Apple today released an updated version of Boot Camp, the software that allows the Windows operating system to be run on Intel-based Macs. Boot Camp 6.1.19 includes updates to the Precision Touchpad driver, according to Apple's release notes, along with other bug fixes.

This is the second Boot Camp update that Apple has pushed out in the last week, with Boot Camp 6.1.16 released on August 22. That update introduced WiFi WPA3 support and fixed a Bluetooth driver issue that could occur when resuming from sleep or hibernation.

Boot Camp users can navigate to the Start menu in Windows and open the Apple Software Update app to install the new Boot Camp drivers.

Boot Camp is a feature that is only available on older Intel-based Macs. It is not compatible with Apple silicon Macs, and these machines are not able to run Windows without virtualization software.

This makes sense as if anyone was on 6.1.17 they could not get the .16 update. I feel like .16 should have been .18.

Really curious why they're still updating it for Intel machines. I'm sure internally they have an Apple Silicon version ready to go, but Microsoft + Qualcomm is holding that back.

Every time I see a story starting with "Boot Camp Gains..." I am hoping it is ending with "Apple Silicon support"
Hopefully for Apple Silicon some day...

Sounds like it’s time for Windows on Mac Bounty part 2!

I hope so too but I have a feeling policy has changed at Apple. I don’t think they care at all about Windows anymore. I’m a little confused why they are even updating Boot Camp. They pretended it didn’t exist for the last several years. I have a feeling the team is being spun down and doing some last fixes before it is officially deprecated.

Never saw 6.1.16, but 6.1.19 is showing on my 2020 iMac 5K under Apple Software Update.
I assume these updates include everything prior since I do not have a touchpad, but do have WiFi and Bluetooth. :p

This isn't on Apple. Microsoft has to legally license Windows on ARM and as of yet have declined to do so. Hopefully soon whatever agreement between Qualcomm and Microsoft will be over.

Strange how a 6.1.18 was in fact released to address AMD graphics drivers, but was never really discussed or released widely. Perhaps they recalled it soon after release knowing a 6.1.19 is also being worked on.

It's worth noting that for Boot Camp to work there must be Windows drivers for every hardware component in a Mac. This is easy on an Intel Mac because they largely use off-the-shelf components with generic drivers available. Windows on ARM is designed around Qualcomm SoCs which means Apple would have to write a huge number of drivers from scratch, including the GPU driver. Apple has already said that only a small number of people even use Boot Camp, and that they view virtualization as the preferred solution, so they're likely not going to spend the effort to write Windows drivers from scratch for Apple Silicon hardware for a tiny portion of the market.

this just makes me sad

Can anyone attest to whether emulation options for M1 are as solid as Bootcamp has been under Intel?
Can a user do deep-level CLI processes? Can you expect acceptable graphics performance under emulation on M1?

Funny how in the past I would run to download an update like this. Today, where I have a single boot camp instance in use for a certain purpose, it works...so there is no way I'm touching it with an update.
I run an eGPU in bootcamp, touching any update would destroy the compatibility. As it is I need to do a little display cable swap around ritual on boot to get it to work. Then do a different ritual when returning to macOS. Even Apple’s bootcamp update prompts in windows disable my keyboard until I kill the prompt 😂🤦 I have so much confidence in this update…
