I'm so looking forward to the return of MagSafe. Already broken two USB-C cables during one year. The connectors are so fragile. It's a real headache if you use and charge the laptop in cafes or any other location than your desk. Sure, the old charger cables broke sometimes, but usually only after countless accidents.
While the MagSafe connector definitely is superior on the computer end, I sure hope the cable itself will still have a USB-C plug on the other end and is not permanently fused to the charging brick. Both so that it can be replaced and so that the pile of third-party charges I already have can still be used if buying the MagSage cable separately.

Apple's charging cables themselves are quite low quality IMHO. Nice when brand new but after some time the 10 cm or so closest to the computer tend to become discolored, harden and eventually fray. At the office we have plenty of both MagSafe and USB-C cables where this has happened, the latter can easily be replaced but the former cannot.

Wait they’re putting an SD card slot back in? Why? What modern electronics still use the SD tech and not the modern CFexpress? DJI drones?
Is Apple adding a card slot to their professional tier of laptops for people who have dated cameras or drones? Even if SD cards are in modern cameras they just the slower backup card in slot 2.
A lot high end cameras still use SD cards. Drones and go pros still use them too.

I hope they stick with USB-C and jump to 240W. The latest standard allows USB-C chargers to output 48V(up from 20V) which makes the max wattage 240W rather than 100W.

I love being able to charge from either side. Currently MacBooks can/do consume more than 100W which forces them to drain their battery even if they are plugged in. 240W would also allow much much faster charging.

In the UK I can pick one up in a number of Apple stores today, or get one delivered for Friday (tomorrow if I pay) from the online store.

Are you joking? Most modern electronics use SDHC cards. CFExpress is largely reserved for professional imaging products like the Canon EOS-1D X or Nikon D6. Even then most high-end cameras like the Leica SL2 and Sony a9 use SD. Outside of cameras, most electronics today use microSD for its convenience. Apple would obviously want to choose the medium that the highest number of potential customers would use.

I ordered some electronic devices from China back in August and still haven't receive it today. The seller shipped it via fastest/expensive UPS deliver method and needs to route thru Hong Kong. The logistic told the seller, UPS in all China area is a mess now. Flights were cut down to 1/3 of normal volume so basically all parcels will take extra long delay to pass thru. It's unbelievable that Apple can move millions of iPhones 13 during these world-wide shipping crisis and delivered them on time
No idea of the precise location or routing, but I've had two orders (26th August and 1st September) delivered. Both took longer within the UK than from China to the UK - but only a few days in total.

Mine were not via UPS - is it just UPS that is in such a mess?

That's insane! Granted, I don't most people will suddenly need one but still for those that do, this is a LONG wait

Just looked and 13" models are in stock online and for pickup in the UK, but the 16" aren't. That could of course just be due to the shortages we've heard about recently. If there was an imminent refresh, both models would be on longer lead-times, but there's no doubt this charger change is the first step in getting ready for a switch.

Maybe Apple will ship the MacBooks without a charger, or with a smaller charger.
Some car manufacturers (Porsche, for example) are shipping cars with some non-essential parts missing, with a promise to have them installed by the dealers when available.
Strange times.
My guess is that this is more of a priority call, apple might need some of the same components for the new MagSafe charger, they’d priorities 1) units to ship with M1X MBP’s, 2) spare chargers for M1X MBP’s and then 3) legacy chargers (most people who want these have them already and there are alternatives on the market)

Given the availability of card readers which can handle both standards at a few pounds, and some cameras even support both CD and CF, would it be too much to hope Apple would support SD and CF?

(Obvious answer, is that it probably is too much to expect but not too much to hope for.)

For a company that prioritize thinness, it's appalling that Apple has not yet utilize GaN technology to make smaller chargers.

Oh, and will Apple exclude chargers on their new Macbooks? I mean it's for the environment, right? :D

Apple: "We run into some problems with distribution of our chargers, please bear with us".

Chi-tech manufacturers: "Hello there, look at the new piece of equipment I've developed in the last 24 hours..."

It would probably be a combined SD-CFExpress Type-A, similar to the slots in the Sony A7 Siii.

Why do you think SD is "old tech"?

CFExpress is still a very new format - Sony only launched their cards in July 2020, and there are only a dozen or so cameras that support it (https://camerajabber.com/buyersguides/which-cameras-use-cfexpress-cards/), and these are mostly high-end. The media is very expensive (c. $220 for 128GB vs c. $40 for a fast SDXC), so it is still a very limited market, and for the majority of people, SDXC is fast enough (certainly good enough for 4K 10-bit 422 video or 20 fps RAW photos)

SD cards are still *by far* the most common media format for mirrorless & DSLR cameras, Drones, and a whole host of electronics that require small removable media. It will be around for many years to come. Apple is future-looking, but they would be mad not to include SD compatibility in the new MacBooks (assuming they include any kind of removal media slot - which is not guaranteed)

I agree that the non-repairability of charging cables in old adapters was also an issue. A potential best-of-both-worlds solution would include a tailored USB-C port at the brick, where the entire connector (including the plastic part) would be inserted inside the brick, leaving only the cable coming out of the brick. Such set-up would be sturdy even on occasions when someone trips on the cable or when the charger is tucked into a backpack with the cable connected.

No worries. The next generation of Apple Silicon MacBooks will be shipped without a charger. You can procure a USB-C based charger elsewhere. There are plenty of third-party options available. You will be able to buy an Apple charger when it becomes available.

Problem solved, Tim. Invoice is in the mail.

Some phones still have SD cards and people rely on them, the nintendo switch still relys on a SD card, there are many devices that use it.

Whenever Apple discontinues a power brick, they offer one with a higher watt rating (otherwise they'd F over 15-16" intel macbook owners). Also Apple still sells 30-pin and magsafe 1 chargers so they always offer an option for legacy device owners.

So it's possible they're coming up with 100W(+?) charging brick. If so, I wonder what that says about the next macbooks. But if they are making a 100W brick I hope they utilize gallium nitride (GaN), current ones are huge.
Amen on GaN, it’s a little pathetic how much Anker’s and other’s latest chargers absolutely destroy Apple’s on size while maintaining quality, for ex the newish 20w nano is basically the size of Apple’s old 5w chargers, absolutely tiny compared to what Apple ships for 20w

Different OS, but I use an SD card in my Surface to store File History as a backup.

(Of course, my real data backups are elsewhere, but this can help in between backups, and before cloud copies have been achieved, etc.)

Lots of DSLRs still use SD cards. Some use CFExpress *and* SD cards, too (even the Sony Alpha 1, which is pretty modern). I would be happy with a sony-style combined SD/CFExpress A slot, but of course the Nikon and Canon folks would prefer CFExpress B. And someone out there wants CFExpress C.
