Apple's Cheapest iPhone Now Starts at $599

In the UK it's priced at £599, which is roughly $750, not $600.

I was intending to buy one at release, but not when I'm paying an extra $150 for it.
You're not paying an extra $150 for it. UK prices will include 20% VAT. Adding 20% to $600 you get $720. Different, but not MUCH different from that $750 number of yours... plus you get longer warranties required by law that could account for $30 difference.

The only interesting thing is that it confirms Apple Intelligence is coming in April to iPhone in Germany. Probably still won't use it though

This is a $499 iPhone. Apple just clicked on the 128GB storage option for everyone.

Where are you seeing that? in US base is 128 @ 599

This is an incredibly lame release, wow! The price is not cheap, visually it looks boring, and no MagSafe?
No one outside of corporation bulk purchases, should be buying this

I'm not saying what people can and cannot do with their own hard earned cash, but this is a scam of a release IMO.

They've completely destroyed the SE legacy. It's now just iPhone 16 Edition because nothing Special about it.

Apple pulled the same strategy as iPhone 16 Pro Max with 256GB.

I guess the most interesting thing will be if its actually using an Apple modem or Qualcomm again.
If the former, will be an interesting peak into their future roadmap. But even then... yawn.

Cheapest, wow... $899 in Canada, while the direct conversion at 70c is ~850. And tariffs shouldnt be affecting Canadian prices, we arent imposing import tariffs.

I was hoping it was in the $700-750 range at most.

Canada is paying for the SIM tray.

$170 increase! Without the Qualcomm modem! May have to rethink my plan on dumping my iPhone Xr.

Totally disagree -- if concerned about size/weight, these are big jumps

It may be a concern for you, but it's not a concern for me. As I said, I currently have both the iPhone SE 3 and iPhone 14 and looking at them side-by-side and holding them in my hands, I don't mind the slightly larger dimensions of the iPhone 14 as it's not that noticable to me.

Have you actually compared the differences in person and not based off numbers on Apple's website?

Doesn’t the UK include tax in that price? It’s 719 in the Netherlands but that’s including 21% tax.

It's definitely not a budget phone and seems very targeted at markets like the US, where people are probably more inclined to stay with an iPhone to not lose eg iMessage.

I'm not sure how this will play in markets where Apple is behind Android in terms of market share. For the record I don't think there's anything wrong with this phone, it's a cheaper entry than iPhone 15 and 16 while still providing a lot more than the SE.

But I'm not sure why I would recommend this to anyone looking for a cheap phone over a Pixel 8 on sale or an 8a, for example. The price difference in the budget class just opened up quite a bit.

Calling it now. This iPhone 16e will go the same way as the iPhone 5c.
I honestly think the iPhone 16e will hang on for a long while, with future price reductions.

That said, The 1st generation iPhone SE started at $399 for 32GB in 2016. In 2025 after inflation, that's apparently $528, so the new iPhone 16e is slightly more expensive than the starting price for the original iPhone SE (which was praised for its price), for what is definitely a way more technologically advanced iPhone, especially when the SE never had a base model higher than 64GB before, so I'd say... Not bad.

Very disappointed I will hold on to my 12 a bit longer. It does everything I need I am just a simple dude.
Same over here, current iPhone prices are simply not worth it. Hardly anything noteworthy has changed since the iPhone 12.

I was planning on upgrading to the SE as I hardly use the second camera… but this is just a disappointing product.

Just going to get my battery replaced and check back with Apple in a few years.

I was looking at the tech specs page -- so no MagSafe, no Wi-Fi 6E (while the other iPhone 16 models all have Wi-Fi 7), no mmWave 5G, and no Ultra Wideband chip. Makes this kind of expensive for $599. You might as well spring for the iPhone 16.
