I speak for myself on this, but if your product has ads, it's pretty much useless and dead for me.

Intrusive ad is annoying. Banner ad is not really.

I rather have ad than paying monthly. I will never pay. If legal free streaming deads out, I will torrenting

Why would they? They are getting more from other streaming providers. If Spotify shuttered tomorrow, all their subscribers would gravitate to the other providers.
Not all. A good number of them will just either buy or get what they want elsewhere.

Spotify should spend less money on executives to be profitable. Instead, they raise salaries and want labels/artists to receive less?

What a mess.
Perhaps if they don't pay them more those execs will leave?

Apple please don’t kill Spotify.

Spotify seems to be killing themselves already.

Did you know they recently asked for another BILLION DOLLARS from investors?

And they still have no way to become profitable?

Sure... Apple is able to make things happen that most companies cannot thanks to their large warchest of cash.

But Spotify was in trouble before Apple got into the music streaming business. Spotify needs to fix that first.

Spotify has 30 million paying customers... but they also have 70 million free customers that are costing them money. And their ads simply don't cover it. Again... they need to fix that.

Apple Music first impression already gives me bad image of it. Tons of reports saying local library messed up with iCloud music library. And more.

Oh, apple does not care much about eastern market, let alone Chinese, Japanese market...uh, what should I say? They just simply don't care that much. Most music are from western world.

Plus, Apple seems forcing everyone to see Apple Music stuff even if they don't subscribe regardless, providing all betas of iOS 10 does not actually allow user to turn off Apple Music for good. They will silently re-enable it after a few days or even a few hours.

iOS 10 music app also sucks. Completely not designed for local music library listening.

If free tier Spotify goes away, then good bye music streaming. I will only watch YouTube videos and that's it. Apple music library is still, uh, i should say, not big enough.

Being warned by moderators, my self-censorship is now strong...

It would be the best interest to them to have many companies streaming and paying for music (some not as much as others) rather than just have Apple, Amazon, and Google paying for streaming music. Spotify should still get a good deal.

Spotify is most likely doomed because they only have their streaming music service to rely on for cash flow along with their investors. Apple can lose money on Apple Music forever and be more generous with payouts, but still make a lot of money because of how profitable their other lines of business are. Similar to Walmart Supercenters - bring people in with cheap, low margin groceries, and then get them to shop the rest of the store which has a lot higher markup. Then you eliminate your competition and raise prices.

Spotify cannot do an IPO because they cannot make a profit and people do not usually want to invest in a company that will not make money. Eventually their investors will probably cut their losses and stop funding them. I don't think Spotify currently has a direct path to profitability. Especially with an upstart like Apple Music already having half the subscription base they do.

Many people who have never subscribed to Spotify are probably perfectly happy with the free tier. Spotify needs to either eliminate the free tier (like Hulu just did), or make subscribing more enticing to the free users - like exclusive releases, or delaying new releases for the free tier for a few months or weeks (like what has been happening with digital versus Blu-Ray release dates). Apple's method is much more direct. Free for three months, and then pay up or leave.

Spotify would probably do best at this point to put itself up for sale. Investors can recoup what they have put into the company, so they will be happy. Samsung or one of the Chinese cell phone companies would probably be the best suitor.

I hope Spotify stays in buisness. It works very well for me. I have not even used the free apple music trial because spotify "just works".

well and their pricing model is even affordable as they bill us in the third world a reasonable amount in our crappy money instead of demanding US$15 per month or something (which amounts to like 3.5x what spotify costs here)

or delaying new releases for the free tier for a few months or weeks (like what has been happening with digital versus Blu-Ray release dates).

well that would not work for people like me, they can delay 'new releases' for 10 years for all I care :D

"it simply doesn't have the spending power of Apple, Google, or Amazon" that's capitalism, suck it up.

The reason i stopped using Spotify it's because Android users was also using it..so was no longer cool! I don't understand why Apple has released :apple: Music for Android? Droid users are having problems financially - money problems xD
stop breathing air. lowly android users are doing it. you must elevate yourself.

Spotify is missing the point here, just pay whatever apple is paying but listen to your customers, make it a better product than apple, and you will get more users.

Currently i'm with Spotify, but i'm desperate to find a decent music platform that will give me a Block/ Ban artist button, so i will never have to listen to Justin briber, kanye west, Drake and friends ever again on a public play list.

This is not asking much for a paid membership, you should be entitled of choosing what you don't want to listen when you are paying for it.

If apple brings this, i'll happily move away from Spotify, There are quite a lot of people also asking for such feature from Spotify but they don't seem to listen to their users.
