I'm going to have a serious George Costaza problem if i put those in my wallet however I do need a wallet tracker because I'm always leaving it in the car, my work desk, at home, falling out of my pants in the bathroom.....

A user replaceable, rechargeable battery would be great!

I love the concept of Airtags, but it will be a tough sell against the Tile Slim if the actual device is as thick as the concept designs. I hope they have something small and slim to fit in my bag or wallet.
They have to make an unnecessarily thick one, so they can slim it down in the second version, and use that as a selling point. I think they've always done that.

Why are these things so special, I don't get the use cases for this. If you can't find something to the point you need to track it on your phone is it really that important to you. And, yeah, if someone steals it they'll never think to take the battery out.

If I attached this HOCKEYPUCK to my keys, I'm sure I would notice the weightloss and the thud, sooner than my phone would, if I lost them...
I guess that's Apple's plan anyway...

I'm interested to see how thick these are. The renderings make them seem about the size of the 38mm Apple Watch. I couldn't imaging sticking that inside my wallet or attaching something that clunky on my keys or remote control. I used to use the NUT trackers and my biggest issue is that if i dropped my keys, the tracker would come apart and the battery would fall out. However, I loved how thin it was.

Probably a bot. Look at the post times, it's often 1 minute after a story is published. I doubt anyone has time to read the story, type out a reply that isn't complete garbage, and send it in under a minute.
Yeah I started to realize that she was a bot, so I "ignored" her profile and don't see her posts anymore and when someone replies to her, it just says "You are ignoring content by this member. Show ignored content ". Great feature!

How big are these dang things? Sometimes they look as big as a Qi charging puck. Can't imagine them being useful for anything but suitcase or backpack tracking if they're that dang big. Would be cool if they were about the size of the domed area on the back of the AppleWatch. Then I could see the AppleWatch charger being useful for recharging these. They need to have a place for a loop to attach for hooking them to something like a key ring. They won't be much use if they have to be stuck on the surface of something.

Imagine someone jacks your car and drives off with it, and you have an airtag inside that is capable of relaying its location to you. If he is in a hurry, he may not have the time to search the whole car for a possibly non-existent tracker. To add insult to injury, it would be even more ironic if the thief himself were carrying an iPhone, because this means the location of your car is being triangulated off his iPhone.

This is a huge benefit compared to the tile tracker, because said product would be leveraging off an install base of over a billion devices, while the tile had to build up its user base from nothing.

In addition, I suspect the airtags is going to be integral to the apple glasses working properly, so I am most intrigued to see what role it plays in the bigger picture. It's always fun to see Apple lay the foundation for future products and initiatives.

I said on a post a while back that i hoped Apple implement the Air-tag directly to the motherboard so devices such as laptops can be tracked and thieves can't remove the tag.

With the rumour that the apple TV remote will be getting tracking, it likely air-pods would also get this feature.

One more thought is AARM, could it be possible that some element of the tracking could be SoC, Apple are waiting for the release of the first AARM laptops to announce this feature?

Other than AirPods, those devices have this feature already.

How far can you track these things? Like if you put one in your car and it gets stolen...could you track it? Otherwise I have zero use for them. If you can only track items within your house, thats kinda pointless to me. Sure, we all misplace things in our home every now and then...but how many people here never find them again?

That is what is great about putting it in your wallet. Over my life I have had my wallet fall out of my back pocket in a bathroom a couple of times. Thank goodness I found it by backtracking right after I could not find it. This at least gives you a better way to track it down faster. I am going to buy a couple for high value items that could be lost or stolen.

I agree that there are going to be two different models. Maybe not released at the same time, but eventually. Think of it this way: an Airtag on your keys is very different than one on a bike. Keys, I can throw on a charger nightly, one stuck to a bike, you can't. Unless they do holders like a GoPro where you can attach the holder anywhere and easily pop the Airtag off to charge.

That's just my pair of pennies.

I've been using Tile for some time and it's pretty convenient because I'm a forgetful person. I dont know how AirTag works yet... but if its main features are the same as Tile, I'm worried that Tile will make a move and sue.

It's been done already and, by the looks of the design (if that is the final design, of course), has been done better with Tile. So, is it really impressive? Hmm... I remember the time when Apple led and innovated. I was excited by Apple then. I well remember holding the first iPhone. Now they seem mainly to copy others, months or even years behind, often with inferior specs at higher prices. Fair play to them for getting away with it, I suppose. And yes, I still buy Apple stuff, but it can be delayed for months as far as I am concerned. I am beyond caring. But that's what age and a bit more perspective probably does for you!
As someone that is likely older than you and owns several Tiles, had XY FindIt, as well as some cheapie freebies from work, I'm gonna disagree with you. I've developed a bad habit in my old age of leaving things such as umbrellas, keys, or even my laptop bag behind.

Having tried several trackers, they all leave something to be desired. Tile had the most potential but refuses to implement geofencing in a way others like XY FindIt has. When the finally did offer it, for a fee, they didn't even do true geofencing, it was just for leaving an item behind at a single location....like home.

As usual, Apple is not the first one to launch a device...as a heavy PDA and smartphone user before the launch of the iPhone, I laughed because the iPhone OG was missing so many features. But in the end, Apple took something everyone else was doing and did it better, even if they were late in launching certain features.

I expect AirTags to be similar, they will do something already being done by others....but better. I just hope geofencing exists from the start or is added quickly because this is the feature I need the most. I need it to be proactive, not reactive.

I also hope there’s various versions, I love the tile wallet and would buy an ‘air tag wallet’ in a heartbeat. I worry it will not be out for the first release but will come later.

They work locally over about 20m’s. if you lose a device beyond that distance as long as another user goes within 20m’s then you’ll be notified of the devices location. So effectively they have global coverage / range so long as there’s users and data. The advantage Apple has is the number of users. Most items will be at some time close to an Apple device.

That's why Tile needs hardware access. Why would Apple need to give it?
I imagine to avoid an anti competitive position / perception. I’m somewhat in favour that as a user I should have this option and be able to accept or reject it on an app by app basis.

I sent a suggestion to Apple 2-3 years ago where I suggested they do this, but in reverse.

The "dots" should be cheap, distributed around the house and assigned a location (kitchen, bedroom, office, etc), stay fixed and instead used for tracking your iPhone (or rather, have the iPhone "ping" them) in order to determine your iPhone's location within the house.

That would revolutionize HomeKit, as now you could say commands without *always* specifying a location.
You could just say "turn on the lights" and your iPhone would use the dots in order to determine your exact location within the house and magically turn on the lights in the room where you are
It's coming
