I highly doubt it’s a camera. I would think it’s something like Lidar - a new tech that can use light to “read” but not to take photos etc and consumes less power.

Apple is working on camera-equipped AirPods that appear to be nearly ready to launch, based on a video MacRumors found in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate.

The camera on the AirPods will feed information to Visual Intelligence, and Siri will be able to answer questions about the wearer's surroundings and log information. There is a direct reference to setting up Visual Intelligence on the AirPods.

If hair is covering the AirPods up, you'll receive an alert. "To get the most accurate information about things in your environment, make sure AirPods are not covered," it says.

The camera-equipped AirPods have the codename B790, which was also previously mentioned by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Gurman suggested the AirPods could launch as soon as September, so we could see them at the iPhone-centric event where Apple will unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and foldable iPhone Ultra.

Funny how everyone trusts Apple with their savings, browser history and medical info but not when it comes to a simple closed loop camera system. Seems like you’re already blaming Apple for Meta and Google’s mistakes.

It's refreshing (and very rare) seeing a well-reasoned response. Seems many automatically go for the worst possible sky-is-falling use cases.

There's a ton of potential in how this tech can be used without going for the creepy possibilities (that Apple wouldn't use in any case).

But the majority of the uses will be the creepy side, it’s literally why Meta had to make changes to the glasses so the camera won’t work if the recording LED is covered or damaged.

If you can't take a picture without saying "Hey Siri" then really don't need a LED light. It is airpods with bluetooth. Streaming video would kill battery and be low quality . the Glasses are also much bigger ( and much bugger battery).
Nobody is going to want this to record very much all the time.

Meta glasses a creepy because don't have to say or overly do anything noticble for them to record. Skip that 'creepy' initialization and done.

Another product that is interesting but misses the mark for a lot of women (just like vision pro did regarding messing up haristyles and makeup but that is kind of unavoidable with that type of product). I mean I do wear my hair back somtimes but not that often when I go out.

The glasses will be the first product in this AR category that works for me most of the time I suspect.

I'm not cutting my hair for this and if I have to move things around to have the cameras see things i might as well just grab my iphone. One of the reasons I LIKE having longer hair despite it being fashionable is that I can cover up earbuds and still talk to people via transparency mode and they have no idea I have them in.


I still think everyone who believes this will take photos or videos is incredibly wrong, I would bet a lot of money that the captured data stream will be ephemeral and encrypted. Apple is not making gopro for your ears, and never will.

I have a drop-dead serious question about privacy as well as implications for potential criminal liability of what is typically considered among the worst of possible offenses. For obvious reasons, I will not expand upon the question, despite there being no end of related scenarios and associated hypothetical consequences. The variations on the theme are endless and mostly obvious.

What happens with the information fed to Visual Intelligence when a parent is wearing these camera-equipped AirPods while changing a baby’s diaper?

We may not like the idea of it, but it's becoming an inevitable part of our world.

Remember that it will enable even life-changing things like giving vision to the blind.

Rather than banning a technology that's nearly impossible to do so, we need to figure out how to regulate it in order to protect people the most.

Keeping in mind that in public any assumptions of privacy are nearly moot and have been for a long time. There are hundreds of cameras around you in people's pockets ready to use at any given moment (and many being used) plus surveillance cameras, car cameras and more.

a photo is one thing but let's see if there's any facial geometry processing implemented because there are laws covering biometric data.

No matter what "camera" is used for this tech its gonna be a hassle - people will simply assume that you are recording them (no matter if it does this or not because they heard someone tell them that Apple now has AirPods with cameras) and instead of me listening to music/podcasts I have to tell people "NO I AM NOT RECORDING YOU, I AM JUST LISTENING TO MY PLAYLIST" while I workout at the gym 😞

That’s exactly what will happen. In the UK various organisations have banned Meta glasses and as the backlash against such products grows the number of bans will only increase. If AirPods with cameras are released I guess those same organisations will include them in their ban and you just know that there will be confusion and non-camera equipped pods will probably be mistakenly included by overzealous officials.

Why is there assumption this has anythign to do with Airpods?

1) the POV is blurred camera that unblurs when asked.
2) the POV reads the title from that view point
3) The aipods are airpods.

There's no way Apple is going to allow apps to take a photo or video using these. It'll be purely for text/object recognition and so on.

But: there will immediately be cheap Chinese knockoffs that look exactly like these AirPods but are specifically designed for surreptitiously recording people, and how will anyone know the difference?

Based on that statement in the article it may not be recording a photo. It could be saving the description of the view such as "There was store xyz at address xxxxx" or a sign that read "xxxxxx" or the name of some plant you looked at.

Well explained. However, even if it doesn’t store a video, these AirPods will still pose a major security and privacy risk.
