The new App Store does NOT solve the main problem with the App Store ...
I'm assuming you like the malware infested Android choice. By all means go there. While Apple's latest implementation is poorly designed and absolutely convoluted. It's still better than having to install a virus protector on my phone.

only a tiny fraction of the apps that Apple recommends have any engineering accomplishment to them !

At a glance this comment make no sense. What do you mean by “engineering accomplishment?” Does an App have to be way out there in the complexity of coding and use of the newest features like VR to make your list or is it something else?

I could write the most technically advanced app that features everything in iOS and is written in the most efficient manner possible, but does it sell? That is a marketing and cultural thing. Something as simple as Facebook made a very young and inexperienced man a billionaire, but of course it has grown a bit more complex as the demands for security and privacy thrust themselves on the system.

Personally what makes me wonder is how does Apple choose the App to feature and does it cost something?

Want to prove how horrible the new app store is? Take a brand new iPhone 7/8 series device.. load the new store.. SLOW! Their back end needs a major kick in the butt. They went for visuals rather then usability. There's really no happy medium with this new design.

What does the backend have to do with the “visuals”?

The backend is slow pushing the graphics to the devices and bogging down server side system. Then they hit your device and the OS is playing catch up through cache. They need to trim the fat, the files are quite large for Apple graphics and with all the translucent graphics on screen cause memory issues to occur. So essentially it's a play on words here. One hand holds the other but in this case both are causing the problem. Their end can't keep up and our user end slows down as well.

Bring back the App Store to iTunes. That was the best way to browse around, which I did often. The App Store on the iPhone is too small and crowded to use.

To me, the days of looking at top charts are gone. I really only get an app if I’m looking for something specific or someone recommends something specific. I rarely, if ever, am wandering around the App Store anymore.
This explains why I love the new layout. I’ve never browsed the App Store by category. I’ve always just looked at the featured default page or used other websites for discovery. It’s obvious most people don’t look at anything else but the featured page too. Brilliant design by Apple. Most of MR doesn’t like it but this shows how out-of-touch we can be with the average user.

Top chats and best apps are all good, but its still control.. Apple's telling you this is good only based on number of downloads, popularity etc...

It's all FAD.... It's probably the only reason *why* your app has never been there, or ever will be not because its not good, but because others favor better.

I hate the new app store.

I actually love it. The old App Store was just incessantly flooded with “me too” flappy bird type games intended for 6yr olds or for intellectuals that wanted to be utterly stupid for hours at a time to relieve stress. Personally I found watching looney tunes circa 1970-1983 was far more entertaining.

Gotta hand it to Apple they really seem like they know what their doing. We like to hate on them by complaining so much what we want but their success rate to failures is pretty high and uncanny like fortune tellers.

At least that method is quantifiable. The previous method of “employees choice” just picked the common same theme month after month. Same apps all season long.

I actually kinda like the new layout. Sometimes you just have to change this up, and looking at Apple's numbers, the new layout isn't stopping people from moving to iOS or downloading apps.

Am i the minority then? I absolutely love the new app store. At first i was kind of apprehensive but after really using it, i find myself discovering and trying new apps because theres a nice backstory especially for the highlighted ones of the week or of the day. There is still free app of the week it's called "app of the week".

I guess the style is more like scrolling down a social media page and maybe that's why most people don't like it but to me its much nicer and helps me discover new apps.
