I, too, am very excited about the prospect of micro-LED displays. They should have many benefits over OLED such as higher brightness which will lead to better contrast ratios, either less susceptible or not susceptible at all to burn in and will take even less power to operate than OLED.

I think that it makes perfect sense to start with a small display for the Apple Watch and then work to scale the technology up for larger display sizes. This strategy should also help with keeping costs in line.

I just read an article yesterday about quantum dots becoming another display option in the next few years. Currently, they are being used to enhance LCD and OLED displays, but they have now developed—at this point just small ones—displays that are driven directly with the photoluminescent quantum dots which will provide again, brighter displays that are much, much simpler to manufacture so they should also reduce display costs significantly.

It will be very interesting to see which technology will take over the display market or if they will peacefully coexist.

Actually I think the only reason Apple is doing this, ( if this rumor is true) is to lower their product cost and in the same time raise their profit.

I'm no expert om screens, but I can't imagine Micro-led is better than Oled?

I know there has been some cases on burn-in on Oled display, but I'm guessing that's a few?

Correct me if I'm wrong😊

Thanks for reading🙂

LMFAO! Trickle down from Apple, of all price gouging companies. Come on man....

Of course Apple designs trickle down. The 2008 Air design eventually informed all MacBooks. The 2018 iPad Pro design all iPads. The iPhone SE followed the 5S design, then the 8 design, probably soon the XR design.

Eventually, the Watch SE will be like an earlier Watch or Watch Ultra.

That's nothing. I'm going to preorder the preorder! :p

This aint a fanboy showdown, but I did just pre-order my place for an invitation to make a pre-order reservation for a place in the pre-order queue for an actual pre-order that will eventually become an actual transact-able purchase in 2025.

I hope that the apple watch ultra design will trickle down to the standard models. Crossing fingers.

Hard pass, to get the ruggedness of the ultra you need a thicker case with chunkier buttons. It’s made for an entirely different market than the Series 8.

There is one thing I don't get ... while MacBooks and iPads are transitioning from miniLED to OLED, the watch is transitioning from OLED to microLED? Why?

I would imagine due to the difficulty of scaling up display size. microLED is pretty cutting edge.

In the meantime OLED gets you similar contrast ratios. It’s going to be a stepping stone tech like miniLED.

Why the watch though..? It seems like one of the least important devices to switch over.

Small screens and lower volume product

Everything is transitioning to micro. It’s just a question of timelines; it could take 5 years or 15 years.

If MacBooks and iPads go OLED first (I’m skeptical), it’ll be only as a transitional technology before micro becomes feasible.

If they can use micro-LED to Apple Watch, then it's also possible to implant to iPhone, iPad, Mac, and more! Because making micro-LED smaller is extremely difficult and hard to mass produce which makes it impossible to make panels for iPhone and Apple Watch.

Spring of 2025? Apple Watch’s don’t come out in the spring. They are part of the iPhone release cycle. Sure that can change, but I don’t always believe what these people predict.
