HiRez - it is not a question of "Flashy". Supply chain performance is not what makes Apple - it is not the competitive differentiator - otherwise it would be competing in the Dell space (heaven forbid).

Apple products sell at a big premium due to features, functionality, ecosystem, cult marketing, etc.

Tim's contribution most likely shows up in the margin area - that is important. However, his performance in that area is enabled by the volume clout Apple represents to suppliers. That volume is driven by the innovative products...

Steve is really one of a kind.

It's outpacing Apple's iOS growth because Apple already has a large chunk of market share and Google was starting from zero. Don't get me wrong, Android is doing well, but to read into the numbers that they will shut down Apple is a mistake, I think you underestimate them. Apple hits home runs because they have lots of smart, design-minded people there who can execute, and they are always two steps ahead of everyone else, there's no reason to think that can't continue unless things change drastically.

the smartphone market is headed to having lower margins. that is where apple's problems will be.

The company cultures are rather different. I doubt if anyone really happy working at Apple would be happy at HP, and vice versa. This would be more pronounced at the senior management level where you are in constant constant with the CEO.

I would expect a short-lived former Apple exec like Mark Papermaster to turn up at HP, not a veteran like Cook. Heck, Cook ran the company while Steve was getting surgery. Cook likes it at Apple.

I think HP's looking for a new CEO still, right? Although not sure I would want to go there, what with the way that board's been working out. I think if Cook *did* go, there'd be major culture shock on both sides. I don't think it would work out too well.

If Cook had CEO aspirations outside Apple, he'd already be there.

New Orbit For Cook

The balance of power in tech could easily pull Cook into a new orbit. These guys are as big as planets on a galactic stage.

No. Analysts know squat about R&D and talent. They see Cook as the heir apparent, so they somehow attribute a CFO as being the Vision when he's not.

Oh so true. I saw some talking head idiot analyst on CNBC yesterday talking about how Apple's new hand held TV device was going to be a winner.

One could stretch the definition to see this as a hand held device but that would be a stretch.

Now that the government has smashed the anti-poaching agreement, he might.

Has anyone stopped to consider that Cook is unable to reach his full potential at Apple, cool as their products are? He may not have the hypnotic personality of Steve Jobs, few CEOs do, but he's proved he can run the company.

And without Cook, Jobs would be bankrupting the company on some 'very important' hobby, like he did last time.

It's not about the money anymore for guys like Cook, but if he wants to reach his full potential, he might look HP's way, at least temporarily — now they own WebOS (cough, cough). Or he could suffer another pay-rise on the rumour, and keep working for the best tech company in history. How long before Cook becomes CEO and Jobs is Apple-spokesperson, or some new job nobody's thought of before… Apple's good at that. (iCEO has been done, no matter how appropriate.)

The Other Steve, W that is.

I doubt Wozniak would be willing to be CEO of apple. He honestly doesn't seem like the type. He's a great guy sure, but you have to realize, Steve jobs' success is in part due to his business skills, which I don't think woz ever had.

Wow, if AAPL drops $20 just on rumors that Cook is leaving, how much would it drop if Jobs were to step down? $100?

You never know, it might rise or the fall wouldn't be substantial at all. Jobs makes mistakes too and perhaps some analysts (who often only guess, anyway) can see a brighter future for Apple Inc without the tyranny of Jobs.

On the side note, I think Apple's current share price is far too high to get seriously involved.

Woz isn't qualified to be CEO of the corner candy store let alone a major corporation.
