I called it! The AirProPods that have a huge discount now are going to be obsolete and thrown in landfills in a few weeks.
I have already thrown all of my AirPods in the trash. I’m not even going to wait for Apple to disable them remotely when the new ones are launched. They still worked great but we now it’s a matter of time.

I’m just ready to get my credit card out and get the new ones.

Good call. You nailed it.

Let's not make wearable cameras in society a common thing, please. It doesn't matter how secure Apple's is, because the normalization of it will just allow non-secure devices to go unnoticed.

Exactly right and it won’t be long before there are knockoffs that look just like AirPods and are doing recording of everything.

This is bad… All bad

We need to push back on this stuff

None of it is inevitable

Apple presents the new Creep-Pods, with all your stalking footage safely stored in the private cloud. Siri is going to love them. And how about a little facial recognition to make your everyday life easier? Luckily, we’ve been building technology into our smartphones for years that constantly scans our users’ faces. It would be a shame if that data continued to sit unused on the devices.

(I’m really surprised that Apple is taking this risk to its image with AirPods and isn’t moving this feature to a new product category.)

Everyone should have access to nuclear technology because it can be used for good.

As with all things, the potential for good has to be weighed against the risks.

There’s a scale issue there I think. We could go the other way and go back to burning books because knowledge is bad.

All the same - I do agree - it needs to be weighed up. Nobody is getting blown up from these AirPods. You do have a to draw a line somewhere and I think we’re a million miles away here. It’s not live video, it’s not high quality, and it has an indicator light. I don’t see how anyone is looking at this and saying “this is it - it’s the final piece of my stalking toolkit”.

But yes, there is a line. I don’t think we’re anywhere close to it.

I think this may be huge, HUGE. Much more comfortable than glasses, more stealth.

An always-on camera (or on command) that uses AI. Like glasses, but instead of visuals you have audio descriptions, which will have to do, for now.

Of course this is the upside 😀

See someone you like? Check their social credit score!

Chuckle. Does the Photos Appl today tell you who random people whose picture you take from a single picture?
Nope.

Or does it learn faces of family members you often take pictures of ( and folks have slapped on their Apple ID avatars?)

Ya, trust Apple will implement incredibly carefully, at least 1st gen.

1:1 clones will save images/videos as regular data files. Pls don’t yank my AirPods out of my ears because no one can tell 🙁

I think that this is a really crazy time. I have difficulty commenting, as there are intense privacy concerns, and I don't want to offend anyone.

AI Camera. AI is bad enough, give it peeping Tom status, and you've got a problem: Paparazzi land

I have no interest in wearing a camera. I’m already pretty good at recognizing what I’m looking at. Apparently there are some who don’t get out enough and need some help.

What I would like though are AirPods with a sensors where these cameras are that can detect the beams coming from these AirPods and other earbuds don’t to come with cameras. As long as I can detect when they’re running I’m good.
