What makes you think the headphones/earbuds would have to be replaced every two years?

Well, if this were another thread here, I'd spew out a 2,000 word response parsing your use of the words "think", "you", and "replaced" and then attack you for daring to question Apple's design of an unseen, unreleased product.

Seriously, though, a two year replacement cycle would both match the typical mobile device battery lifespan and, perhaps most important, serve the replacement cycle strategy of Apple and the cell phone carriers.

Mahalo.

Yeah, Apple should have never created iTunes and splintered the music industry... That would be such an inconvenience.... /s

It's not about universality, it's about creating a better experience. If Apple can make it better, why wouldn't they?
Different argument all together, not even close to the same thing.

All this talk about new BT earbuds hitting the market... How long will it take before a lithium battery explodes in someone's ear? At least with regular BT headphones the battery isn't tightly nestled within the folds of your ear, lol.

I think the point remains... Deviating from universal standards is not against the greater good when it improves user experience. Sure, it's inconvenient to buy and learn new things, but that's how technology of any useful kind progresses.

FWIW, personally, I love the lightning connector.

Fine for me and I suspect, millions of iPhone/iPad users.

If Apple can make a wireless connection that is better than current Bluetooth connection they should do it. At the moment Bluetooth is hardly the best, no matter how "universal" it might be. I'm quite happy to have a pair of headphones that will only work with my Apple devices.
Are you kidding me? So you want separate headphones for your laptop? Or when you're on an airplane? Or maybe you like carrying adapters around with you everywhere? It's funny how people make excuses to cover for Apple. There is absolutely nothing gained by removing the headphone jack.

Who cares what they cost. I want Apple to show me the best wireless headphones ever made for iPhone, and I can't freaking wait to use them.

More trash to charge. And now a proprietary Bluetooth chip - This keeps getting more idiotic as we go.
Not a single thing idiotic about it. The very fact that you'd say something so pointless earned you an exclusive spot on the ignore list. Congrats!

Great, another splintering.. can't use the regular bluetooth chip that everyone else uses to make it universal.. No no.. we have to have our own nonsense again. This is getting old quickly.
It's called competition.

First, you have no reason to think this isn't going to be a standards compliant chip, but even if it weren't that shouldn't surprise you.

Maybe you're new to the Apple ecosystem, but this is what you've bought into: Apple does what they need to in order to make their products work well together. If they think interoperability is important, they open up the standard, if they see a competitive advantage to keeping it proprietary, they do.

If I had to guess, I'd say this one will either be standards compliant but optimized for audio, or new and they'll make it available to accessory makers.
Glad it's all about you and not for the greater good..

Instead of streaming music to headphones continuously, would it be cheaper/more energy efficient to just have a 32MB buffer in the headphones to store each song? They could be sent wireless to the headphones in a quick burst and then put the radio into standby mode until it gets another signal or it's time to queue the next song. Would that save battery life by having short, high-power bursts instead of long, low-power streams?

Kinda disappointed if these things cost more than Beats. I was hoping to pick some up for around $150.

That's a good idea. The only issue I see is playing DRMed content, like Apple Music or Spotify. Either the phone would have to decrypt and send the audio without any protection to the headphones, or somehow the headphones would have to be able to be authenticated and have the key.

This Buds is NOT for you.;)
LOL...if you are planning to buy Apple Car then you are right ;-)

If Apple makes custom Bluetooth chips they should at least be compatible with existing Bluetooth devices. Otherwise it can't fly! No one changes Car for damn phone!! :D

...

Is about the only appropriate response to that comment.

I'm very interested to see how Apple explains the elimination of the headphone jack; I really don't believe BT, in any capacity, is a compelling alternative. It will also be interesting to see how this news is received by the tech blogs... time will tell, I suppose.

This could be the big feature they announce after removing the headphone hack - an Apple custom Bluetoith chip.

Hopefully they eliminate current Bluetooth issues like lag or connectivity.

No doubt at the expense of good sound quality from connected headphones or in-ears.

People are misunderstanding the custom bluetooth chip. It's not for phone-to-airpod. It's for airpod-to-airpod. I believe this is how other similar products work. They rely on bluetooth for the phone connection, but then another wireless technology to connect each earbud.

Bluetooth 5 will be standardized in the next month or two. It quadruples range, doubles speed, and increases data broadcasting capacity by 800%.

Sounds like just the thing Apple would look to include in their ear buds. Apple was the very first to ship products with Bluetooth 4.0 (the iPhone 4S was the first phone available with Bluetooth 4.0, the MacBook Air and Mac mini right before it were the first 2 computers to make use of the standard).
