Similar tags/iot devices lasts for a year or more, these kind of devices use a tiny amount of power.
Rechargeble with a qi charger would be much easier than replacing batteries, hopefully they will be rechargeable.
MagSafe to the rescue!

Intrigued but hope it works better then when I need to have my Airpod Pro's play a sound because I cannot find one.

Yeah, I've never gotten this to work. Not once. I've had one pair of AirPods and one pair of AirPod Pros. I don't even try it anymore because it just doesn't work.

I wonder if these can be used with automations as you walk through your home. Like, place one in each room and when you walk in the lights automatically turn on, walk into the kitchen in the mornings and the coffee maker turns on, etc...

I’d think yes as they’ve shown a similar UWB enabled feature with the HomePod mini. I could replace my current motion detector solution :)

Similar things existed 30 years ago. It just was with remote control but same thing. Never got it as I never saw the need. If people have that many things in life that they keep losing then maybe it would be a good idea to 'de-clutter' their lives :)))
I'm actually in favor of decluttering. But, a car key is not something I'm willing to get rid of. Unless you mean that by decluttering, it means there are fewer places to loose the keys? 🤔

That wouldn't have helped us last time as the key somehow had ended up in the middle of the front yard. Which is not cluttered.

Decluttering I mean life. Car keys are easy to control as you either have them in your handbag (your wife's case) or its in the house on designated place. I really don't see a reason to misplace those. People tend to start forgetting and misplacing things usually when they are dealing with tons of stress, overworked and tons of things on their minds. Remove/reduce some of those and you will see how life gets easier. Remember when we were kids and we remembered everything and we often made fun of our parents who kept forgetting? It was because as kids we had really nothing to worried about and everything was provided to us so it was easy to keep track of things. Once our brains got full with bills, domestic crap, work crap etc. the brain filters the important from unimportant and here we are. Forgetting stuff.

So simplifying helps. No amount of technology will solve this for us. We need to learn how to "simplify/declutter" our minds before we do anything else. ;-)

That will be an interesting use case, tighter integration with HomeKit and Siri shortcuts. And their shorter range can make the triggers more precise.

If there are priced right, I’d buy a dozen ($20 to $30 each). If they’re priced like typical Apple hobbies ($40 or more each) I’ll buy just one, maybe two.

Really hope they are. I’d happily stick one to all sorts of things.

Provide 1 with every iPhone sold and then price them at <$5. Make them ubiquitous and super useful. Anything higher and it’s gimmicky, see the patent, there at 10 on that person, on each chess piece would already $100+ to outfit a set. Hopefully these are so cheap everybody uses them

If the rumored charging is true, then Apple will have a great product on their hands thats for sure.

How long before Tile issues a new statement about how Apple is being unfair and harming them with an unreleased and unannounced product that copies them?
Exactly.
These features way way beyond what Tile set out to do.
We can already see the implications on many fronts, like gesture gaming controllers, out of leaks... this isn’t still Apple and their marketing, showcase, keynote, etc dance.

Motion capture studios are going to have a field day when it all becomes executed.

And, the thing is, the framework Apple has built means that any company can enter the market with a compatible solution (perhaps aimed at different specific markets) and they’d be able to take advantage of the fact that a robust hardware and OS UWB solution is already in place, they just have to focus on the software.

I really want these but not for tracking lost stuff although maybe I’d end up using some for that too.

What I really want these for is more reliable and tighter-zoned geo-fencing. My research tells me that needing to be about 200 metres away from the location before a geofence triggers is pretty much the expected radius and that’s about what I get with my location-triggered shortcuts where I would actually like them to trigger as soon as I step in or out of my front door. If these tags are well integrated with Shortcuts I could put one just outside and one just inside my front door & use proximity to trigger entering & leaving. I know NFC can do that but that’s too short range, I want to simply walk in and out as normal without needing to tap in and out on NFC stickers. The range and resolution of iTags sounds as if they would be perfect though.
