that.
