Sure, 128GB is not as much as it could be at the base storage, storage is cheap, etc. etc.

But I got the 128GB iPhone SE 5 years ago and it just started to get full recently. And the only reason it's an issue for me right now is that I have 60GB of music locally stored, and the Twitter app for some reason doesn't ever clear its cache so it's taking up 7GB of storage for nothing. :p I barely have any photos on my phone since I dump them to my Mac pretty often. If you exclude those big storage things I am using right now, an average person would probably only use half of the 128GB phone. That said, I'm planning to get a 256GB or larger phone when they announce a new SE or whatever I end up buying this year.

I did get 256 GB for my iPhone 15 pro, even if I considered going for the base 128.

I didn't _actually_ need it:

This includes all the Apple Intelligence stuff... I think I was at about 48 GB for the longest time...

The problem on MR is that too many people expect Apple to give free upgrades. And there is also users who think that if they need more than 128GB, everyone else does.
It's not free upgrades, throughout years Apple phones have become more expensive and while some of it has to do with more elaborate and expensive tech built into said phones, some things like RAM and storage have become way less expensive per GB.
It would "cost" Apple close to pennies to make 256GB as base storage in phones and tablets and 512GB in iPad Pro and all their Mac's, but they want to squeeze every penny out of their loyal customers with their artificially inflated storage and memory upgrade prices.
Apple engineered this squeezing, not customers.
Apple products usually cost considerate premium over similar products by other companies.
If I pay premium, I expect to receive something more than an Apple logo in return for the money.
Apple isn't unique in neither of niches that it occupies in the market anymore so they might as well get on with times.

I just ordered a new phone, I always purchased the large 1tb options but this time I did a 128gb. With iCloud Photo Library and Apple Music I have used a whopping 58gb on my phone currently with over 40k photos, 8k videos, and a large music library. I just have optimization on for both and never worry about it.

Storage is so incredibly dirt cheap "nothing" for Apple on these and it would enormously benefit a lot of users to have 256 across the board ... and make those phones have a lot more longevity and a better experience with more of their files on device (locally stored full res photos and music)
Many users really don’t need more. Increasing the storage wouldn’t be cost-neutral if Apple wants to maintain their profit, because they would be losing the current 256 GB sales. So you’re really arguing for Apple to reduce their margins.

I’m at “only” 100 GB myself although I bought a 512 GB model three years ago to future-proof.

That's arguably more criminal than 128 GB base storage.
Yeah, the whole iCloud storage thing bothers me significantly more than 128GB base storage.
Given how much Apple charges for their devices, I really shouldn't have to pay them to have enough storage for iCloud backups. Yes, 1€/month is not a lot of money, it just feels like needless penny pinching on Apple's side.

I disagree. A lot of people can easily get by with 128GB.
I have a 256 GB phone (minimum for my model), and use less than 100 GB of it - with a ton of apps and caches in use.

I'd rather see them add more memory - being so stingy with it is why only one of the current models at the time of WWDC could support Apple Intelligence.

I never understand how people act like Apple literally doesn't have all the information about how much storage people are using. If this was really an issue or becoming an issue for too large of a group Apple would up the storage. The fact that they haven't really simply means it isn't.

MR isn't a good benchmark for **** like this. Just walk into a random university and ask to a bunch of people how much storage their using on their laptop/phone and the results will be shockingly little.

I don’t use 128 GB, and that will be a waste at least for me.

The new 8 GB of ram is the battery life on the Apple Watch. Competitors have much better battery life.

I never understand how people think Apple is making these choices with actual consumer needs or desires in mind .... ....irrespective of their own business goals

Folks -- this is not about consumer needs

It's keeping things "tight" to help drive people up the iCloud subscription tiers

Apple is all about Services growth
Just read their financials

“640k ought to be enough for anybody.” - Tim Apple (probably)
No, it was IBM.

The 640k thing was because - although the 8088 processor could address 1MB of RAM - the (stunningly mediocre) design of the IBM PC arbitrarily fixed the video RAM and ROM at the 640k mark, artificially limiting the contiguous RAM to 640k and requiring shenanigans for any software to use RAM beyond that. Other 8088/8086 computers could have the full 1MB but then they couldn't be 100% IBM compatibles...

The IBM PC really held personal computing back, whatever the written-by-the-winners history says.

I’m the same way and that’s because I keep all my photos in the cloud and not on my phone.

I agree in that the small Pro iPhone still starting at 128 is not ideal, but it’s quite serviceable for most people buying base or SE.
The 5GB of iCloud on the other hand needs to be addressed.
