I'm hoping Apple "Thinks Different" for this year's BTS Special. Global economies are down, people are struggling with budgets, and all Cupertino will offer is an iPod or iPhone when buying a Mac?

I have a better idea. Instead of giving our spoiled youth something more to be distracted with in and out of class, how about just lowering the price of that Mac by the retail cost of the iPod or iPhone and throw in some Mobile Me or iLife/iWork discount love?

Otherwise the 2009 BTS Special is no BFD.

I'd bet that BTS will start AFTER the WWDC. THere is no sense to have it started when the current semester or academic year is still running.
And I don't see the customer advantage to have the iphone for free, when they have to sign the two years contract: one thing is a free ipod and/or touch, which can be sold, but what about iphone? How this thing is going to be sold if one has to honor the 2 years contract?

no one is forcing you to get the free iPhone. if you dont want to sign a contract, then get a touch or a nano!

Because then they wouldnt be clearing out their inventory for new iPods in Aug.

I agree, there should be more options for people who don't want another iPod/Printer. A Mobile Me subscription would be an excellent idea, or just a rebate/Apple Store card.

That is a good point, but there still would be a ton of people who don't have iPods, I think they still would easily clear stock even with choices other than iPods.

Mac mini

Here's hoping the Mac mini is included in the promotion this year. The "Apple Tax" is ridiculously high on these little machines, and a discount would align it much better with what it is actually worth.

Back to school? I thought American kids broke up for summer around the beginning of June??

That's why it runs into mid-September.

I'd bet that BTS will start AFTER the WWDC. THere is no sense to have it started when the current semester or academic year is still running.

Last year it started on June 3.

if this is the case i think i am going back to school myself :)

Yeah, I only paid $4800 tuition last year for my iPod touch. ;)

I think it's unlikely that a $599 product would get a discount.

Yes, it's what I assume, it's too soon...

@the iphone: I know nobody forces me to take it. I just was wondering that does not sound really appealing to me, I do prefer, in order: 1. a discount; 2. a free something, for the same value (iphone, ipod, etc.). Although, in this case, I'd much prefer free upgrades to the system for the BTS promotion. Say, a 2.4 MB at the current price of the 2.0, for instance

It won't happen, I'm afraid. That's not Apple-way-to-think...

You guys are spoiled rotten.

In my day we didn't have laptops, nor iPods to be given away for free with them. Sad but true, I can even remember using my fathers slide rule for school work before calculators where a reality.

Now I read this forum and see you guys getting all stressed out about whom is getting the better deal. Sorry if I don't get all emotional in support of you guys cause you are spoiled rotten.

Some things to note:

Apples back to school programs could hardly be considered inventory clearing if they have to up production to meet demand! I'm not sure where this idea comes from, but generally you clear inventory after ramping down production.

As an iPhone user I can see where it would be a big advantage for students if Apple & AT&T could come up with a discounted rate plan specifically for students. I may think you guys are spoiled rotten but I also recognize a great tool when I see it.

I tend to agree with others that Apple needs to be a bit more agressive with this years Back To School program. Unfortunately not because of the economy but because the current laptop line up is such a poor value for students. At least when looking at aluminum Mac Books it is. Ideally the program would pull $200 off the price and toss in a 16GB iPod Touch. Whatever the program is it needs to be better than what we got last year.

That is my 2 cents.

hmm

if i'm buying an iMac today (monday) and the BTS does indeed end up going into effect this tuesday, would i still qualify for the rebate? i know that when you buy a new computer if the price drops in the first 14 days of you purchasing your computer or something, you can go in and get the difference made up i believe. anyone know if i can do something similar with the ipod deal if i buy the computer today? and i know the obvious answer is 'well don't buy it today idiot' , but i have no choice for a multitude of reasons

if this is true then they would prolly put a restriction on there account. because if apple does the same thing as they did last year and allow us iphone holders to upgrade at the regular price.. then there basically giving them the phone for free without a contract if these people go and upgrade to the new one...

starting to think apple wont let us upgrade at the regular price of the new phone??:apple::apple:

No it won't qualify. I missed out last year by a week. The Apple Store people said sorry, but no. I could return it, pay the restocking fee, and then buy it. But then, I would essentially be paying for the new ipod.

"Yaer... I remember the good old days. When web pages were nothing but animated gifs, when 14.4k was blazing, and when we had no way of filling up the 160MB HDD on our LC 575..." :p

Not as classic as you, perhaps, but the early Golden Age of the Internet was good.

Amen to that. ;)

I you needed to buy it today be happy with it, if you need it. There's always a better deal around the corner when it comes to computers. If you can hold out, do that but heck, we don't even know what the new deal is yet?

Has it really come to that? Kids getting disappointed of a deal before it's even announced? Wow, talk about development of the speedy IT industry... :D

This is just rubbish, why won't they just start the promo in the UK at the same time :( Or atleast June/July :(

Looks like I'm waiting another day...

I guess I'm going to have to wait another day to order my new iMac. It's weird, I just was about to order and then I saw this headline. Phew.

When the new IPhone comes out does this mean the back to school special will include the new IPhone?
